Tales of Monkey Island: Chapter 5 - Rise of the Pirate God review
A nice finish to the Tales. I enjoyed playing Guybrush as a ghost and a zombie. I wish the clues in the voodoo 'recipe' were less obvious though.. The game glitched in two places (Vista 64bit), nothing serious but its good to save periodically.
I read up a bit on the history of Monkey Island games and learned that TellTale Games wasn't the original creator and there were a four other installments in the series by Lucas Arts. Considering Telltale games didn't create the game, they did an even more amazing job bringing it back to life after almost 10 years!
P.S. wait for the credits to roll for a final cut scene..
Tales of Monkey Island: Chapter 5 - Rise of the Pirate God review
Final chapter follows up on everything else brilliantly. Many of the previous chapters running jokes come back in ways that might surprise you, and none caused me to groan as many of these reprisals in other games/shows often do.
The games puzzles explored Guybrush's lack of body really nicely and never felt too difficult to get through. Nearly every really enjoyable character game back and it was a pleasure to catch up with each.
I will say though that this was possibly the least interesting episode to explore on foot, and there was quite a lot of running back and forth that made enjoying this episode as much as I wanted to not possible.
But a great ending that was well worth playing through the previous episodes.
Tales of Monkey Island: Chapter 5 - Rise of the Pirate God review
Guybrush Threepwood, mighty pirate, returns in the fifth installation of the monkey island series, continuing to bumble his way through the Caribbean in search of adventure, booty and that elusive three headed monkey (he's behind you!).
Like many gamers of my generation, the Monkey Island franchise played a big part in my youth, and I still consider the first two games in the series to be among the greatest computer games ever developed. I found Curse and particularly Escape from monkey island to be lacking in respect to these, and therefore had held certain reservations about this release.
Tales of monkey island, however, has proved an unexpected return to form. The developers have abandoned certain concepts aimed at opening up the game to the general gaming market, and instead have relied upon the basic themes of character and plot development along the strong lines carved by early installations.
While some elements have still provided immense annoyance now and again (Elaine's character in particular frustrated the hell out of me) I still enjoyed this game enough to recommend it to any fans of the original games. However, if this is your first encounter with the monkey island series, I would stress that this is very much not an action adventure game... if you're at all curious as to why a seemingly basic game format has proved so popular with so many gamers, DOWNLOAD THE ORIGINAL GAMES!!! but better watch out for those piranha poodles...
