Supreme Ruler 2020 - Global Crisis review

By peiper posted 1st February

This game is very immersive and presents a lot of details to the player - the model is quite complex and some aspects are not explained in the manual. The vast array of units calls for epic battles, yet the AI lacks some I(ntelligence) as e.g. the huge Russian army may sit down while a tiny part of it cannot subdue Poland (this war happens almost automatically every time I launch the GC scenario...) A player can concentrate on different things but in most cases it will boil down to building the powerful army and finding an enemy to use it against. However a lot of options can be tweaked so no two games are the same. On the downside, there's only one unit size (battalion/ship/plane) and they cannot be grouped in brigades, divisions, flotillas etc. which requires some micromanagement. Still, a must for any armchair general set to dominate the future - invade the US with Chinese land units, reunite Balkans under one (Serbian) flag, or whatever you like (all of this can be done). A step forward from SR 2010 which was already a fantastic game. I own all of the series, including SRCW. A big plus for extensive tech support and a lot of patches.

The scope of this game is amazing - all the world with most of the worlds weapon systems modelled at the operational level. I bought SR2020 retail and SR2020 GC from Gamersgate. GC really does expand your options both in terms of scenarios and gameplay in a big way. The game itself is very deep and there is lots going on. Essentially you are running a country in pausable realtime. You need to deal not only with military flashpoints, but in terms of economic development. If you play as a democracy you need to be mindful of the voters at election time, or if a dictatorship bad decisions can lead to insurrections. The military game is deep and as with all good strategy games logistics come into play and getting to grips with this is essential - troops without supplies or fuel just won't last long.

This is an excellent add-on for a deep game. It is not for the casual gamer, since the initial learning curve is quite steep. It will reward a gamer who is willing to invest time getting to know the system. Recommended.

At this time the only realistic simulation of a modern country with a quite good interface. You should play it, if you like modern conflictsimulations!

If someone tells you Supreme Ruler 2020 is the most complicated game they've ever played, believe him. Even with a tutorial, the best way to learn the game is by pointing and clicking and waiting to see what will happen.

Global Crisis added many improvements to the game. Units are easier to control and spot on the map. You can set the hostilities on the map up to the point where every nation will be fighting ever other one.

For those who have the original game and aren't sure about spending the money for the expansion, I encourage you do so. It will add terrific additions to the game and make for an even better game.

This is a great expansion for an already good game. It fixes many problems with the original game, and has some great new scenarios. I'd strongly recommend picking up this expansion if you have SR2020 already.

A continuation of the single best strategy game of all time IMO. This game is by far the most realistic simulator of the modern day. No, the graphics arent very appealing. Sorry we cant actually send every country to war at any persons whim. What we CAN do is solve all those what if questions you've been asking all your life.

A definite buy. Hands down.

Great improvement to the original.

New tech making the game last longer.

Be prepared for a complex game, took me a few restarts to get the hang of the economy.

The stupid AI is the only downside, predictable moves by the enemy and as long as you aren´t heavily outnumberd there´s no way you can loose.

This adds a lot to the original. Not only the scenarios, the engine improvements were very helpful, particularly the battlegroup functionality it added. You can create quasi divisions with this, making unit management as some of the larger nations (USA, Russia, China) much easier when you're at war.

The major difference betveen SR2020 and SR2020 Global Crisis is the interface. with the Global Crisis version you finally have an interface that allows you to control your nation as well as in the old SR2010. Especially the ability to automatically transport units by sea is an essential feature for operations over seas.

Besides the interface there are also some new techs and units, but the interface is what makes the difference.

This game is either the very best RTS world simulation, or one of the worst. With no clear cut end game other then to conquor the world its replay value is limited, but the level of management and control makes this game indepth and still fun to play even for a geo political wargame RTS. I cant wait for the new one to come out.

I've been playing this game for almost 2 years now, and only with the most recent patch published by battlegoat, this game is FINALLY playable. I felt i need to write this review to give another point of view on this game, because others reviews here were published before the said patch.

Before that, it was just like City builder is telling in his review, moving icons on the map and that's about all it was. The trading was totally unbalanced and buggy sometime (you could get all techs from one country as long as it was allied without spending a penny due to a bug)

Now the IA is properly working (thou there are still units stucking when travelling over great distance, especially for naval ships), submarines are finally used by IA, and when IA is going at war it focus on one town to take then another and so on, and do not spread its unit and send them to die stupidly one by one like it was before this patch. IA also tend to use its aircrafts more than before.

IA still need to be improved to my opinion, but with the last patch the game is finally looking good, something it should have been since the beginning.

It's very true the developers are constantly improving this title and their forum on battlegoat.com is very active. The game can also be easily modified if you want to make your own scenario.

IpurchasedSupreme Ruler 2010 from my local store and then Global Crisis for a bargain onGamers gateas it is a worthwhile update.

