Story

This story takes place in a land vaguely reminiscent of modern-day Japan. In the twenty years since the first Human Tank was developed, the war raging between the Empire of Japon and the Kingdom of Japon has turned into a proxy war fought between Human Tanks on both sides.

The Empire of Japon once ruled the entire land of Japon. Now diminished and cornered, the Empire prepares to make its last stand as the tanks of the Kingdom of Japon draw close to its capital. Shoutaro Daihon’ei, Lieutenant of the Imperial Army, moves out to the battlefield, followed closely by the loyal Human Tanks in his company.

4th place "Top 10 Indie Strategy Games of 2012" IndieGames

88/100, Pelit recommends: "A fast-paced and original strategy game that modernizes the classic game of Battleship." Pelit magazine

4.5/5 "War of the Human Tanks is a truly excellent title. Despite some overly lengthy dialogue, the storytelling is engaging and humorous and it's matched with action which is a heck of a blast." A Role Model - Paul Harrison

8.5/10 "War of the Human Tanks is a welcome addition to the tactical gamer’s catalog. I think I’ll be spending quite a bit of time with this one." John Ahlberg - So Last Gen

3.5/5 "It's absolutely a worthy title in its own right. The character banter is thoroughly entertaining, augmented by solid combat." Clark A. - Digitally Downloaded

"Different in a strangely appealing way; and as a wargame, it is nicely designed and quite tense."
Costik - Play This Thing

“If you’re a military buff with a thing for anime then you’ll definitely be interested in War of the Human Tanks.”
Matthew Kim - Twinfinite

"If you are into Fire Emblem or Advance Wars, this will be a game you can buy without regrets." Matt Broitman - Halfbeard's HUD

"It’s a weird mix of candy coated hyperactive “moe” madness and soulful ruminations on the socially problematic nature of tanks with minds of their own, and I can’t decide if it’s slightly brilliant or just the dumbest thing that’s ever happened. For whatever it’s worth, though, the translation seems competent." Nathan Grayson - Rock, Paper, Shotgun

"Gaming thrives on its diversity (in both subject matter and mechanics), so if this title can fill an 'anime styled strategy game with musings on the expendable nature of soldiers and a neat line in twisted dialogue' shaped void then it’s bound to make someone sit up and take notice." Peter Parrish - incgamers.com

"While the action of the game is fast-paced and filled with blazing aggression, the battles are also very short and punctuated. They are an absolute joy, with fluid animations, barreling music that sets a strong tone, and really solid strategy mechanics." AJ Dellinger - Gamezebo

"I’m going to keep playing this game because I want to.  And if that doesn’t express my feelings in the simplest of terms I don’t know what will." Alex Kende - GameTrender

"WAR OF THE HUMAN TANKS Is A Very Good Name" Alec Meer - Rock, Paper, Shotgun

XZero - Dangeru

Ever - Playitlive.fr

"War of the Human Tanks est un jeu qui s'annonce impératif pour tous les fans de stratégie, d'Advance Wars et autre Fire Emblem." Ripper - Game Side Story

Doujin-Style Low-Budget Game Exceeds Expectations

By hvylobster posted 5th March

I expected nothing from War of the Human Tanks except some fun scenarios and a bunch of people talking about Human Tanks with semi-serious faces. Turns out my expectations were far too reserved!

The biggest surprise was actually the OST; if you're considering getting the game alone instead of bundled with the soundtrack, don't even bother and just buy the deluxe version instead. The sound effects in-game work for what they represent, though the graphics lean towards the "simple" side of things. This was probably partially an aesthetic choice, and partially a decision not to implement complex animations into the game.

The gameplay is likewise simple; you can play it like it's Advance Wars or Fire Emblem, but when you start getting into things and optimizing strategies, you realize it's a bit closer to Battleship, relying on direct combat units only for defense. Sadly all attacks seem to be One-Hit-KOs as far as I've gotten, but there is enough depth as-is that I wouldn't mind if that never changed.

There's a long involved story that takes itself about as seriously as an Anime about chibi-looking Human Tanks would, and it's full of words. Many many many many words. Luckily there is an option to automatically skip all story sequences and get to the gameplay if you're not in the mood for a light visual-novel about a relaxed Anime-Lover commanding an army of human tanks.

The game plays out very well. It's sort of Real-time, but since units take time to become active after using them, it retain the Turn-Based feel of similar classic games. Prior to combat you "buy" your forces and choose which ones to deploy; you can deploy any number of any unit type up to your given limit, so long as you can afford to replace any losses. It's a good system where you sort of need to hunt for the enemy's Commander Tank with scout units, defend your own Commander with with basic troops, and barrage enemy units with long-range Human Tanks.

All in all, a fun to play game with an equally fun OST. Buy it, in my opinion.
