Simon the Sorcerer 5: who'd even want contact review

a decent game that fails to live up to the originals charm. The puzzles are good but not greats. The voices are horrible and often are poor choices for the characters but the visuals are great.

Simon the Sorcerer 5: who'd even want contact review

Simon the Sorcerer never was among the greatest of adventure series, but the first two games in the series are, by some, considered to be a sort of classics. After the abysmal third part most people believed, that the series was done for. But then the series was resurrected by a German company. Go figure.

As a character Simon never was very likeable. He was, to some degree, foulmouthed, egoistical, mean spirited and more than a little juvenile. This all was transferred in the jokes, which were a bit crude and sexist, but at least they were done in moderation. This is something I really can't say about Simon's 5th adventure. The man is totally unlikeable. The mean streak he is on goes so overboard, that the jokes just isn't fun anymore. And that for me caused the game to be unfunny, so that it just wasn't entertaining to play through.

The graphics are quite nice though. The character models are detailed and well done and they fit nicely to the detailed 2D backgrounds. Animation is in places a bit clunky, but mostly passable. The biggest issue for me was the voice acting, especially Simon's actor was pretty plain. Music didn't stroke a chord with me either.

In a nutshell, I really can't say that I'm waiting for a next episode of the adventures of juvenile sorcerer.

Previous game of Simon was not so funny as classical 1 and 2. But 5 is back with good style. Simon vs Aliens? Of course! Need to cooperate with maximum feminised Red Hood? Of course! Simon in troubles? Aye! Many starnge creatures? Yeah! Simon must face alien invasion on fantasy kingdom, so he decided to... run away. With Alix. But as true hero he want to revenge his planet. Simon 5 is game for few hours and gameplay is constructed in intersting way - You have to expect unexpectable - all with humour and funny jokes.

I have followed Simon the Sorcerer since #2, so even though #3 gave me the heebie-jeebies, I was more than willing to try out 5. I'm not sure if that was a good thing or not.

Gameplay is very smooth and high quality graphics- Some people complain about the 3D models, but I think they are mostly well done and not blocky like many 3D characters.

Most unfortunately Simon isn't English anymore. He lost that dry, British wit to a more conventional, standard voice-over with not many clever gags at all. Most were just crass, but you don't have to listen to it due to the invention of a volume dial so don't let that turn you off the idea.

Many scenes are very, VERY easy- with only a few objects to be found in an area so its not hard at all to figure out what to do- which made many moments boring, predictable and not very thoughtful- Not like the previous adventures- and the storyline completely falls apart sometimes... And there are almost no PUZZLES. Tricky situations maybe, but not any puzzles where you really have to scratch your head and think. Close your eyes, spin around, point at an object and thats the answer.

But all that being said, if you have followed Simon for as long as I have, or even longer, you'll just want to play it because it's Simon, and for that reason it is amusing enough and weird enough to keep you entertained for a day or two.

It's a good game but a bit too short ( took me less than 10 hours to finish it and i click on every single object every time). But it's very funny, I find myself laught loud at what Simon's said. Simon is like in the first 2 games funny and smart. It has a very long final where narrator told us what happen to all characters we see in the game. If you replay it a second time there are a few more action that wans't there on first time.

This is spoiler free review.

It's a good game with a couple of flaws. Firstly its very short (it tooks me 6 hours and I wasn't in a hurry). Secondly some of the humor around the Red Riding Hood character comes off as unpleasent and cheap.

While this game was originally developed and released for the German market, the translation into English and voice overs are all native speaker quality.

Purest will hate the help system as it provides complete solutions to each problem in game. They may also find it a bit easy. Non-purests will hate that there isn't a 'highlight hotspot' key and some pixel hunting is involved.

The puzzles are dressed up in original clothing and there was only one point in the games where I felt the solution was illogical or unguessable. The hint system told me exactly what to do to solve the puzzle, but I still don't understand what that was the solution.
