Pineapple Smash Crew review

A very fun arcade style shooter where you control a squad of four members as you complete missions on randomly generated ships which range from collecting artifacts to eliminating all lifeforms on board. You have guns, but also really powerful grenade type weapons which you get more of as you level up by collecting shards and completing missions. Very fun and addictive, great for short play sessions.

Pineapple Smash Crew is a fairly enjoyable shoot em up. I didn't encouter many technical issues with the game, one CTD.

The problem with the game lies with repetitiveness, as you advance to the harder ships you don't really feel your doing anything different. You move room to room shooting anything that moves until you reach your objective which is randomly chosen from 3 or 4 defaults.

All the ships feel similar and you simply don't feel like your progressing at all.

The gunplay is quite satisfying however and is fairly enjoyable, the grenades spice things up a little as well but I found myself not using them as much as the game wanted me too. They're simply not needed.

In my opinion the game is far too easy, even on hard levels I don't feel like i'm being challenged.

It's not bad for the price, yet the easy difficulty and lack of variety really limit this to what I think could have been a fairly decent title.

For such a price it would be sad not to try it!

Simple concept and fun all the way, add to that some very good music (if you feel nostalgic when listening to old 8bit and 16bit tunes), this is one of the best ways to kill time.

I don’t have criticism for the game as much as a wish list that comes as a result of me being a spoiled American gamer that feels like his two cents are worth splashing onto a review (I’m going hate myself for writing these items down as much as you will). First, I was hoping for a bit more customization in terms of my MERCs outside of being able to name them and the light leveling up they do. It’d be cool to be able to give them each a specific weapon load out, though I am aware that since they all shoot at the same stuff it wouldn’t really be much of a change outside of a different graphical effect (plus the grenades may lose a bit of the attention they deserve). Also, despite Rich Edwards already speaking on the point about multiplayer and the difficulty of including that with a one man team, it’d be cool to play this game with other people. Finally, I wish I could give my MERCs hair. I named one after me and I have hair, but their baldness does not make for an accurate portrayal of an Ethan themed MERC.

For a first attempt at a solo game, PSC is a brilliant game that is well-made and plays around with a previous concept by switching the primary roles of grenades and guns. However, the enjoyment of the top down shooting is quickly replaced with the boredom of familiarity – the XP progression and the new upgrades do little to stop the repetitious missions. The lack of any multiplayer component also inhibits the potential fun factor overall. Pineapple Smash Crew is a valiant effort, and an enjoyable game, but not something you are likely to keep returning to again and again.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my deep and engrossing tales about achieving one’s destiny and screwing princesses but games like Pineapple Smash Crew are the perfect combination of old school fun and innovation that make me remember (yes I’ll say it again) why I love playing video games.
