Ship Simulator 2008 Collectors Edition review

By squiddiddler posted 31st March

Was a great deal when i got it. I enjoyed it. Never really played this type before. Kinda of lost interest after my skill level tapped out. But it's a good enough game to come back to in a year or so, if you're bored again.

I am not a serious ship simulator fan, but I had to purchase this because it was on sale. Everyday, I try to sink my sink just for the fun of it. That is my experience with this game, sinking ships.

What I don't like about this simulator is that you can only explorer a few decks (on average) of a ship. This is just a bust for the Titanic as you can only explorer the top section only. When you crash the ships is there very little to no visible damage during the collisions. Plus, you cannot sink the AI ships, just your own. There is no underwater scenery. The simulator will not let you look, but I got a good glimpse during one of my collisions. There is nothing under the waves, except a "white screen". Plus, the boat doesn't sink no more than a few hundred feet despite being out in the middle the "New York" Atlantic ocean. In the harbors, most of the time, part of the ship will stick out of the water which shows a bit of realism since harbors aren't deep. If I was serious about about a simulator, I would want the ability to traverse an entire ocean like the Atlantic, but you can't in this simulation (don't know of any that offer this feature). You are limited to so many square miles, and cannot go beyond a certain point.

Since I am not a serious boat simulator fan, it is hard for me to rate this. It is fun enough for me to sink a ship every day, so I would say that it warrants at least four stars.

Ship Simulator 2008 is a fun game that older people or adults will enjoy more than kids will, because it's more of a thinking game and not an arcade game. It's very worth it to get, even though the new Ship Simulator Extremes has just been released. Since this game is quite different than that game, you should really get both games, as well as Ship sim 2006, as well.

Also, be sure to go to the forums at http://forum.shipsim.com

and register with your serial code after purchase. You'll be able to download more ships, etc., for use with the game.

Be sure to get every Ship Sim game, this one, the new ship Sim Extremes, and Ship Sim 2006 complete. You'll be glad you did.

first of all this is a serious sim, but also really easy to get into. if you have ever wanted to control ships in a busy harbour then this is the game for you. its suprising in its intensity actually.

the ports are very detailed as are most of the ships, allowing you to walk around most of them in first person.

another advantage of this game is the excellent support of the company that makes it as they release free dlc once a week for this game

yes you can sail from the uk to the usa BUT be aware that once you leave a port it jumps you to a near coast map, leave that you jump to a mid ocean map, etc there is no smooth transition
