Prince of Persia review

The game, like others have said, is not like the rest of the series; though it is fun to play. The controls are similar to Assassin's Creed, in that each key is for a different body part, but you're also a lot more limited. The game can get a repetitive and is cartoony, compared to the rest of the series. Overall though, it was entertaining and worth playing.

Not the usual PoP game

By AlexClockwork posted 19th November 2012

I would give just one warning to those about to buy this game: It is NOT a regular Prince of Persia game.

The movement is really fluid, but more simple than in the rest of the games, and the combat is completely based on combos. It has a beautiful art style, and a nice sandbox mechanic, letting you play at your own pace. The story and the ending are really captivating too, and I really enjoyed the whole game, but it's completely different than I'd have expected, and a lot of people will argue about the game deserving a PoP name (not because of the game being bad, but because of it being different).

An excellent reboot/spinoff of the Prince of Persia franchise. This time the prince comes back with some new moves thanks to a magic wielding companion and his own metal gauntlet, letting him grapple down walls and fly through the air. A lot has been said in other reviews about the lack of death in the game, and I personally am a fan. This game is supposed to be about the fun and challenge of acrobatic platforming, and death always gets in the way. Now with the princess having the magic to save the player, you get to spend more time with the meat of the game.

The graphics are absolutely beautiful. I first played the game on Xbox a couple of years ago, and picked it up for PC on sale last month. It's gorgeous on either platform, with vibrant colors and a story book art design that really pops. The audio is also pretty solid with my headphones on.

In short, buy this game if you enjoy big 3-d platforming, interesting graphics, or 3rd person action. It has all in spades.

I love the 3rd-person style game play. Very fluid motion, fluid animation, and gorgeous graphics. The soundtrack is pretty good. It's also kind of easy, but the challenge lies in using as little assistance as possible, not in being squashed by your enemies constantly. I like the flow, myself, but not everyone will.

I have always enjoyed the prince of persia games and although this is a great looking game I am disappointed that it has become so simplified. The gameplay is almost automatic as you run and jump your way through the levels pressing a button here and there. Alot of the skill that was required to play in the previous games is all but a memory. Whether you are wallruning, jumping from poles, ledges or slides or fighting everything just takes a simple button press to accomplish. You never feel that sense of accomplishment that previous games or similar style games provide. I used to enjoy completing a tough series of jumps to reach my goal, I felt excitement when defeating the enimies that surrounded me while using agile flips and precision timing to advance my way past them. In this game you just dont do that anymore and it takes alot away from it in the end.

If you have trouble playing games and completing them this is a game for you. You will never really be challenged to the point of frustration but you will also not feel the sense of accomplishment that you should when completing a game. I gave this game a 4 out of 5 despite this major flaw simply because the game is still fun and has incredible graphics and the addition of Elika as your constant companion was a great addition. Also the game allows you to choose different paths to reach the end. I enjoyed the story although it is quite average and doesnt really have any twists to speak of. The developers really needed to add in a difficulty setting for people who wanted more challenge. I will keep it in my collection and go through it again in the future just to experience the beautifully rendered world and levels even though it is quite repetitive and lacks any challenge. Its a "good" game but taking all the challenge out of it took the prince in the wrong direction....(thankfully PoP : Forgotten Sands fixed this problem)

After I finished Assassins Creed I was searching for something similar.. And that's what Prince of Persia is(but more linear and no open world).

The graphic style is really something else. I personally loved it. Great game.

This game, while not a traditional PoP game, deserves more credit than it has been given. The art style and story are its strong points, and although it is very easy, the game is enjoyable and fun to play through. Worth the buy.

Stunning graphics, refreshing dialogs and witty humor. All it takes for a game to be really enjoyable.

However, you can't actually die in this game which makes it really easy even for tourist players which are accustomed to only playing Solitaire.

If you are a die-hard fan of Prince of Persia you might not like the game because of all the changes compared to the previous (and latter) games but if you enjoy playing games set in the Arabian nights environments you'll enjoy it. Oh yeah... Using a fullHD resolution (1920x1080) with all details set on high is a real breath-taker in this game.

This Prince of Persia offering is a flawed gem. Distancing itself from the Sands of Time games, this reimagining of the franchise sees the Prince (now a wandering rogue) teaming up with the beautiful and mysterious sorceress Elika to purge the darkness from a fallen kingdom.

Featuring streamlined controls, simplified combat, free-roaming aspects and tons of light seeds to collect, fans of the previous games may be disappointed by the lack of gameplay, or frustrated by the way the game rescues you whenever you are close to death. Give the game a chance, however, and players will be greatly rewarded by the game's gorgeous visuals and engaging story - and it's hard not to smile at the way the Prince and Elika elegantly tumble their way through the world's crazy obstacles.

