GAME SUMMARY

Stalingrad

Rating: 3.6 (312 votes cast)

"Stalingrad" is a historical military realtime strategy game created by DTF Games. It is based upon one of the pitched battles of World War II, the Battle of Stalingrad. The game is built with the modified version of the engine used in strategy title "Blitzkrieg", which was created by Nival Interactive.

The plot of the game unfolds during the period of July 1942 - January 1943 and tells the story of one of the most dramatic episodes of World War II. Featuring two detailed campaigns, "Stalingrad" will let the player take command over Wehrmacht and lead the German forces into the city, then switch to the Red Army and liberate the Soviet stronghold from the occupants and obliterate the 6th Army under the command of Gen. Paulus. In contrast to many other RTS games out there, each mission in "Stalingrad" is created with historical authenticity in mind and with reference to the actual place and time to real events that took place during the war. Besides, the missions are created in such a way that campaigns give an authentic picture of events at the theatre of war operations.

The Battle of Stalingrad became the turning point of World War II and one of the largest battles in the Eastern Front. Combat operations were spread over the territory of more than 100 sq. kilometers large, with over 2 million people involved in separate episodes on both sides. During the Battle of Stalingrad, which took place over 50 years ago, everything was put at stake. Historians believe that in 1942, the Battle of Stalingrad was the decisive point for all humankind, since the outcome of it meant victory or death for Wehrmacht. However, the city of Stalingrad turned into the tomb for the 6th Army of Wehrmacht and a symbol of failed hopes of world domination for the Third Reich.

For the Red Army, on the other hand, Stalingrad was a boot camp. The Russian forces went through the bitter defeats and retreats to the victory in one of the biggest combat operations of all times. Strategic scenario was unfortunate for us because of anti-aircraft ant anti-tank artillery shortage, and some divisions were low on ammo. Divisions sent by the General Staff reserve had no combat experience, others were tired out in previous battles. Open plains allowed the enemy aviation to strike hard at the Soviet troops, causing bitter losses and damages. Vanguard battles preceded heavy defensive fights, in which the military academy cadets participated. Just out of military schools, young officers went into assault alongside the rookies.

The Battle of Stalingrad provokes interest even today, and it is still a matter of heated debates. The city of Stalingrad will remain in the memory of humankind as the symbol of bitterness and suffering, and also as the place of great courage. In "Stalingrad", we plan to implement an accurate step-by-step replay of this battle and let the players feel like they are participating in the Battle of the Volga, which took place over 50 years ago. The title will be an interactive encyclopedia of the battle, a documentary directed by the player. Real events that took place in Stalingrad back in 1942, little-known historical facts and two accurate interconnected campaigns for the Germans and the Soviets, that’s what DTF Games is aiming for.’

Features:

  • 36 missions spanning the Wehrmacht and Red Army campaigns, 7 secret missions revealing little-known facts about the Battle of Stalingrad.
  • Accurate reconstruction of historical events, turning the game into a interactive encyclopedia
  • In-game map landscapes are based upon tactical maps and actual WWII aerial photography
  • Over 150 different infantry and armored vehicle units, created according to blueprints, dozens of unique buildings modeled based on actual footage: Stalingrad railway station, grain elevator, department store, the House of Specialists, and the Red October plant.
  • Vehicles, weapons and military forces never seen before in historical RTS games, including the experimental Panzerselbstfahrlafette V "Sturer Emil" howitzer, PZB-41/28 anti-tank gun, and the armored assault infantry of the Red Army.
  • Significant changes to the Blitzkrieg’s combat system, aimed at a new level of combat realism: shooting range and line of sight for infantry and armored units have been increased, artillery fire made less accurate, new parameters for infantry and armored units.
  • Original dub-metal soundtrack performed by St. Petersburg band "SKAFANDR"
  • New in-game interface

Bought this in 1C pack... AWESOME!

Yes, it's a 6-7 years old game, but it has some really nice feauters that not all the games of today have!

Infantry and tanks that can dig in, armor info, infantry with binoculars, and so on... FANTASTIC!!

I've played just the 1st mission, and been defeated due the lack of attention and planning it's required in order to been victorious.

If you like RTS and/or WW2 games, this game is a MUST HAVE.

I own boxed version of Stalingrad but as fan of Enigma engine games despite having hardcore PC I buy this game again. Blitzkrieg eastern front missions were good but Stalingrad focuses on details you might miss in original game. Take it, hold it, love it.

I had not expected to like this game but was pleasantly surprised. The menu and briefing didn't help with not expecting to like this game but once the game began I was thrown straight into the action, some kind of tutorial would have been nice but I quickly picked up the controls and was soon on my way.

An excellent battlefield simulator. It may LOOK like a classic RTS, such as Age of Empires or Rise of Nations, but it's more in the vein of Combat Mission or Close Combat.

The game sports very attractive 2D graphics that'll run on just about anything. Missions are challenging, but in a fair, historically accurate way.

This is an engrossing but difficult game. Expect to reload constantly until you learn the ropes. Your units are just as vulnerable as their historical counterparts were.

Thanks to the devs' focus on historical accuracy, it can also be very educational. It's one thing to read in a book that panzer columns were often followed by groups of infantry to watch their back. It's quite another to develop that strategy on your own as a natural reaction to the pressures of warfare.

An excellent game that any grognard should enjoy, with a smooth enough interface and pretty enough graphics to allow more general appeal for the adventurous. Highly recommended.

Stalingrad is another Blitzkrieg game, but many things have been improved compared to the old Blitzkrieg games: the bug where you can shoot through houses and other objects has finally been fixed, ranges of all units are much higher, planes fly at realistic speeds - and of course there are lots of new units to play with. Some of the missions are very difficult, though, especially because the enemy does surprisingly always know the location of your artillery 100 % but you can't even see where enemy artillery is by the orange dots anymore. Also there are no warehouses in your spawm which is VERY annoying and often causes you to loose for example because your tank convoy drives over a minefield, get detracked - and you cant repair it because your engineer truck is out of resources! But apart from these problems, a very good hardcore strategy game just like all the other Blitzkriegs. Didn't work on Windows 7 properly, but since it isn't supported I won't complain ;).
