For Classic RPG fans

By forgottenlor posted 8th December 2011

I gave this item 4 stars, because I am a diehard fan of the kind of classic rpgs which it tries to emulate, namely the Bard's Tale series and Might and Magic 1 & 2, all made at the end of the 1980s and beginning of the 1990s. These games tried to bring pen and paper roleplaying games to life, with just enough graphics and story to bring to life the world or dungeons which the characters were to explore. They are somewhat the anthethisis of modern RPGS where graphics, action, and (maybe) story are in the foreground, and game mechanics rather an afterthought. Sword and Sorcery Underworld does present some comfort features over such old games such as a quest log and automap. And the graphics though much better than those in such old rpgs, lacks any sort of animation. Even JRPG fans may consider them primative. Also the variety of opponents, items, and spells in Underworld, coincide with Might and Magic I and Bard's Tale I, and are less than what one saw in later sequels. I would recommend this to anyone who like me enjoys such old style RPGS. To anyone else: You might want to check out Bard's tale or Might and Magic 2 to know what you are getting into first. Such old style RPGS were always for a niche audience, which is one reason why big companies like Bioware have pushed role playing rules and mechanics to the background, so that they can appeal to a broader audience.
