Star Trek Online review

By Jasonrosander posted 13th Sep 2011

Star Trek Online wasn't a bad game. In fact it was a rather good game to play for awhile. The best part for me was customizing the ship you were in command of. The only issue I really had with the game was how most of the side missions seemed to be constant repeats. Though if you do get a nice long chain mission I highly recommend finishing them. Not just for the rewards, but for those you meet, or the places you end up at.

Star Trek Online review

Star Trek Online, by Cryptic, is the successor to a failed MMO by development studio Perpetual Entertainment. The company could not sustain it though, so Cryptic bought the rights after Perpetual went bankrupt. Lots of people were looking forward to the game, and Cryptic's resurrection of the project was extremely exciting to many. Far before it was ready, Atari poised Cryptic to release the game, and it hit the market in early 2010.

Why the history lesson? Because this game was nowhere near ready for launch, and it showed. At launch, broken systems abounded all throughout the game, item crafting was in but there was no progress bar, even. You could not walk inside the interior of your starship, and there was a general lack of content.

However, more than one year later, many, many bugs and glitches have been fixed, and the game is expanding at a tremendous rate. Space combat has always been the game's strong suit, and it imparts a genuine Star Trek ambiance and feel as your make your way through various classic Star Trek settings. Ground combat, with phasers and bat'leths, however, is arguably the game's weakest point, but to give an idea of how Cryptic is bettering the game, within the next few months they are readying to release an overhaul of the ground combat to make it what it should have been at launch.

The long story made short is that Cryptic was not ready to release STO, but they have been scrambling ever since to fix the thing and bring it up to par, and that aside, it's a pretty darn good game, especially if you enjoy Star Trek. There is always room for improvement, but with the recent release of the Foundry Mission tools, allowing players to craft their own missions and, eventually, starbases and ship interiors, and other player-prompted releases and game changes, they have shown their greatest desire is to keep their fans playing the game (obviously)! To do that, they listen to them and try to make STO better for everyone.

So know, before you join the game, that it is a work in progress more than most other MMOs on the market today, but that it is fast becoming something fantastic. It isn't quite there yet, but there's a lot of fun to be had in this game, and I find it well worth my money to continue supporting Cryptic with every (frequent) new patch they release since they keep making the game better and more polished with each passing month, and new story-driven content is released regularly to keep my friends and I interested in the game's plot line and Trek stories.

Go fight the Klingons, or the Dominion, or disrupt nefarious Romulan plans, or push back the Borg - STO has a long way to go, but it's surprising how much the team has already accomplished, and there's a lot more coming very soon, most of it requested by the players.

I found Star Trek Online to be an enjoyable MMO, but it does have its flaws. However, these flaws can at times be overlooked as it is a fairly new MMO out there. The space combat is really enjoyable, its great piloting your own starship and battle klingon, romulans and other star trek races. The ground combat can be fun, but alot of the time it is frustrating and annoying (ie camera control.)

I think that there is alot of potential for this game and I can't wait to see where the developers take it.

Very easy game, fun up to RA but it goes downhill fast once you reach it, also now appears to be suffering from a seriously low population. Im a hard core trekkie and I regret buying it, id stay away at least a while.

A good game with decent space combat, but mediocre ground combat due to awkward controls. Graphics are good for an MMO and the sounds are also good too.

The game just feels a little bare bones at the moment, it needs a lot more content.

Although Star Trek Online currently leaves a lot to be desired, it's important to remember that it's a newly released MMO which will likely improve as patches, updates, and added content are made available.

As it stands, STO has an innovative space combat mode which is hampered by limited quest types and repetitive enemy models. The graphics are above par for an MMO and capture the look and feel of the Star Trek universe, although loading times between different areas are very lengthy.
