Two Thrones

Rating: 3.4 (360 votes cast)

Two Thrones takes place in the years between 1337 and 1490, in a time where nobility and the church held the power. Noble families in France and England are engaged in an epic war for the control of the Two Thrones of the kingdoms, a battle that will define the future of the medieval Europe.

  • Play through LAN or the Internet against your friends.
  • Choose between several large nations, including England, France and Burgundy; or control one of the fractions in the War of the Roses.
  • Survive the treacherous political intrigues of medieval politics.
  • Develop your kingdom into an economic, political and military power, but be careful not to alienate the church, nobility, peasants or the merchant class on your way to supremacy.
  • Recruit noble knights with mighty castles, raise large hosts of spearmen to defend your realms and ignore the papal ban on crossbows.
  • Rely upon English longbowmen, or pay silver to recruit Swiss pikers.
  • Experience detailed historical events, which will guide your nation through the dark ages of history towards the renaissance.

Two Thrones review

Some parts of history naturally have more widespread appeal than others, if only because the stories have been retold many times, in many ways. So it's not surprising that Paradox's latest spin-off from Europa Universalis has moved to more recognizable territory. From the early medieval Scandinavia in Crown of the North, Two Thrones takes us to the most famous Western European conflicts of the 14th and 15th centuries: the Hundred Years' War and the War of the Roses. With France and England locked in fierce wars of succession for more than a century and a half, there's plenty of opportunity to reshape the map. But while this is certainly fertile ground for a game of conquest, Europa Universalis II's mechanics for combat and nation building have been simplified to the point of removing much of the challenge.

As a straightforward, value-priced grand strategy game, Two Thrones succeeds at providing a leisurely paced way of walking through a critical period that did much to decide the paths of England and France. However, the scope is certainly limited compared to other Paradox games, and Europa Universalis II isn't included in the package, as it was in Crown of the North. The relatively limited scope, clunky build interface, and lackluster AI mean this isn't a game for veteran strategy gamers looking for a challenge.

Fans of the hundred year war rejoice there's a game for you! What do you mean most PC gamers aren't history buffs? What do you mean you don't play games that don't have an AK47 in it? Well, this game is for the other type of gamers, the ones who don't mind thinking about each move for five minutes. It's some what of a game of Risk but more detailed. All and all, a great game (more so given the price) for someone who loves strategy games. NOTE: On Vista or Win7 you must set setup.exe or the GG launcher to XP SP 3 in order for the game to install correctly or else the game's main exe will me MIA.

For people who like history, this might be an interesting way of trying the job of a medieval ruler. You have to maintain the army, forge and break alliances, and during all this, you also have to keep the balance between the influence and happines of clergy, nobility, and common folk. The game is quite educational, including the tooltips, which are actually quite helpful and interesting here. For this price, you can't go too wrong with it. :-)

It's an not so difficult and complex strategy title, I would name it a "stragety light" game.

I would recommend this for Beginners and players who ere relatively new to the gnre to get a feeling for this type of game.

U find all mechanics that a strategy title needs, but in a simple and not so complex structure like other smimilar titles.

Really good for starters

I'd give this game 4 stars at the .34 price! While this game isn't great, it's easily worth 34 cents for an escape for a few hours. The best way to think of this game is to imagine every other paradox game, and take away all the deep complex elements. The game is simple, easy, and it's an excellent way to kill a few hours on an airplane or waiting for your flight.

Well, I must first say that this is my first game of its kind. For me it's a little difficult because the most complex game I played was Civ 3 and I can tell you that this one is more complex. But don't let the complexity fool you. This game will reward your patience and also, if you like history, it'll teach you a little.

Highly recommended!

In order to install Two Thrones on Windows 7/Vista one must access the compatibility options of the Gamersgate download application and set it to Windows XP before running. This should also apply to the Setup executable if one copies the temporary files for backup.

Good game if you're interested in Hundred Years War history, and also just for a few hours of relaxation. Pretty easy game and simple, it's a good introduction to strategy games before the later ones like EU3 or Victoria 2 for example.

