Out of the Park Baseball 12

Rating: 4.8 (4 votes cast)

Out of the Park Baseball ("OOTP") is the most sophisticated baseball simulation game on the market. The series has improved continuously since its inception in 1999, winning countless awards along the way, including multiple Sports Game of the Year awards. Now in its 12th incarnation, OOTP offers everything a baseball fan can ask for in a computer baseball game.
One of the strengths of OOTP is that it offers multiple ways to play the game. You can create your league and simply watch it evolve by simulating long periods of time. Maybe you want to act as a general manager and build your franchise via trades, contract negotiations, or through the first-year player draft. Or you can dive deep into managing and call the strategy for every pitch and at-bat from the dugout. And of course, you can tailor all of this to your individual style of play.

There are three different types of leagues you can play in OOTP:

  • Major League Opening Day Rosters - Each version of OOTP comes with a roster set featuring the current season's Major League rosters, including accurately rated real players from the majors right down to the rookie leagues! Take over your favorite baseball franchise and guide it to glory!
  • Historical Leagues - You can create your own historical league, based on any real-world season from 1871 through the most recently completed season, without having to purchase additional season disks! You can use historical leagues to "replay" seasons from history, or you can simulate them into the future, with real players entering the league automatically in the correct years. OOTP even automatically adds expansion teams at the appropriate teams. You can create your own alternate baseball history!
  • Fictional Leagues - OOTP gives you the ability to create your own fictional baseball universe. You choose the league setup, the rules, the schedule, and the desired statistical output. OOTP creates a brand new baseball universe which begs to be discovered. Want a 40-team league with 3 minor league levels in Canada? No problem! A small 8-team independent league with an age-limit located in South Dakota? No problem either. The possibilities are endless; the only limit is your imagination.

But it doesn't stop there! You can combine any of the modes to truly turn your baseball dreams into reality. For example, import the 1927 Yankees and 1969 Orioles into the 2010 Major League and see how The Babe does against Josh Beckett. Or set up a league with the greatest teams from the US and Japan, competing for the ultimate championship. Or import individual historical players into your current fictional league - how would Ty Cobb do in your fictional world? OOTP is truly remarkable when it comes to fulfilling your baseball fantasies.

I have played Baseball Mogul for years. I am amazed at the content of OOTP12. I am starting with the Seattle Pilots expansion year and seeing if I can create a Brewer dynasty. Then my next project will be to turn the Chicago Cubs into Grizzly Bears. Looking forward to years of fun. Course this mean I may not be buying many more games. Hmmmmmmmm. Sorry Gamers Gate :)

I love baseball and really enjoy the "management" part of games (rolling up characters, creating adventures, and being a GM). OOTP is great when it comes to baseball management. It has highly detailed finances and the interface (esp. drag-and-drop) when dealing with rosters, players, and reports is good, but can be a bit clunky and non-intuitive. However, it is better than other baseball sim games. It is great to have all seasons from 1871 included in the package and the ability to make minor leagues and independent leagues is great. It does seem a bit glitchy in parts (my version tends to get stuck when backing up), sometimes it doesn't handle changes to league structure well, and you can only expand your league with even numbers of teams (if you want to have an expansion draft). Save and back-up often and the minor annoyances won't be a problem.

I've played simulation BB games since the 1970's: the Coleco (sp?) spinner/card game, an old dice basic sim I found in a baseball reference book, the old Sports Illustrated short-lived dice/chart games, APBA in the mid-70's, eventually migrating to Strat-O-Matic, then as the PC games came to the fore-front, I tried Season-Ticket and Sports Mogul (both of which I enjoyed). I'd heard of OOTP a few years ago, but hadn't given it a try. Last year, the OOTPv11 was on sale, so I gave it a while. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The same with this version. The fine-tuning of the 'nuts-and-bolts' of a team and/or league strikes a special chord in me. Though this would be the definition of micro-managing in the real world, when you accept that this is NOT in fact the real world, that's when it grabs me most. Being a sabre-metric 'nut', there are enough details here to keep any stats freak happy. I'd highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys trying to 'turn a team around'.
