Unreal Gold review

Very fun old-school FPS which still look surprisingly decent, especially if you can find some high-res textures for it.

Not much in terms of story, but the great gameplay more than makes up for it. The weapons are plenty and unique, providing for a fast-paced game that's unlike most others that came before it.

If the game itself isn't enough for you there's also a mission editor which you can create your own maps. If you haven't played Unreal before, you might as well try it - you can't truly call yourself a PC gamer until you do.

Well, Unreal was and is somewhat iconic when it came out. But even on release you could not help noticing how eloquently boring this game actually is. Environments are beautiful and some easy puzzle add a welcome twist. But then the Enemy AI kick in. Sure they dodge but in such a unrealisticly fast way the quickly become a chore. Additional to this you weapons feel constantly underpowered and oddly designed. And for the guns that are actually usefull you constantly run out of ammo. So the overall immersion suffers a lot from this. Which is somehow a shame, because the grant story, would have been actually really good, if the game managed to keep up your interest.

This game is one of those games you played expecting another shooter. Strictly speaking, this game IS another shooter, however at the time the technical achievements of this game were off the charts. It was, for a time, the best looking game on the market, and it also sparked another series where each game is an astounding achievement in technology and modding, Unreal Tournament. On the gameplay standpoint, it really is simply another shooter, with some good fun attached. I recommend it for people who want a classic shooter with great action. It is also one of those games made before the time of Call of Duty and recharging health, so remember to get those medikits!
