Swashbucklers: Blue vs. Grey is a Naval Action/RPG set in time of the American Civil War – the time of last pirate renaissance on the Caribbean. The Union fleet blockaded the Southern ports, rupturing all the trading connections of the Confederacy. In return, Confederate government started giving out the privateer patents, thus building a powerful fleet of commercial raiders, the best example of which was the legendary captain Raphael Semmes. Also, smuggling the goods through the blockade became very profitable, though risky, business and attracted numerous traders to attempts of running the blockade.

Abraham Gray, the main character, starts the game as a captain of a privately-owned vessel, but soon becomes involved into the story of blockade-running, military espionage and the ultimately powerful ironclad, built in Liverpool for the Confederacy. This ironclad alone could have change the course of war and bring the victory to the Rebel states. Then Abraham can join either Confederacy as a raider, or a Union as a spy.

The player is free to sail across the game’s world – from southern coasts of the USA and Florida to Jamaica and North Caribbean. He can trade and smuggle goods between nineteen ports – both free and blockaded, raid the cargo ships, battle the warships and ironclads and complete quests for either Union or Confederacy. Aside from naval combat, Swashbucklers features strong on-foot gameplay, in which Abraham slashes his way through in various locations, confronting dozens of various enemies and bosses.

The game’s role-playing system, based of three main characteristics and numerous perks, allows the player to develop the main character in various ways. He can improve his naval skills, learn new combos and shooting modes, or become the best trader in the Caribbean. Also, there are numerous options to upgrade the ship with Gatling guns, heavy weaponry, steam engines, or better sails.

This is a pretty decent game. Its playable but something feels like the developers rushed and then just abandoned it.

Combines several genres like strategy rpg or navigation, but without going into any and her story, her story does not exist. However, given eight hours of entertainment and its price is pretty good.

I purchased this game as part of the 1C Complete Pack and had not heard of this title before, however I decided to load up this game and give it a try to which I was not disappointed. I instantly fell in love with this game, the graphics and animation are excellent, land and sea battles are great fun, the open world keeps things interesting and has great replay value.

A fun RPG/ action game. This game turned out to be alot more fun than I expected, the combat is very smooth even using the mouse and keyboard. The missions are a little repetitive, but for the price of this game, it is worth it.

This title basically is Pirates set in the American civil war.

Sea battles are a bit more on the arcade side than pirates which isn't exactly a simulation either though.

You can fight, trade and plunder and also follow a main quest line or do some minor quests for characters you meet in town.

Ships can have steam engines and special guns which are quite fun in my opinion but overall the game is considerably worse than pirates so i'd only recommend it if you already own pirates or really are into the setting.

I run it on windows 7 but it required a bit of tweaking so i am not sure if it would run on all computer configurations.

I had alot of technical problems getting the game going on my Vista laptop and WinXP Desktop.

What I did get working was to listen to a "WAA WAA WAAA" Charlie Brown type voices when talking to the shop keeper while subtitles gave soemthing useful.

Walking in town is done with you going horizontally and vertically along diagonal streets. So you must key wiggle to go anywhere. (Why????)

Just getting to that took a week and several rounds with the Gametutor here on Gamersgate. When it came to the ship battle again I was crashing out. Gave up at that point already unimpressed.

Not bad, could be better. The idea here was clearly that someone wanted to write a clone of Sid Meier's Pirates!, except set in the American southeast, and that's exactly what they did. You can raid, pillage, and plunder up and down the eastern seaboard to your heart's content, and venture into the Gulf of Mexico as well.

...but that's about it. It's skimpy on features, the main plotline is weak, and in general it lacks the polish of Pirates!. But, that said, it's still pretty entertaining, especially if you're jonesing for a quick plundering fix.
