Universe at War: Earth Assault review
PROS:
This game is, without a doubt, the most innovative RTS I've ever played. Each faction has a completely different play style, which keeps the game very interesting. The graphics are decent, even for today's standards. Gameplay reminds me of Command and Conquer. It has also been compared to the game Supreme Commander, though I have never played that game. I enjoyed the story thoroughly, but the campaign was rather short. However, skirmishes are fun enough to keep me playing.
CONS:
The biggest problem is Games for Windows Live. It would be cool to play with Xbox 360 owners, but the multiplayer community for this game is virtually nonexistant.
TL DR; Great singleplayer RTS, but no multiplayer community.
Universe at War: Earth Assault review
UAE is a cross between Command and Conguer and Supreme Commander so if you loved either of those series you will sure to love this as well, seeing as this game was developed by the same team that brought about the original C&C games you can clearly see the influence here, for me the levels are better designed than in Supreme Commander so this makes for a smoother experience and eases you into the game gradually and the story is nice and entertaining too, graphics hold up really well if you have a decent card, sound is clear with some very good fx. As the game uses the gfwl you can have access to all the achievements in the game as well and have access to the auto updates which is very good, gameplay wise it is on a par with Supreme Commander but with an easier learning curve so that's only a good thing,i'd give it a rating of 88%
A good game that doesn't quite make it to great.
There is a lot of good to be said about Universe at War: Earth Assault, it has nice graphics, the units show creativity and uniqueness and it has all of the essentials for a good RTS game (base building, resource management, unit creation etc.). The story is so-so in this game but I have seen much worse. There is no one single thing that causes this game to fall short of greatness, rather it seems to be lots of little things that when it comes down to it are rather difficult to single out. Actually I would have probably given the game a 4 star rating were it not for some problems getting the game to run right in Windows 7 x64. The bottom line; Universe at War: Earth Assault is a fun RTS game, just don't go into it expecting it to be Starcraft II and you probably won't be disappointed. I had a little bit of difficulty getting the game to run right in Windows 7 x64 but with a little bit of tweaking Direct X settings and compatibility modes it ended up running fine.
Universe at War: Earth Assault review
From the makers of the original C&C saga comes Universe At War: Earth Assault. The game is set in the fictitious distant future on Earth, in which an Alien race known as the Hierarchy has shown up on the surface of our beloved planet and is bent in wiping out life from it (obviously ourselves included)... however, before their dreaded plans come to fruition the Novus appear: a robotic race, they are the Hierarchy's nemesis and will oppose them everywhere they find them. This epic struggle finally awakes the Massari, a human-like race living below the surface of our planet: creators of the Hierarchy. Soon our planet is another battlefield in the intergalactic strife between these titans...
Graphics: Good... though there are certainly better ones outta there by now; however, when it just came out the game was indeed outstanding in this department... it's just a little outdated.
Gameplay: The tried and true formula of C&C: build a base... gather resources... expand... quash your foes! It isn't very usual that we happen upon a game that feels refreshing in this respect: but UaW accomplishes just that: is pure old school, but at the same time is bristling with youth...
Sound: Serviceable... nothing out of the ordinary.
All in all a 7/10... grab it if you like RTS, but certainly not a must play.
PS: DO REMEMBER TO SWITCH OFF DX10 RENDERING, OR ELSE THE GAME WILL CRASH WHEN QUITING A MISSION OR SOMETHING:
Universe at War: Earth Assault review
I'm very glad I bought this game, this is one of those games that I bought on impulse because it is on sale. In fact, I didn't touch this game right after buying it because I'm currently playing something else (Shadowgrounds series at the time of purchase) So I played it after I finished my other game.
Despite the tutorials and guide, the game can be quite confusing at first specially because it used a different approach and strategy. I've been playing a lot of strategy games before this but this one is definitely unique. It is in fact very impressive that each faction has a unique strategy. To elaborate further, the game has 3 factions, the Novus, the Heirarchy and the Masari, once you start playing one of them, you can't assume you know the others because they are far too different from each other. From the way they gather resource, to the way they contruct their structures and produce units, its very different. I really commend the people who have thought all these, a truly revolutionary RTS game.
Story is also nice, and the heroes have a very unique personality on each one of them which made the story rich. Although the story is a bit short, but it seems that the story can be expanded by probably an expansion, just like how starcraft ended up with broodwars,, which I do hope they do make an expansion for this game.
Graphics is stunning and it supports HD resolution (1920x1080). The sound is also great, the voice over fits the character personality.
Game play is also great but I recommend going through the tutorials first as they revolutionized the way player interacts with the interface so if you are an old RTS gamer, you might be confused a bit with the way they changed their UI.
Overall, I ranked this game at 5 over 5 because I really enjoyed this game, I'm finished with the campaign and currently doing skirmishes before I finally leave this game for another game and do another review so it might take some time before my next game review ^_^.
Universe at War: Earth Assault review
This game is disappointing. There are many problems, including awful performance during multiplayer games, but the main problem is Games for Windows Live. Limited key activations means you can only install the game once, the installer doesn't even work as downloaded and requires manual patches, and nobody plays online anyway. The community around this game is nonexistent and it has been abandoned by its developers. It's too bad, too. The game has a good concept with a fun story, single player isn't bad, and it has pretty nice graphics for the time. It also has a great soundtrack. If the game hadn't been crippled with the awful Games for Windows Live software, it would've been a decent RTS.
Universe at War: Earth Assault review
A traditional and conservative RTS that doesn't take many risks design and gameplay wise, but takes all that makes other games in the genre so good, making a very well built game.
The story, although not a very good one, is solid enough to entertain while it lasts, and the diverse achievements will give you a lot of replay value and make you look for strategies to get them.
The Games for Windows LIVE Client is a plus, and works like a charm.
The animations and models are very good taking into account the relatively low system requirements. The animations and battles are very good and intense, and the difficulty curve, although a bit steep, is nothing impossible.
Universe at War: Earth Assault review
This is actually one of the worst strategy games I have played. There is no feel to it the combat is forgetfull and everything feels slow and unfinished.
Stay far away from this
Universe at War: Earth Assault review
A classic-style RTS that feels like a combination of Red Alert/Command & Conquer and Starcraft, but with interesting mechanics such as the Hierarchy's mobile walkers and the Novus flow.
Top notch graphics, intuitive interface that minimizes annoying unit-by-unit micromanagement (I'm looking at you, Warcraft 3) and a decent campaign makes this a great game for any RTS game fan.
It's too bad the Games For Windows Live (GFWL) experiment ruined UAW's multiplayer. Originally, multiplayer required a paid GFWL Gold account. Obviously a flop from the start, considering there are plenty of other similar RTS' out there that give this service for free. Luckily multiplayer is free now, but player count is low.
I'd give this game 4.5 out of 5. It loses 1/2 a star due to: GFWL, a few minor interface issues (units knocked back by Hierarchy grunts' melee get removed from their unit group! plus a few other minor things) and possible balance issues (literally infinite resources for the Masari just seems wrong, whereas Hierarchy and Novus have to constantly scavenge the map for resources).
