Supreme Ruler 2020 review

I would say that this is one of the best every geo-political games ever made. There is one MAJOR downfall though and that is the speed. It becomes extremely impossible to play if you get into the game at the later stages. I remember when i had Russia and owned most of Asia and Africa. It was impossible to do anything, it would lag on and i have an i5 processor. Besides that though this is probably the best game out there if you like more detail than EU3 or HO3

Fun game

You really learn a lot from this game specially learning where most of the resources are. But its so slow! building takes forever, i wish it was fast. The bigger your military is, the slower the game gets. Other than that, this game is amazing.

Good game to play multiplayer, especially the scattered world scenario.

The game is not easy to understand so it takes a couple of hours to read into it but after that it is very fun to play.

This game is simply awesome. Like the first game, you choose any country you prefer and lead them to glory, or defeat...or mediocrity. It's really up to you what you want to do. I personally like to choose a stable world but there are settings that will bring you to warfare very quickly. My favorite playthrough involved making Argentina self-sufficient with a powerful military, then later conquering Brazil and Africa for the manpower, consumption and taxes. The plethora of military units is very satisfying, combat can be micromanaged for maximum effectiveness but the AI does a passable job at conquest if you set objectives skillfully and don't overwhelm it with too many at once. The economic model is robust and it is fun to tweak taxes, prices, and production. All in all, I have gotten several hundred hours of gameplay for the price of my purchase, so I consider this game money well spent if you enjoy long and complex strategic/economic simulation type games. Although the game is quite unique, I would say it most closely resembles Hearts of Iron, except the combat and economy is more micromanaged.

The ambition of this game is astounding! I love the pure detail of the weaponry and the strategy invloved! This is not for the faint hearted, it is for strategy fans only and not for someone buying or trying their very first strategy game! The graphics will not dazzle you but they do what they need to. The only thing missing in this game is the diplomacy factor, it all feels a little bit simple in that area. But overall it gave me hours of enjoyment and I would definately recommend to any strategy fan.

It's not easy to rate this game. There is no other game which simulates modern world in so advanced way. But on the other hand the game is totaly not user-friendly. It explains nothing in the begining and interface is so unclear. But if you can handle this, you gonna have hours of fun by ruling the world.

The Game that Keeps on Giving

By Xbwalker posted 16th November 2011

This is one of the absolute best games I have ever played. Not only can you play as any modern day nation and bring it to victory, but you can play as one of 250!!!! Beating a a game takes a long time as a smaller nation so this game has months, and years of replayability.

The graphics in this game are nothing to write home about but they get the job done. In fact, their simplicity allows this game to run much smoother on older systems. I would recommend this game for any micro managing megalomaniac.

I think that this game is fantastic, and if it weren't for the military part of the game I would give it 4-5 stars. The military is seeming unresponsive, overly complex, and extremely painful to manage in general. I think the most enjoyable part of the game is the economics, because you can control the development of your countries resources, and you can watch how you stack up against the production/supply/demand/etc of every country in the world. The last thing worth mentioning is that this game runs unnecessarily slow, I would suggest to the makers of the game that they remedy this by scaling down the military.

Brilliant game! But I found more interesting play with humans player because the IA is very stupid. This game offers a lot of hours of game but have a difficult learning curve.

Great game. If you like operational level war games, a modern time frame, and always wished you could have that with political/economic aspects at the national level, look no further. The game does a great job of blending them together, without being too shallow in its treatment of any one aspect. There is a definite learning curve, but it is easy to get started.

By bythorian posted 24th May 2011

Supreme Ruler 2020 is a modern taken on the grand strategy genre which is traditionally historic in nature. The learning curve even after tutorials is quite steep and the gameplay can be slow at times.

The game really relies on your dedication to the nation you have chosen to really realise its full potential. With proper understanding and control of the various economic, intelligence, military and land options at your disposal it is quite possible to lead a nation to global domiance of at the least a world power.

A serious downside however is military unit research. It would seem that the military units you are able to research are based on your countries capabilities in present day. If your nation has no strategic bombers today you won't be able to research them in future. Although you can buy unit designs from other nations such as the American B2 Stealth Bomber from any US state.

When you are aware of its limits and pick your nation carefully this game is an excellent way to pass the time.

The game is awkward to control and requires substantial knowledges about economies to get into.

The control of your army is worst of all. Individual units are all running around your country doing "something", slowing down gameplay in general but should you desire them to attack somewhere only a few units respond and not in a way that I consider smart. Individual control is available but for most armies this is not an option as there are too many units to give them all orders. Except of course when you want your units someone overseas. Then you need to give individual orders for every single unit as the AI isn't capable of performing this task itself.

Feedback about how your actions effect the world are sparse. If you know how a certain action should affect your economy in theory you will notice the affects in practice as well but since there is no feedback or projections given on how your country will respond to you, say, building a new factory you need to know this before you play the game to make sense of it when you play the game.

Getting into the game is a painful process of trail and a lot of error. Most damming of however is the lack of reward after all your effort. The promise of being able to play through a troubled period of time as one of the nations on earth is never delivered.

My personal recommendation to anyone thinking of buying this is, don't. Don't touch it with a bargepole. Don't even think about it.

