UFO: Enemy Unknown 2

By Fred_DM posted 11th April

X-Com Apocalypse was as much a remake of the original UFO: Enemy Unknown as it was a proper sequel (unlike Terror from the Deep). The graphics and setting were changed, but gameplay has pretty much remained the same. All its predecessors' strong points are still present: tactical turn-based combat, base and roster management, research, etc. Along with the first 2 games in the series, this is the X-Com game you should play.

X-Com Apocalypse Recommendation

While it's a lot harder to get into than the previous two X-Com games due to the massively restructured interface, Apocalypse shakes things up rather well for the series. It retains the complex strategy requirements of the previous two games whilst presenting another interesting setting, throwing in gameplay changes (including the ability to switch to real-time combat), and updating the visuals. All-in-all, I'd say fans of the previous two games should definitely grab this one, but everyone should bear in mind its interface needs patience and time to adjust to.

I know some people didn't like the changes made for this game, but I enjoy it. I like the turn-based/real-time options during combat. Doesn't always run smoothly on Windows 7, but the DosBox setup that was installed with the game helps. It slows down somewhat when you're severely destroying an environment and there are several characters taking actions onscreen at the same time. But overall, a fun game with a great deal of depth and replayability.

While this isn't the best of the x-com games it isn't the worst. It's much like the original meets simcity, meets an RTS. You are still squad base, you can still build a base but now we (you) are set in a town, which looks a lot like a simcity town. Also missions can be turned based or in real time (like a poor RTS.) This is a nice addition to the x-com pack but only so-so as a stand alone. All and all, a so-so game. Nice game play but still not the best.

Great addition to the X-com games. If you liked UFO Defense and Terror from the Deep, you'll love this one too. Adds some things that you'll probably like and dislike at the same time. A lot of die hards of the first two were unhappy with this when it came out sure, but that was mainly because a lot just wanted an expansion of the first one more or less from what I can tell. It's worth getting if you like UFO Defense.

An old school game that carries on the UFO X-Com series, after Terror from the Deep a new threat appears and once more X-Com is sent back in to face a new emeny, but this time with new weapons and equipement. Some Fractions are will to help X-Com while others are willing to help the Aliens forfil their goal. Will humanity serive this time or will the Alien take over earth finally.

Plenty of hours of game play and never play the same game twice with changes each time you start the game.

This game was unpopular with a lot of fans of the first two games, however, I always felt it was a worthy new entry with a lot of improvements. The strategy works very well with the Realtime/turnbased mix, where you move in realtime until you actually spot an alien and then act in turnbased mode. And the game was just generally polished to a beautiful shine in every respect of administration and research. It is a good deal different than the original two games though.

this game is a excelent adition to the series with inovations and development across the board. The highlight for me was the development of the organisations within the city and there interactions and how you can pick sides and influence there ecenomic standing. The research tree is also a vast improvment on previouse games in the series with a much wider selection of weapons and abilities available for your soldiers to use. on the doen side the primary colours of the city are ghastly and realy are the worst point of the game but in my opinion the graphics have always been poor in the xcom series but the outstanding gameplay has made the graphics a trivial issue indeed.

To me this game is the second best in the series, the number one goes of course to X-Com: Ufo Defense.

The development of Apocalypse was very ambitious for it's age and I remember reading developer diaries in some magazine where they promised multiplayer! The game was going to be much larger and be even more in-depth, with political intrigue helping to bring the city to life. To bad these and other ideas was scrapped :(

I never really understood all the negativity towards real-time, mostly because I found it to work very well and quickly became my preferred mode but if this wasn't your kind of thing you could just chose Turn Based.

To players well versed in x-com this game may have some shortcomings which i attribute to the developer mess. However it's still a very enjoyable experience. I would give it 5 out of 5 if it wasn't for a poor dosbox solution which are likely to give you some headache with lag, etc.

X-Com Apocalypse review

Back in the time, Apocalypse received a mixed welcome. Real time and city warfare were a welcome addition to a successful franchise, yet not everyone enjoyed the changes and there were performance issues. Modern systems have of course no problem to cope with Apocalypse anymore. After all those years, replaying it eventually proved satisfactory. Yet not to the point of being hooked. UFO or even Ennemy from the deep are probably better choices if you want to play one of these older games. On the other hand, if you like the genre, you can't go wrong with Apocalypse, especially as this type of game is not well represented in nowadays catalogues...

One of my favourites games. Very good strategy and tactical game.

Some good changes:

- You fight in City

- Real-Time tactic battles

- Every unit (even scientists and technicans) have personality

- Other than X-com organizations

- new technologies and equipment

Not for those looking for modern eye-candy, it is still a pretty good game that is worth some hours of playing. The gameplay is pretty solid, even though at some point it begins to repeat itself a bit. But then again, the problem was even worse with Terror From The Deep. Though playing it now mostly because of the sentimental value, if I stubled upon it now I would still play it through. I'd suggest give it a try, and if you're into old games, then definately.

The best from the all X Com (UFO) games. Its HIGHLY recommended, especially if you want to emerge yourself in the X-com genre, so to call it.

Very progressive (for it time) graphic, but still the overall impression of the ambient, gameplay and story is still 10 out of 5!

Rated 3 stars. When it came out it was quite a fun game and thankfully not just a copy\add-on that terror from the deep was. Real time is an interesting addition, however it makes explosive weapons, especailly rocket launchers almost useless. Unless you want to kill and destroy everything on the map and run out of ammo super quick. An entire alien invasion located solely in one city is a little corner, but if you get past that its still fun. It is starting to look very dated though. I would recommend UFO Enemy unknown instead.

Great game in the X-Com series. Though, it must be said that Terror From The Deep, although much similar to UFO Defense, was a welcome refreshment for X-Com Fans, and the aimed goal of doing the same with Apocalypse was not acheived. The innovations make the game a little too cumbersome, such as the gigantic maps. Still, very cool and innovative when compared to the previous two.

Dated but still good. This game hasn't aged as well as it's predecessors (despite having more advanced graphics and gameplay). Interface feels cumbersome by modern standards, graphics are uninspired. Still, it's a rather successful representative of a not-so-common genre of tactical\strategy simulation: research is detailed enough, soldier development is lots of fun, and design of alien races is absolutely brilliant. Bonus points for diplomacy system (god relationship with factions provides specialized bonuses) and improved ship customization.
