Eschalon: Book 1
Bundle

Rating: 4.3 (57 votes cast)

Eschalon: Book I is an old-school role-playing game that will take you across massive outdoor environments and deep into dozens of sprawling dungeons as you seek to uncover the mystery of who you are. It features a tile-built, turn-based game world where the result of absolutely every action is rolled, calculated or statistically determined. Hundreds of items and dozens of creatures await your discovery in this classically inspired RPG.

  • A tile-built, turn-based game world where the result of absolutely every action is rolled, calculated or statistically determined. Strategy is paramount to success; careful skill management, equipment selection and magic usage will win your fights, not rapid button clicking. We are very pleased to say this is not another "action RPG".
  • Hundreds of items and dozens of creatures await your discovery. A combination of randomly generated treasure and carefully hidden goodies means that no two games will play the exact same way.
  • Unlimited character development style: Choose from 24 unique skills to make the character you want and 8 base attributes that affect your character's every action throughout the game. The game world does not scale or adjust itself to match anyone's play style, so the ease or difficulty of the game is directly related to how successful you are at developing your character.
  • Combat plays out at your pace. Eschalon: Book I features a turn-based system that allows you to roll through combat as fast or slow you want...make it fast and furious, or analyze every option for maximum advantage.
  • A non-linear storyline means that the game world is open to explore as you desire. Follow the storyline or don't...it's up to you. Just be careful where you go and who you choose to trust- the world of Eschalon can be a deadly place for an inexperienced adventurer.
  • An epic adventure that you must face alone...a single-player RPG carefully designed to feel like the great old school RPGs of the past such as Ultima®, Might & Magic®, and Wizardry®

This game is a classic rpg game like the baldur's gate series. Very easily playable with

just a mouse most of the time. The turn based style is so fast it hardly seems turn based.

This is well worth the 15 bucks if you liked the classic rpgs of the 90s.

Echalon: Book 1 has turned out to be one of the best new games I’ve found in a while. Right now I’m about 20 hours into the game with a ranger, and I’m as happy with it as I was when I started. Initially nostalgia powered my interest in the game, but after playing around with a few class and skill combos, I found that the game was fun, engrossing, and has holding value above and beyond a simple fan-boy rehash of my early teen years. I think this game was worth buying, and I expect most RPG fans will as well.

The graphics are nice for what they are- a slightly off top down isometric view with stylistically drawn looking tiles. The character’s icon updates with items changes- although you can’t often really make out what is supposed to be what, but it’s a nice touch… playing it, I feel like it reminds me most of Fallout 1 or Ultima 6, with dashes of BG 1 tossed in graphically, while the border interface graphics remind me of Everquest 1. Most of the music is really AAA quality stuff, the sound effects build ambiance well, and have while they sometimes sound homespun (such as the sound when the slimes attack you) they still feel well thought out and work well.

The game play is classic RPG style- dice rolls and hit points and pitching a tent to rest up. There’s a fast travel from town to town system, which is nice, but doesn’t take away from that old school feeling. You have to carry munitions for your bow, your mana does not come back quickly, and there are things that can kill you quick if you go to the wrong places. You should save soon, and save often, at least at first. Once you get past the learning curve though, if you are anything of a gamer you should be able to have a pretty good feel of how you will do in most situations that are not totally novel or new within the game.

The skill and stat system is largely fun too. You can move your game a lot of ways with different picks here… the only real gripe I had was that leveling the mapping skill should scale up a lot quicker… you could spend a lot of levels or gold on very little in return. The overall freedom this system gives is pretty nice though, and the game play differences the skills allow seem like they would lend to replay ability if your that sort.

All in all, 5 stars. I would buy this game again if I did not own it. I am looking forward to the completion of it so I can hop into book 2 soon!

This game has everything you'd want from a crpg. The isometric view is new enough that current gen gamers can enjoy the game, while maintaining a 2d aspect so that purists and old schoolers can also enjoy the game.

Part of the game is knowing what you are and aren't capable of. Each class has its own feel to it, while there are certain similarities such as the character building, which remain consistent among each of the classes.

I heartily endorse this game for anyone who grew up in the 80's and reminisces about the days gone by. For the newer crowd, if you are a graphics junkie this game may not be enough to satiate your needs.

Excellent sound effects, I didn't notice the score enough to pay attention to it as I usually have internet radio playing while I game, but the sound effects in the dungeons sounds pretty cool.

A totally lovely game for our older players. In a primitive engine, a brilliant game with much love for the detail was made. Younger players for which RPG game means something like Diablo will probably not have fun with this, but for people who have started with games like Dungeon Master and all the old low-budget RPGs, this is a game to go.

Well, they said, on the website, "classic old school RPG, like ultima". In my memorie (but maybe my memorie is wrong) ultima 7 part 1 and 2 were much better. Better graphic and music, and those game were made 15 years ago.

Nonethless, i did enjoyed the game a little bit anyway but it is not worth 20$. You should wait a price cut (i got it 10$)

Great game for any classic old school RPG lovers. Played the demo a few days ago which was rather expansive in iteself (would advise playing the demo first). Graphics are not overly fantastic, but hey, what good are pretty pictures with no storyline for any true RPGer. Newer or younger entrants into the RPG genre would probably not find these game overly that entertaining. Any old school RPG fans from ther days of Gold box series ie. Champions of krynn will like this game. A bit expensive for $20, but hey, there aint many old school games out there any more.
