Shining Force review

By Darkmire posted 11th November 2011

This is a classic strategy RPG similar to Fire Emblem. While it can be archaic at times, it holds up quite well. You have a team of characters that you move one at a time on a grid, almost in a chess-like fashion. Each character can move a certain number of spaces depending on terrain, and either position themselves right next to enemies to attack, or for long range attacks like magic and arrows they can position themselves more than one tile away. After you make a move for all of your characters, the enemies moves their characters, and so on. When they are defeated or you reach your goal, the story progresses and you move on. As I said, it holds up well because it is strategy-based, and thus more about logic than reflexes. The user interface can be slow and cumbersome, but it's still more than playable and definitely worth a try if you like retro graphics, music and anime-style games.

Easily worth £1. Best £1 I've spent in my entire life.

But I probably should've bought the Megadrive Volume 4 pack like the fellow below said. Oh well.

This is part of the megadrive volume 4 pack. If you pay attention, you can get the whole pack for 7.50 USD, which includes extra games besides SF, SF2 and Shining in the Darkness, the last of the series, for the same price.

I haven't spent much time with this game, as I was a Nintendo kid when it was new, but what I've spent it is easily worth the pricetag I paid for it and I can tell I will get hours of enjoyment from it.
