Theatre Of War 2: Kursk 1943

Theatre of War 2: Kursk 1943, the historically accurate and detailed real-time tactical war game, welcomes military history fans to the battle which gave the Red Army the strategic initiative for the rest of the war. The new project in the award-winning Theatre of War series depicts the initial (defensive) stage of the Kursk battle.

Assuming the role of either the Russian or German battle group commander, acting under direct orders of division commanders Ivan Chistyakov or Valter Hoernlein, players will control their troops in historical scenarios on precisely reconstructed authentic battlefields.

Theatre of War 2: Battle of Caen

Theatre of War 2: Battle for Caen is an expansion pack for the critically acclaimed Theatre of War 2: Kursk 1943, an historical real-time tactical wargame. In Battle for Caen, players will control units of the British 11th Armored Division during Operation Epsom and Goodwood which took place from June 26 to July 19, 1944. Get ready for strong opposition though from the forces of the 2nd, 21st and 1st SS and 12th SS Panzer Divisions and witness even more spectacular battles involving dozens of impeccably modeled AFVs and hundreds of soldiers.

Theatre of War 2: Battle for Caen Special Edition review

Theatre of war is a great game series and is overlooked by many. It is a grander version of what men of war has to offer and is really fun to play once you get the hang of it. The graphics are good especially given the date when this game was released. It is a really good opportunity for anyone who is interested in ww2 to play out some of the really memorable battles

As the other reviewers said, don't buy this game if you are hoping to buy a coh. This game is actually something for the real strategists. The gameplay is slow and you need to keep an eye on every corner of the battlefield. Despite the slow gameplay and the fact that it can be very difficult to win, I can assure you that winning a game feels very rewarding. You can compare it a bit with shooters. Tow is the "Arma II or Red orchestra" in the niche of strategy games, where Company of heroes the "COD" is. So go for this one if you always thought that coh was too unrealistic, too fast or if you just wish to fulfill a challenge.

I personally prefer Men of War, but sometimes this game is a good change of pace, with its larger battlefields, slower battles, and more tactics+planning. Both series have their own merits, and both are very enjoyable.

This is a complex real-time strategy sequel / addon to Theatre of War 2.

+ Has a lot of content and new theatres - you get to fight on the Russian Front as well as in Normandy

+ Still has good graphics

+ Is much more realistic than normal WWII RTS games

+ It is slower paced than other RTS games. I think this is great as it allows you to properly command, rather than just descending into a click fest

- The user interface is still not very user friendly and the game is quite complex

Overall this is a great addition to the Theatre of War games.

An RTS for older more seasoned players of armchair general games. Slow paced but extremely tactical and though trial and error is the blueplate special when you do manage to pull off a win you feel like fist pumping. Recommended.

This game does not only have the Battle of Caen expansion but contains the entire Kursk 1943 scenarios for Germany and the USSR as well, making it a great package. Theatre of War can best be described as a pausable real time strategy game focused on hard core realism, where proper modeling of shot penetration, armor thickness, morale, ammunition amount etc. takes precedence over just selecting everything and clicking on an enemy. Very detailed, very intense...looks great even now. Word of warning, it is not easy, you will die over and over, often due to bad luck more than anything else, but once a plan comes off, it feels great!

It is a good rts game with larger battlefields than men of war, slower battles, more tactics and planning, better physics, but i think the AI plays worse. Besides that the game is great if you like slow based rts game.

The Single player is kind of fun, with units surviving each battle then able to be able to be promoted and awarded so there appear better in the next battle. You get three campaigns, German, Russian and British. However this game did lack polish and shine that get from games like COH. British sometimes responded with American accents and such. Russian units sometimes still had US markings. Some of you might say picky picky picky, but these kill immersion for me. Its like watching a movie with obvious factual errors.

Don't buy this if you are looking for action game like Company of Heroes. Its slow, which I don't mind at times. Slow in a tactical game like this can be good too. One major criticism is that it lacks immersion due to poor sound. The graphics are fine, although you will need a supercomputer to run this game at full settings and my PC was in the top quadrant and it was still on medium settings for me. Having said all that, I would have forgiven the developers of this game, if the AI was any good. I love Multiplayer COOP where a friend and myself would go up against the AI like in COH. However the word PATHETIC in neon lights in my mind when watching the AI display their foolishness in our MP COOP game. We gave up after a few games and tried 2 vs 2 with each of having a AI buddy. Again that word mentioned previously shined brightly in my mind. I think human vs human is where it's at with multi-player. The trouble is, there is no online scene at all that I could find. I would have hoped for mods to improve on the AI or more importantly the sound, but sadly no. It seems these days, game developers have a good idea for a game, but in the last stages of development forget the refinement needed and place it on the market hoping for some cash sooner rather then later. The question is, would they have made more money, if spent some extra time and finish the game properly.