By Joelebaron92 posted 24th January 2011

Put simply this game is great. If you are intrigued by modern politics, war and strategy then this game is for you. At under $10 you can't beat the experience and the hours of addicting play.

The interface may seem a bit overwhelming at first, and the geography, economic decisions, diplomacy and number of units you have to manage requires you to take your first game and just play around with things. After a short while, it all becomes clear and you can really get into the action. The "ministers" will do much of the heavy lifting for you at first. You will want to take over once you get a solid game going.

The only downfall is that after hours of playing (15+), I wanted more from the AI. I hear that the expansion fixes this somewhat, but I have yet to pony up the extra cash. Once I dominate the world, then maybe I will take up the new challenge.

It is definitely a smart buy for a good game.

Suprisingly realistic and fun. Specific units used in the countries where thay are actually fielded, also when you take land of a country it immidiately becomes yours. You don't have to annex it later, very innovative. I give it a 4.5 out of 5.

Supreme Ruler 2020 is a surprisingly good and realistic games. It has a well studied game world with GDP/c, population figures, real world units like eg. T-55, F/A-18 Hornet, Mig-21, DDG-1000 Zumwalt etc.. And is is also highly/easily moddable. It does not use provinces like in eg. any paradox game, but instead use "Hexes", which are small hexes that make up the basic world and countries. All in all it is a very good game, with the latest patch, also not that much bugs.

It isn't a game for everyone, and it does have a fair few problems, but if you really get into it, SR2020 can be a simple brilliant game.

It has a level of depth rarely seen in games, fast paced action (At times) and a complex economic system.

The game is worth a try, because it's not something you'd want to miss out on.

This is definitely an addicting game and offers an in depth realistic view of what running a nation is like. How you can control your nations resource output, how much of it you sell and what you buy adds to the realism. Once problem that I have found is the lack of map detail since it is not 3D but 2D and limits your perspective when moving troops. Also the game play is extremely slow and it takes hours of playing to simply build certain structures. When attacking cities game play is also very slow and the lack of RTS makes it a dragged out experience. The game can be fun when dealing with international politics but overall I do not think that it is that special of a game, I give it a 2 out of 5.

This game is complex to the level of sadistic, and understanding it all take as much effort as learning a new language. However, the pay off is well worth it, the game has so many factors to look out for and so many things to consider. It certainly has a fair amount of flaws, but if you can get into this game it will hold you in.

This game, quite simply, angers me. It promises allot, and almost delivers. It offered something wonderful and eminently chewy, something to really get your teeth into. But they failed, hard. The game is, firstly, hideously convoluted and hides all information under a million sub screens, making it a chore to do the simplest tasks. It fortunately lets you hand over many of the tasks of running your government (including building, diplomacy and controlling your troops) to the very competent AI to auto-manage. The problem here is that you are left with nothing to do other than watch the AI but heads with itself and have a wonderful time doing it. In the mean time you would best spend your time doing something else, at least until they have patched this game to a point where it works.

The game is fun and nice to play the only downside of the game is that it is really slow in the sense that progress can take days but its really nice game and realistic.

possible improvement could be made in making it easir for player to play online multiplayer as IP address connection is difficult to achieve. Religion should also have more importance in the game and diplomatic should improve by small tweaks.

I like the game and recommend it if u like games where ur the ruler of the country.

This is one of those games you need to spend ages learning to master. I have no doubt it will please some of the deeper strategy-gamers, but I advice anyone to try the demo first. There is an impressive number of technologies and units, but the diplomacy is lacking in the A.I-side. Those expecting a real-life diplomacy will be disappointed.

Worse interface and sluggish unit control, this game has actually degraded from the first game, if this had been a stand alone game I would give it 4 stars but since its actually worse than the first game I give it 3 stars.

this is a good game, its a game for those who combine thier brain to it. it has many great things, but i would like to see more, senate, private economy, more diplomacy options like giving land away or satilite nation, UN options to influnce the game like donation of money to gain influence, and also vote on sactions and other things of that nature. this is war game and a economic game not so much a geo-political war game, i would like it to be both a geo-political war game combined with economics and more political options. but all in all i will rate this game a 4.5, buy the game its great and continu3e to support battlegoat they need all the help they can get!

The most realistic game like it that ive ever played. in my opinion, its a combination of Risk, Command & Conquer, and civilization.

It is a pretty good buy, far superiour to Superpower 2 which it closely resembles. The controls are of course highly complex and the tutorials were not very effective or interesting. It is way to hard to launch nuclear attacks and the game is rather laggy. The graphics are quite pretty for a grand strategy game though. It has a fair number of scenarios and if you save often the crashing to desktop shouldn't be much of a problem.

Very good game, slightly laggy on large world map. Some minor bugs in inital version. Land based AI very good, bugs will be patched in next update. Naval and invasions the AI is very weak so at the moment that will influence youre gameplay, multiplayer could be more of a challange,

The lack of a central mulitplayer server is a downside but multiplayer as is is very smooth and great ive played 2 games.

With some additional patching this game will just be about perfect it does look they have done a lot of good work already the economic side is flawless the diplomatic side of the game is id say 90% complete

giving it 4.8 out of 5
