GAME SUMMARY

Unepic

Rating: 4.7 (29 votes cast)

Unepic is a mixture of platform game, role game and joke that takes place in a huge castle of medieval fantasy. It is set in the eighty's style, but completed with the most actual features.

The hero is called Daniel, a normal guy from today: great videogame player, big lover of sci-fi movies, novice player of role games, pot-head and overall, a bit horny due to a misterious lack of success with girls. In the middle of a role game he is teleported to a castle and he thinks that he is having a massive hallucination due to any drug that their friends may poor in his beer while playing. So he decides to run his own adventure until the effect of the drug lasts.
In the castle, he will be possessed by a shadow, however this shadow cannot control him (being able only talk). The only way of the shadow to escape from the Hero’s body is by the death of the Hero, so the shadow will lie all the time giving false clues always looking for the Daniel’s death.
In the castle he will visit an oracle and find out what’s the goal of the story: to kill Harnakon, the master of the castle, and free Pure-Spirits. This story sounds typical for a role game, but during the adventure Daniel will discover that everything is not what it seems.

Worth a look

By Sarfus posted 1st May

This was a little dissapointing considering the great things I'd heard about it. The gameplay is a pretty neat mix of platformer/sorta-adventure-rpg (but very light on the rpg side). You get to choose which weapons and magic skills to specialise in, but the limited selection of effective weapons/magic options means all the "choices" are no-brainers. Also, once you've got the hang of the combat (doesn't take very long) you're pretty much sorted - the early sections of the game are by far the hardest, and the bosses are frankly lacklustre.

However, the art IS great. In my opinion anyway. Gave the game a really unique feel.

To return to my gripes, the game tries to be funny. It really, really tries. Unfortunately it just doesn't work. I mean not even a little.

Still, for an indie title it's definitely worth a look. The gameplay's pretty satisfying and the game's art and size are definitely appealing points.

I'm not usually that fond of platformers but Unepic really caught me in its net from the start.

It may have to do with the room-by-room design that I find myself far more comfortable with than the usual scrolling platformer. Not only a platformer though, Unepic also contains a valid role-playing mechanic. (though only considering loot and skills. There are no dialogue-options and no real story-choices)

This opens for the possibility to play through the game using different builds

While the game itself is competent and ambitious (~15h for me), the story is far more to the relaxed and funny side which in my mind brings a perfect balance to experience. Namedropping stuff from popular "nerd-culture" never gets old :)

All in all I consider Unepic to be one of the best indie-purchases I have made and it is well worth the asking price.

A satisfying and challenging 2D Action/Adventure game, Unepic is both an ingenious and entertaining addition to the indie game scene.

The game features a large degree of character customization and level progression, allowing a player to choose multiple combat styles throughout their adventure. At the same time, the game makes no effort to hold back on the Fourth Wall, instead taking a humorous approach to its narrative, oftentimes making references to other games via dialogue or Easter Eggs.

At its core, though, Unepic is a competent platformer with extensive exploration options, old-school combat, and a few plot twists. With its relatively low price, this game is worth the money.

Pretty much the perfect mix of a Metroidvania-ish game. Great humour and very spot on combat, fun art style, and will run on just about any computer I can imagine. Will take you around 12-15 hours to complete if you do everything, and there are many viable characte builds to make your way through the castle. Very enjoyable.

okay, so this game is a real gem. the only reason i didn't give it five stars is becuas it has some technical flaws on my new desktop that force me to restart every 5 minutes, luckily it works perfectly on my (7 year old) laptop. the game has a simple yet visually appealing design, as well as some hilarious gamer/counter culture references. after about 3 minutes i was completely hooked to the point that i really didn't care that it kept freezing on me, just because it let me re-read some of the jokes. the controls can get a little difficult to handle from time to time, but are just natural enough that i don't have to look down unless i'm using a quick key i haven't memorized yet, so no real complaints there. the basic design is exactly the same as an old school Metroid or Castlevania, which is great because those are two games that i go back to over and over again. the combat in the game is interesting and varied enough to make me want to figure it out. you have to learn the strengths of your different weapons and spells to really succeed instead of just clubbing everything with the same attack, and there is a little bit of intensity while you wait for your character to switch to an effective weapon, will i be able to stab that zombie before it reaches me? i hope so. if you like old school games, or even just love difficult reference jokes, this game is a must buy.

So far an enjoyable game! Well worth the asking price, and if you enjoy rpg games you'll most likely enjoy this one.

I haven't played through the game entirely, I've been told there's plenty of game hours and that the dev is trying to release it on steam. It seems to be humourous, but I cannot say too much on that as of yet!

This is definitely a game to pick up if you enjoy rpgs, are looking for humour, a decent length game, and don't have too much cash to spend. (tho last is not required)

Reminds me of the old Apple II games such as Aztec. Remembering where each item was and where you needed to use it without the game holding your hand everywhere. Tuff, but not impossible and definitely worth every penny.

An epic tale of a nerd in castle, what more could you ask for?

And did I mention there was an evil spirit possessing him? Yeah, go get the game.

Unepic Unbelievably Good!

The game is like Wonder Boy 2 on steroids, an excellent mix of RPG and Platform gaming that forms this cool little Coin Op style game.

Graphic's are quite and effects are nice for a 2D game and the developer's went all out creating an immersive enviroment with a top notch soundtrack that really gives the game atmosphere where needed.

A traditional RPG with loot gathering, experience leveling with upgradeable stats, spells, and potion creation which you can aquire by learning recipe's bought from vendors hidden throughout the game, i love how the different armours have indiviual appearence's and the varied use of the assortment of weapons is done well, having to use mace's to break barrels faster or cause more damage to specific creatures, Spears for longer reach etc etc.

The storyline is quite funny and has many reference's to characters from movie's and book's with plenty of gamer style humor that will make you smile. :)

The best platform game Since the Coin Op years in my opinion and a worthy RPG.

Unepic is truely EPIC!

I love this game. It combines sidescrollers with a hardcore RPG. There's a lot of character customization like any good RPG should have as well as tons of weapons, armor, spells and misc. items to find or buy. Even though the original language for this game was not English, you would never know. The humor is great as well. I'm really surprised those translated as good as they did. Normally you'll get some lost-in-translation kind of moments in the dialogue or writing, but I have yet to find one. If you've ever played Prince of Qin then you know what I mean by horrible translations.

This game is a steal at 10 bucks. I'm guessing it's quite long too. I've been playing for three days straight now and have only hit 17% of the total game.

Overall this has been the best purchase of the new year. I normally am not a fan of sidescrollers, but Terraria, Aztaka and Unepic are quickly changing the rules for what a "sidescroller" is.

Solid RPG/Platformer

Very enjoyable game that combines several play types. The map is huge, with the right number of shortcuts and a bit of backtracking to open new areas. The combat is a mix of easy and tough - some enemies are pushovers with the right weapons, others can overwhelm you if you aren't careful. Character customization is largely limited to gear and the weapons you focus on, but it's just enough to be interesting. Traps are varied enough to keep you on your toes. And there's some crafting too.

The story is a pleasant surprise, though certainly not complex. The dialog is littered with gaming and sci-fi/fantasy references but it's enjoyable enough even when you don't get the in-jokes.

The primary appeal of the game is going to be the map exploration and item collection, I'd say, though the humor helps too. If you enjoyed the original Metroid or Castlevania games it's a safe bet you'll like the design of Unepic. Grab the demo and give it a try.
