Settlers 7 Deluxe Gold Edition (Mac) review

By eddible posted 16th April 2012

I am not familiar with the earlier games in the Settlers franchise; I've only played Settlers 6 (Rise of an Empire) and then Settlers 7. So whilst I can't say much in comparison to the early games, I'll compare this to number 6.

This game is very pretty, with some really stunning graphics. My laptop can really only handle the graphics on medium, and it's still really atheistically pleasing. The focus in S7 is much, much more on warfare than S6, and that becomes evident from the very first mission. Rather than building separate buildings for each and every task (like fish huts, grain farms etc.), you instead build core buildings which you then add "work houses" to. So, a lodge, for example, allows you to add a forester, sawmill and other buildings rather than there being a separate building for each function. This makes playing 'neater' in my opinion, but I suppose it's preference.

I do find the slightly cartoonish look to Settlers is awesome, making the battles quite funny and entertaining. The graphics are amazing, but they're not realistic as such. The new victory point system does make the game feel faster paced than S6, where you could take a lot of time to build up a city. Here, you need to keep on top of competitors by constantly upgrading, building armies and expanding territory. I feel this gives the game a slightly more exciting feel, but others might prefer the slow, take-your-time approach of S6 (and maybe earlier games, I don't know). Still, resource collecting is of major importance - there's still a balance. You can't just rush in, build a huge army and conquer the world. Without an established food, wood, stone etc. production, you're stuffed. I like the balance of war and economy in S7, it's well implemented.

If you like city-building, strategy games with good graphics and lots of fun - I'd definitely recommend this. If you can grab it cheap, you've no excuse really!