Great adventure game for those that are new to the Prince of Persia series or those that want a more casual play experience.

The graphics in the game look fantastic. Combat is not a focus of this game and you only engage a handful of enemies throughout the game and can't truly be defeated as you get saved by your companion and can continue the battle until you finally defeat your enemy.

The various environments look great and are reasonably varied although a slightly more free-flowing zone or multiple ways to tackle some of the jumping sequences would have added to the game.

This is a game that I think is good for those younger gamers (as evidenced by the MRSP rating of 12+) and also those that like more colorful worlds and not the dark and gritty type environments or actions.

PoP 2008 has a strange story, where it received a lot of hate from the gaming universe, but not exactly for any faults of its own.

I have this theory: Ubisoft thought that by strapping "Prince of Persia" on their newest platformer they would assure a large, eager fanbase right off the bat for it; a safety cushion for sales, if you will. After all, it was a game about a guy with a saracen sword who runs along walls, right? Prince of Persia fans would buy in no problem. Why wouldn't they?

But the plan backfired when fans went in expecting an actual, proper, full-fledged new Prince of Persia that followed the tradition of the series, and they found something completely different; so much so that it even takes some big steps back in areas where the series had been consistently moving forward from one chapter to the next.

That said, I think PoP 2008 is a good game. In fact, I think it's a great game.

The complaints you most likely saw all over the place were always the same, so we'll adress them one by one in a handy list format:

• "Meh, it's so easy it's no match for my 1337 g4m0r sk1lls" - I've been gaming for over 20 years; the only, rare ocassions when I don't beat a game is when I despise it so much I can't be bothered to do so; and I thought the difficulty level was on par with current standards. PoP 2008 is easy, but then I've been bitching about how easy games in general have became for no less than four or five years. With the honorable exception of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., F.E.A.R., and a few others, I find almost every game out there to be terribly easy, with some of them reaching levels so ridiculous as to have a "Nightmare" difficulty mode that I've beaten without seeing a single "Game Over" screen. PoP 2008 is easy, it's true, but it's not the piece of cake some people accuse it to be either.

• "ZOMG it's a kiddie-friendly piece of shit YOU CAN'T DIE!!!!!!!1111!!1" - This is the most frequent complaint and, unless behind those words there's some elaborated reasoning that escapes me, it's also the less thought-out, most blatantly stupid sentence to be echoed over and over in the history of the written word. Here's the thing: Elika, the female sidekick, is integrated into the gameplay so that, with the press of a button, you can summon her and her oh-so-magical powers of whatever to give you a little boost in a difficult jump or to lend a hand in combat. At some point during the pre-mating rituals between press, developers and public, someone at Ubisoft merrily explained that Elika would also jump into action by herself whenever the protagonist faced a certain death (like, say, a miscalculated jump), rescuing him at the last minute and thus making it effectively impossible to die. I bet the poor guy is wishing he kept his head stuck up his own ass because, boy, did that statement stir up the beehive.

After being very disappointed in the direction in which Warrior Within took the Prince of Persia franchise, this new release is a positive step in some ways, but a negative step in others. The game goes back to the more lighthearted tone seen in Sands of Time and to some extent in the earlier games, and the physical and verbal interactions between the Prince and Elika are a lot to watch - in particular, there's a lot more dialogue between the two than between the Prince and Farah in Sands of Time, though most of it is optional and can be triggered at your leisure. What brings the game down, however, is its extreme simplicity. The environment is much less deadly than in earlier games. There are no death traps here, and only a handful of points where any timing is required; it's not quite autopilot, but it's close. Combat is weak, as well - although it's visually quite impressive, it essentially boils down to quicktime events. Overall, the game is worth experiencing for the dialogue and characterization, but the gameplay leaves much to be desired.

this is the dullest game i have ever played. and considering ive been gaming since the 70s, thats saying something. the story is trite, cliche'd, and slow. so slow. in fact, the whole game is characterized by "slow"... slow, and EASY. easy puzzles, easy platforming, and easy combat. slow + easy = booooring. about the only thing this game has going for it is the graphics. it looks absolutely outstanding. but that isnt enough to make up for being a terrible game.

Good old fashion fun. I wasn't a fan of Sands of time, which is what everyone seemed to like, but I did love this game. The story was just fun, kinda like reading a good book(Disclaim:I don't read books). The story is really what drives this game forward, not the combat. In fact the combat gets old fast, but the story is interesting, and the character development really adds something to the game that most games miss. If you want a game that draws you in and makes you wonder whats going to happen next, then you should pick this game up.
