Star Prospector review

By oogla posted 19th March

Star Prospector is a basic RTS. Land on the planet, harvest ores and fuel, build units. Mission objectives vary from planet to planet but generally revolve around collecting x resources or defeating y enemies.

The RTS game is enjoyable. It's pace is slow, but the missions are generally short enough to finish in a half hour or so. In most cases the biggest challenge is defeating any bad guys with your units before you run out of ores to make more. There are usually extra resources and enemies scattered around the map for you to plunder/fight after the mission objectives are met if you feel like playing on a given planet for a while longer.

There are some varied planet environments. Barren deserts, strange fungus laden swamps, rivers and so on. While not a lot, they do serve to add some variety to what you see on the screen.

In addition to the main game, there is also a tower defense mini game. This game uses similar units to what are in the main game and is very fun. Like the main game, the tower defense part does not do anything new or revolutionary, but it is solid and fun. A nice supplement to the total game which I find myself playing more than the main campaign.

The graphics are good, again nothing revolutionary. The sound includes a satisfactory collection of zaps, bangs and booms. The UI is functional, it works well and is easy to use. My 10 year old was able to pick this up, run through the tutorial, and was gathering resources and killing enemies with no input from me at all. So that says a lot about the functionality of the user interface.

Is Star Prospector worth the current $10 full price? Well, there are lots of better games out there that can be had for this price on sale. But if you've played those already, Star Prospector will serve for a more of the same distraction until the next big name game comes along. If you catch this game on a sale, it is very worth picking up.

A game that offers nothing

By IBI posted 25th February

Star Prospector has no great flaws, the low rating is down to the lack of anything of interest. Story? Token. Tactics? Very little. Challenge? None.

When you can pick up top rated games in sales for very little the only reason to go for a low budget game is if it tried something unique or does a particular aspect very well. The developers of Star Prospector appear to have spread themselves too thinly and the result is something that doesn't do anything to hold your attention.

Needs balancing, but still a fun RM game.

It's a basic resource management game, at it's core. You land on a planet, you set up a base camp (consisting of an ore processing plant, droid factory, and fuel pumps) and you proceed to suck the planet dry of just about everything. Your pre-game, player setup choices determine the difficulty you'll have in dealing with the baddies on the TUTORIAL mission, which is still a bit steep. Just one 'Beetle' monster can wipe out your whole base if you don't focus immediately on building a battalion of laser droids, and even then the beetle will succeed in demolishing said droids before you end up having to take it out yourself. Not the ideal learning curve.

Nice casual fun

Missions are not overly long, so you can just pop in, do the deed,

earn a few xp, possibly upgrade you gear, and see you next lunch break.

Worth the expense when on sale, so long as you keep in mind that it's

going to be more or less the same mission repeated throughout the

entire game; and you probably won't want to see the end of it.

The game is relatively slow paced, predictable and, I am afraid to say, boring. It did not engage my interest for very long. I would not invest money in it and I would never play it unless it was free and, even then, I still use my time playing something else.

Star Prospector is a strategy game exclusively single player who invites us - as the name suggests - a prospector in space. The aim is to explore the galaxy in search of ore, but it will obviously not be limited to this single activity.

The game combines a fairly run-of-the-mill RTS with an overarching galaxy map campaign. However, it suffers from constant crashes to desktop and is fairly slow, with units taking a long time to build. A good game if you are into this sort of thing.

This is a pretty standard RTS style game. Base building, resource management, fighting enemies and completing set objectives while balancing the other three are main focuses. I've played RTS games a lot and varying levels of them and this stays true to the routes of the genre. The problem with that is it is a lot slower paced than games are made now. Units take longer to build than you'd want in an RTS and I have struggled with it. At the same time there are upgrades available, though limited, and a main walker/contructor (similar to Supreme Commander). I'm not sure I'd have been happy to buy at full price, as it feels like an indie game, but I'd advise you consider buying it on sale if you like the genre and just take a few minutes from AAA games and try something a little different

Nice idea and so on, but even the demo get's boring in the 'end' and the full game just goes on from there without changing much.

Try the demo and buy it only if you can imagine yourself continuing that same repetitive gameplay for many hours.

i LOVE this game! its actually the third time im buying it (got it from gamestop first.. suffice to say "EWW!" and now im adding it to the gamersgate library.

it may be a bit too slow for some of the RTS junkies out there, but if you enjoy rts games more for the journey than the destination this game will easily gobble up the hours. i like that you can upgrade gear in the field instead of how some games have it so you can only do it AFTER the mission. i also thought the resource management was really well balanced and i even dig the soundtrack (to me the absolute LEAST important thing in a game).

its really one of the most soothing games i have ever played.

Good but not a $10 game

Will remind you of starcraft. Overall, I like this game, pick it up if you are into RTS type games when it goes on sale. This was in my 3/$3.99 from the Indiefort Promo and will get some serious play time on my laptop. Nothing special to write home about but I do like the upgrade system to the "commander" / POD as that gives you some flexibility to tweak your missions. Above Average!

