Silverfall: Complete Collection review
Silverfall is a standard Hack-Slash RPG with very nice looking Cell-shaded graphics. The game does suffer from some bugs but most can be easily fixed with either installing both at the same time or using fan-made micro-patches (Google is your friend.) IMHO this is the only way to play silverfall as you will get the most content as well as fix most of the UI issues. All and all, a great game even though it does have some bugs.
Silverfall: Complete Collection review
Silverfall is kind of those generic A-RPG you can find out there. It doesn't give anything particularly innovative, but at the same time it does most of the thing right. It is actually quite a enjoyable game as long as you like A-RPG such as Diablo, and its graphic style is quite special comparing to other A-RPG. The game is a bit glitchy, but the expansion pack fix a lot of problem.
Silverfall: Complete Collection review
Silverfall is an enjoyable action-RPG with a great deal of charm, but a number of issues as well. Its cel-shaded graphics still hold up quite well years after the game's release, due in large part to great art design. Good-quality voice acting is another big plus. Also, right from the start, the quests are interesting and original, introducing the player to the game's Nature vs Technology theme.
Silverfall does, however, have its problems. For starters, you really *must* have both Silverfall & Earth Awakening installed before playing the original. EA fixes a ton of issues with the original Silverfall. EA also improves the original's UI, control scheme and graphics options. Silverfall Complete Collection is absolutely the way to go if you plan on getting any enjoyment out of the original Silverfall campaign.
Also - and I cannot stress this enough - SAVE OFTEN! Silverfall, enjoyable though it may be, has stability issues running under Win7-64 and tends to crash occasionally, especially when zoning. The longest session I personally have had without a CTD has been about two hours. The shortest, about 45 minutes. I haven't tested Silverfall in an earlier version of Windows, so WinXP may not have the same problem. As always, Your Mileage May Vary. Note that (similar to TES4: Oblivion) the ability to use Fast Travel on the game map keeps those crashes from being a major obstacle in completing the game. A bit annoying, yes, but not game-breaking.
Despite some minor blemishes, Silverfall/EA is, in my opinion, definitely worth playing. If you have zero patience with the occasional bug or CTD then you may want to take a pass on this one. Otherwise, a fan of action-RPG's will probably find this game fairly enjoyable. I would like to give this game 4 stars, but what truly drags the rating down is the multiplayer component. Although LAN play is still available, Internet play no longer functions at all because Silverfall's servers have long since been shut down by Monte Cristo. Based on that, I can't give more than 3 stars due to such an important feature being crippled. A good game...I just wish it was still playable online.
Silverfall: Complete Collection review
Make sure to get Silverfall along with Earth Awakening Expansion because the game is much better with the expansion. It adds WASD controls and a customizable user interface. Also I noticed that the graphics looked better and the framerate was a bit smoother after installing the expansion. You can start a level 1 character right from the beggining in Earth Awakening as long as you have the original game. So once you get them both installed just use Silverfall EA to play both games. The graphics are very well done in my opinion. They have a cartoon/cell shaded style similar to the MMORPG champions online but set in a fantasy setting. You can turn of the black outline if you prefer a more "realistic" look. Overall I like the graphics and artstlye and it runs well even on my old pentium 4 computer.
The game play is alot like most games of this genre where you get a quest, click on the enemies to attack, gather the loot, level up, get more quests, rinse and repeat. The WASD controls work fine but because of the level design sometimes you get stuck on objects or hit an invisible wall when in a fight and that can be aggravating also getting use to using the hotkeys, camera and controls all together takes some time but compared to the original games is much improved and after an hour or so you will have it down.
The game feels like a singleplayer MMO with lots of quests and alot of loot to find. I believe it has multiplayer but I haven't tried it and probably won't so I cant comment on that part of the game. You are free to level up anyway you like in Silverfall. If you want to be an Elvan ranger that has healing magics go for it. If you prefer a Dwarven melee fighter that had dark magic abilities than you can do that too. There is a skill tree that you use to unlock new powers and skills and that will mold your character as you go through the game. I haven't finished the game yet but so far I like it and don't regret buying it. I saw a lot of negative reviews of this game but they must have just played the original with the old UI and controls. I would rate the original game about a 6 because it was pretty bad to control but with the improvements made in the expansion I give it an 8.
If you are the type of person who can overlook some minor imperfections in your games then I recommend Silverfall. If you are expecting this to be the best game ever then maybe look somewhere else. Silverfall has plenty of quest to complete, a huge world to explore with a good variety of environments and monsters all with nice looking graphics to enjoy. Also with the variety of skills and character choice it has some decent replay value.
