Resident Evil 5

Rating: 4.2 (90 votes cast)

The biohazard threat has not ended: Just when it seemed that the menace of Resident Evil had been destroyed, along comes a new terror to send shivers down player’s spines. Chris Redfield, returning Resident Evil hero, has followed the path of the evil literally around the globe. After joining a new organization, Chris heads to Africa where the latest bioterrorism threat is literally transforming the people and animals of the city into mindless, maddened creatures. He is joined by a new partner, Sheva Alomar, who lends her strength, intelligence and sharp-shooting skills to the mission.  In order to survive, Chris and Sheva must work together to take on the challenges of discovering the truth behind this evil plot. Utilizing a revolutionary new co-op mode of gameplay, players will be able to assume control of either Chris or Sheva and experience Resident Evil in new ways. In Resident Evil 5, Capcom will have players fearing the daylight as much as they have feared shadow in previous games.

Co-producer and series veterans Jun Takeuchi (Lost Planet) and Masachicka Kawata (Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition, Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles) unleashes an unprecedented level of fear for the next generation in Resident Evil 5, the sequel to one of the highest-rated videogames in history, according to Metacritic.com and Gamerankings.com. Promising to revolutionize the series by delivering an unbelievable level of detail, realism and control, Resident Evil 5 is certain to bring new fans to the series. New technology developed specifically for the game, as well as incredible changes to both the gameplay and world of Resident Evil will make this a must-have game for gamers across the globe.

The latest in the Resident Evil series, which has sold over 34 million units since the original game was released in 1996, as well as spawned a multi-million dollar trilogy of films from Sony Pictures. Resident Evil 5 will revolutionize the Resident Evil series, just as Resident Evil 4 did.

Features

  • Chris Redfield, protagonist of the original Resident Evil and Resident Evil: Code Veronica, returns

  • Lighting effects provide a new level of suspense in both harsh light and deepest shadow

Resident Evil 5 review

By voncarlsson posted 13th March

The game takes places Africa, the two special agents have been sent out to capture a criminal. Unforeseen stuff happen, and the two agents are now in a country swarming with zombies. Nothing special here, though I don't necessarily view it as a bad thing. I wish the plot was a bit more mature, but it suffices.

Now the first thing you'll run into, that might, turn you off a bit, is the extreme narrow FoV(Field of View). It's so narrow that I had to take a break from the game, because I felt so dizzy and nauseated. Luckily there is a fix, if you go to widescreengaming (google it), there's a hand program that you can download that will fix the FoV. But it's still a minus.

The second thing that annoyed me was the fact that weapons, that you'll find in random locations through out the game, will only be able to be picked up by one player. That, combined with the fact that ammo also only can be picked up by one player, means that you can't, in an efficient way, have the same type of weapons as you co-player. I feel that that is a major blow to co-op. Now it's not necessarily a don't-buy point, but it's a minor annoyance that easily accumulates into you and your buddy fighting over what weapons you want to use.

The third problem, is the extremely linear nature of this game. Now it's not necessarily a bad thing to be linear. But this game, doesn't even make a try at concealing it. It's immersion breaking.

And the last, but not least major annoyance that I had. Was the fact that there are too many cut scenes. I include the "interactive" ones as well. That are also annoying, they essentially require you to quickly tap keys in order to progress through the cut scene. It doesn't work very well on PC.

Otherwise it's an OK, co-op game. I'd say that if you can pick it up for less than USD $15, it's a worthwhile investment, with hours of decent game play. But don't bother if you don't got someone to play with. These types of games are best played in co-op.

Resident Evil 5 review

The quality of this game is solid, and Capcom should be proud of themselves for the performance this game achieves running on the DX10 pipeline. Call it the world of lowered standards but I for one welcome a DX10 title that steadily runs at over 60FPS.

Here is what my (probably most people's) gripe is:

This game cannot decide whether it wants to be a survival horror game or a zombie shoot em up game. This game can't help but to feel somewhat like an arcade adaption of Resident Evil-- The chapter system really removes the player from the game and reminds them that they're just blasting their way through a level.

Speaking of blasting, the game's control scheme plays poorly for mass-zombie shooter game. I couldn't help but to feel the game would have felt much more natural if they removed the 3rd person perspective all together. For the style of gameplay RE5 has to offer, not being able to move while aiming is unforgivable and a questionable design decision. Also, running and turning seemed very rough around the edges and could have used more tweaking for the PC. It should be noted I used KB&M as opposed to a gamepad of any kind.

Having to create a Games for Windows Live account in order to save local data is laughable-- that just seemed absurd to me, but I didn't mark the game down for it.

Directional audio is present and acceptable, but some of the zombie and weapon sounds come up a bit flat on a good sound system.

It doesn't live up to most RE titles but seems polished enough to be worth $15.

All in all, 3/5.

I'm very glad gamersgate had this game on sale! I've been waiting for this title since this title is already on PS3 and I've seen how nice it was made.

I'm a fan of Left-4-Dead series because of the "coop" theme. Well I'm a fan of all games that can be played on "coop" mode such as "Greed: Black Border", "Neverwinter Nights 2 and expansions" to name a few, so I'm really glad that "Resident Evil 5" is now geared on coop mode since it really feels more realistic.

Resident Evil 5 is more of like Left-4-Dead series because the missions, even on single player mode, you still have a companion controlled by AI which makes the game feels more comfortable and realistic since you feel secured that you have a companion to save you in case you made a mistake and you are in a pinch.

The graphics is superb specially since RE5 supports DirectX 10, but surprisingly, it isn't slow even on low spec PC.

They also maintained the original feel of the RE series; such as the way they presented the menu, the voice that says "resident evil... 5" when you press the start key etc.

I really recommend this game to all, may it be an RE fan or just about anyone. I gave it a 5 star rating as it really exceeded my expectations.

Happy gaming to all!