I found the game rather slow and boring, and too plain.

resembels starcraft, but not in a good way.

it feels as if the game is trying to copy some successful concepts - but it does so very poorly

It's a pretty much standard RTS, where you have a Rig (Commander) who builds the builds and can fight.

You have to gather 2 different resources and so on.

After each mission you gain Credits and Exp, which can be spend to buy new gears, upgrades for buildings or new units. Exp is used to determine which stuff you may buy.

You also get skills points to upgrade your Rig.

Overall, it's a nice game, just wish you could replay completed missions.

While Star Prospector brings that Total Annihilation vibe to the game, it also infuses it with rpg aspects allowing players to customize the commander's gear and appearance(to a limited degree). While the base game play does not break any new grounds, it still tries to entertain. Graphics-wise, the game feels dated, or un-polished, and the occasional bug and glitch(e.g. path-finding issues, A.I. oddities, etc.) pulls players out of the game more often than not. The way tech and upgrades are handled breaths some fresh air into the game by allowing players to choose technology upgrades(units, buildings) rather than a linear unlock system that most rts games used to have.

Overall it's a good way to spend some time, but for now, it not a game that will be winning any awards anytime noob

When you take a look on this game, the visuals maybe can remind you of Starcraft. If you start it, the gameplay can remind you of Starcraft. So, the thing is simple: If you liked Starcraft, you can enjoy this well constructed space strategy game. SIMPLE.

I found the game alot of fun. It seems similar to me to Starcraft I. I am playing through the first time on "Easy" setting. The graphics are nice. The soundtrack is pleasant. There are several types of missions that you can accept. There is a storyline to discover through logs you find on the planets.

In the easy mode (not sure if this will change in harder modes) there is usually one creature nest which will spawn new creatures to attack your base until you destroy it. There is always one Scavenger drop ship which will spawn Scavenger units to attack your base until you destroy it. The groups that attack you get more difficult to defeat as you move from Level 1 to higher level missions. I am doing level seven missions now. They go up to level 10 to complete the game. There is always a junk pile somewhere on the map where you can find two pieces of equipment. Some Scavenger units also drop technology and there is a scavenger base somewhere on each map where you can loot some additional items after you defeat the Scavenger owners. The scavenger "enhanced" equipment is better than what you can buy at the store.

The map starts out covered by fog of war and you uncover it by exploring with your Prospector unit or a created Bot. You can create a variety of normal and heavy bots. As you progress in levels as a prospector, building and unit blueprints become available for purchase in the store and you also get them as loot in the missions. As you increase in level you can upgrade your prospector rig to make it more formidable in combat. You can also buy shield and health recharge units from the store which allow you to fix and restore shields to your units in the midst of combat.

I just find it a very fun game to play. I plan to play through all the missions again on the normal mode at least. I only gave it four stars because there is a alot of repetition. The missions all fall into a dozen or so categories. The maps are pretty uniform in types. Sometime a river divides the field in two. The things normally found in a scenario are usually found around the edges or corners of the map. After you get a feel for playing you can usually guess about where the drop ship is from the direction attacks are coming from. Anything you need to access in a mission will be guarded by scavenger units.

The variety of different bots and defensive structures you can build are interesting. You can also build a structure which allows you to upgrade your heavy bots to make them quite devastating but it costs alot of minerals and fuel to do all of the upgrades. There are ground and air units.

After my prospector unit was upgraded to a lethal level, I was able to take most things down singlehandedly without the help of other created bots. The key was to take alot of shield and health restoration along and work it strategically so I was not fighting everything at once.

I have had no problem with the game crashing. It seems to have been well tested or maybe it is an older game and the bugs have been worked out. You can do a mission in 30 minutes to an hour so it is great if you want to play something that does not take all day. I think it is a great game and recommend it highly!

Highly Polished and Works Well on Old Systems

I'm running:

AMD 2400+ Single Core

1 Gig Ram

Nvidia GeForce 7300GT 512MB

Win XP SP3 32-bit

Happy to say that this game runs perfectly clean and smooth with default settings.

I've played roughly about six missions and just to summarize so far the game has not been necessarily about building one gigantic base to attack another but building up small outposts to create a large enough army to make it to the next to get around the map and complete main objectives like taking down large enemies, repairing structures and so on.

Ideally you need to use your main mech unit to scan rocks in the vicinity to see if they provide ore which is your main resource.

Once mined, using mech or mining robots, you also need to find fuel pools around the environment to siphon from.

The most original feature is the game's shop, in between missions, where in you can purchase upgrades for your mech or sell upgrades that you found on the field (usually by searching wreckage) and spending money to unlock new units, structures and parts for your mech.

You earn funds by completing missions. Both during and for the mission you also earn experience points which can be used to level up a handful of your mech's main attributes.

Well worth the ten dollars and is unique enough to be entertaining even for those who may have burnt themselves out on the RTS genera.

Good Game!

This game is a good bit of fun! The visuals are solid, the gameplay is entertaining, and the replayability makes me sure I will be playing this game for a long while yet. Between mechs, adventuring, and looting, how can you go wrong?