Two Thrones is a real-time grand strategy video game developed and published by Paradox Entertainment. It's not so complex like Crusader Kings or Europa Universalis, but in my opinion you can spend a while playing this title.

Major bug, if only I had checked the FAQ first

By NeilDay posted 1st September 2011

I bought this because of the great reviews, and $1 price, but while downloading I kept getting a false positive virus warning. It wasn't until I checked support did I realize it's a problem related to the 1-click program, and neither of the solutions worked for. Tried this several times and same result.

Disappointed, sure, but for a buck . . . shrug.

two thrones is a simple and fun game, maybe not deep and complex as Europa Universalis, but has his share of complex management.

is a good title to start to learn some basic things about EU, higly recommended to newcomers to this franchise

For a buck its a great game to put on your comp and play when your downloading something like a movie or installing a big program. If you love EU-II or HOI2 then this is basically a casual game for you to pick up play and beat in about 4-5 sessions. Overall its great value for money.

The game was difficult to play. I love turn-based strategy, particularly 4x games, but this was not one that I loved. The tutorial and instructions did not actually prepare to play the game. I had to figure out the game's mechanics and game play on my own, which was laborious.

Not bad for the price. This game is made by the creators of the Europa Universalis series, but don't expect the same amount of depth. It is a very simplified version of the EU engine, but is good for a quick game, especially if you are new to the series. The interface is a lot simpler, and the battle system is not very deep. There is hardly an economy system to speak of. Overall, a decent lite strategy game.

By the way, if you have trouble installing the game in Vista 64, just set the installer to compatibility mode for XP and run as administrator, as well as make sure NOT to install it to C:\Program Files (x86) directory.

There's not too much to say about this. If you're wanting a bargain-basement introduction to the gameplay of the Europa Universalis games, well, it's hard not to get a buck's worth of entertainment out of this. However, the interface is quite old and the series has come a long way since this title, so it's appeal is otherwise limited.

While not on the grand scale of its Europa Universalis cousins, Two Thrones still gives you some strategic fun at a very reasonable price. The graphics are good enough that you can distinguish between objects, there is a variety of factions to play as, and it's a decent time killer.

After i played so many modern games - it's nice to play

an older game again.

It doesn't make me so agressive like newer games do.

I'm glad i did'nt buy it those times in the shop for 30

Bucks or more.

There is simply to less in it.

But for one Euro...yes nothing to loose and i even got my gamersgate free game...cause this was the 1st game i bought here

Really good game for the price. It has some depth to its gameplay but a more simpler Europa Universalis. The graphics are well done and so is the sound. My only complaint is the lack of music. But overall really good buy for just 1 buck.

A little like the classic Lords of the Realm from Sierra games, but with improved graphics and a larger map.

Interesting facts pop up in game and the controls can be picked up quite quickly. I did not find a tutorial though, but it is quite possible that I have simply overlooked it.

At this price (£0.90), it's an absolute steal !

Two Thrones is about XIV century, when England is in his most glorious moment of the Middle Age, they have the middle of France and is in Hundred Years' War with France. Is like Crown of the North, but in this version you only can play with France and England. In this game you can decide in what side you are in the most powerfull war of the middle age.

music? for this game ok

Not horrible, especially for the price, but there are much deeper and more engaging strategy titles out there. Didn't keep me entertained long enough to hook me. If you want a decent strategy title for cheap, try the original Europa Universalis instead.

By luckyducky posted 17th March 2010

Set during the Hundred Years War and the War of the Roses, Two Thrones is best described as Europa Universalis lite. It's not as complex or detailed as the EU games, and the scenarios are limited in scope, but for only a dollar, it's definitely worth a try.

A mini europa campaign with better graphics. This game is more in depth than EU1 and I find it more enjoyable. Still, this game is too deep for little kids.

Not bad a game. Fun in between other activities. Especially for this price. Two Thrones has slow gameplay though but a certain depth. Don't expect a Europa Universalis III but it's pleasant and worth it's 1 euro/dollar.