The original was a let down…You basically have a number of dcenarios to try or play a random campaign and set yoyr own goals selecting a natio to lead. All good so far but select the wrong settings and you willend up with a frustrating and unrealistic chore toplay through.to win you willl need to force other nations to surrender by capturing theieir capital e.HQone setting has these all set to random locationsonly random really is random so much so impossible to find, its not good. The games aPPEAL Qa USINGallthe modern weapons in a blitzkrieg stylee to capture thcapitals. I’.m thinking, missile attacks attk helo strikes, airmobile assault, fast para raidsand so with amphib assault by fasst moving light armour or mech troops. No such luck everything ia total nightmare to load on to ships launcherss planeset.c The manual is hopeless I can only suggest trial an error or wading through forums etc.

Another thing if you play as a western nations don’t expect much action from th Aicontrollin the rest of the world. My best game was playing as Russia or one of its neighbours Your first task is your economy and building a sustainable source of electricity, a challenging and enjoyable part of the game which works well due to informative overlays and interface.

This game is, like virtually all grand strategy games set in the modern day highly disapointing. One thing that is common in Paradox developed games is that you can easily reload as another nation this game having been published but not developed by Paradox does not include that very valuable feature. Another thing that is important (at least to me) in making a grand strategy game fun is being able to change ones government type but foolishy you cannot. This expansion does offer many improvements to the original game so if you enjoyed the original game then this is for you. If you REALLY need to play a grand strategy game set in the modern day this is the best one out there right now. This studio is very good in supporting their game and the improvements offered in the Gold edition are available for free for those who purchased this. It is not a very good game but it can still kill a couple of hours.

This expansion to Supreme Ruller 2020 really adds a lot of new scenarios, units, and features, and makes the game what it was meant to be from the beginning. If you do not have the original game yet, please get Supreme Ruller 2020 Gold. You really want this expansion.

This is the Strategy Gamers dream come true and it is modifiable too. Support is excellent the developers are on the forum every day with useful information and individual guidance. The game does lack in the eye candy but the substance of the game, the use of modern combat vehicles and tactics on an operational or Battalion scale is very good. If you feel a particular weapons system is not represented well you can change the attack strengths, range and many other factors related to it in Excel.

I cannot recommend the title high enough in its category.

Supreme Ruler 2020 - Global Crisis review

Terribly boring title. I unfortunately bought both, 2020 and the expansion pack.

About the only thing enjoyable in this title was listening to the sound of gunfire and wishing that a stray bullet would hit me in the head and put me out of my misery playing this title.

The game completely lacks any visual style, eye candy affecianados beware, there is NONE! However in all fairness, the visual quality of 2020 is better than that of 2010, but it's still looks like someone threw it into the ugly forest and it got beat on by every tree in there.

I can not in good conscience suggest this game to the average war gamer. It would likely appeal to people that still enjoy Hex based war games, but if you need a little eye candy to keep you going, don't bother with this one.

I was looking for something deep, and on the surface this title looks very very deep, however once you really open it up and take it for a spin, you realize that there is a great deal of detail in this game that do nothing towards actually playing it and would appear to be nothing more than braniac candy, numbers to crunch, something thrown in to give it the look of being a very deep title.

For lack of anything else to say about it, I can only say that it's got to be the most boring title I've ever played and for the record, Im not a fan of games such as C&C. It's unfortunate, but the game is truly a snooze fest with little else to do but move some icons around the screen while *taking* over other landmasses.

The AI? What AI? It does seriously silly maneuvers that make no sence in the real world which this game would appear it wanted to try to replicate with all the settings that are possible, however in my opinion, it fails misreably (like my spelling)

Any military/strategy buff who doesn't own Supreme Ruler 2020 should download it immediately. I own well over 100 titles in the genre, and can't think of many games you can buy for $20 that will keep you busy for the rest of your life...

If you own and love SR2020, you're going to get this Expansion as well, unless you are on a very tight budget. Until a game editor is released, it will keep you busy with new scenarios and key improvements like AI naval invasions. But the best reason to buy it is to continue to support Battlegoat Studios. Similar to AGEOD, they continue to support their products with patches, and their forum is a great resource. Jaded as I am, the original Supreme Ruler 2010 blew me away when I discovered it about a year ago. What a diamond in the rough! Graphics aren't up to speed but it's got a great game editor, and is still available. 2020 and GC are moddable, but for now it's a pretty intense process.

This series is truly unique among wargames. The level of depth and real world data is just incredible if you appreciate that sort of thing. However, if you like brain-dead, simplistic games like Command & Conquer, then stay away. The SR series is real time pausable. (I just don't get the appeal of C&C style lasso the "cannon fodder" units and rush the enemy's base.) The SR2020 Series is a true wargamer's dream and also playable by the less-than-hardcore as well.

Very superior follow up, only the inablity to buy military units off the AI is about the only downsides, improved in just about every way new features, new techs , new options and diplomacy options plus all out global war.

Game runs flawlessly no bugs 9.8 out of 10 i gotta rate it
