Neverwinter Nights 2: Mysteries of Westgate

Rating: 4.4 (108 votes cast)

The dark visions brought you to Westgate. The dark truth could keep you...

Welcome to the most infamous and corrupt city in the Forgotten Realms, the port metropolis of Westgate! Explore the secrets of this cutthroat capital of the Dragon Coast, where anything goes and everything has a price, and attempt to unveil its darkest mysteries before they consume you. Choose your allies wisely in this city of treachery, as you seek to encounter the rulers of Westgate's underworld, the deadly Night Masks.

Mysteries of Westgate is the first Adventure Pack for Neverwinter Nights 2, developed by Ossian Studios. This single-player Dungeons & Dragons® game comes with over 15 hours of non-linear gameplay, an epic story of horror and intrigue with multiple paths and endings, new creatures and tileset, as well as brand new music and voice-over. In this city-based adventure, players can explore 4 bustling districts of the city of Westgate: Harbor Loop, Market Triangle, Arena District, and subterranean Undergate.

Start the game with a level 8 character and battle against some truly epic and horrific foes to progress up to level 14. Recruit 3 new companions to travel with you, each with their own unique personalities and goals, and win or lose influence through your words and actions to ultimately decide their fates.

Mysteries of Westgate requires the original Neverwinter Nights 2 to play, but is also fully compatible with both the Mask of the Betrayer and Storm of Zehir expansion packs, allowing players to use the new classes, races, and other features from these games (expansions are not required to play Mysteries of Westgate).

Features
  • A 15+ hour campaign of high adventure with multiple paths and endings for players to choose from - an ideal role-playing experience!
  • Non-linear gameplay with plenty of sidequests to uncover and solve in different ways, including class-specific options.
  • Well balanced so that even the weaker player classes, like bards, will have a fun time.
  • 4 new creatures including the wererat and quelzarn.
  • A new Sewer tileset used to create the seedy underbelly of Westgate, with tunnels, vaulted ceilings, rusty pipes, deep pools, and bridges.
  • 25 minutes of hauntingly beautiful new music from composer David John.
  • Hundreds of lines of new, professional quality voice-over.

Premium Module for Neverwinter Nights 2

By Fred_DM posted 11th April

Mysteries of Westgate has had a troubled history. It was supposed to be the first of a series of downloadable premium modules for Neverwinter Nights 2. Instead, it was delayed for almost 2 years after having been finished because publisher Atari couldn't figure out the DRM to use. By the time it was finally released, the premium module program for NWN2 had been stopped, making Mysteries of Westgate the first and only such module available, next to the 2 official expansion packs.

Developer Ossian (not Obsidian!) have done a great job with this, though. Mysteries of Westgate offers an entirely new city to explore (seedy Westgate), new characters to team up with, and is fully voiced. It offers some of the best content available for Neverwinter Nights 2 and should not be missed.

This advanture pack came quite long after the original NW2 released. It fell short comparing to the previous expansion pack and main game. From the story to the quest, non of them really shined, but still, if you miss the advanture from NW2 after so long and also want some new stuff, here's at least 15 more hours for you.

Where's the mystery? This is WoTC D&D v.4. That's what it is. If you like D&D but have trouble getting people to play with you, then you can play with the computer. If you don't have trouble getting people to play with you, but all your friends are far away, you can use the computer as a virtual D&D board game. Either way, it's a win.

Tons of mods and user content for this one. A very good value at any price.

The average game time for this is at least 15 hours so this is kind of worth your money as there is a fair bit to although there is also quite alot of negativity I think with this expansion (but the soundtrack I really like so this upped the number of stars): -

- Story is lacking.

- Difficulty varies, some parts are really easy yet some parts you just get owned.

- Voice acting is kind of poor, not quality but quantity.

- Quest structure is kind of boring as mostly involve doing odd jobs for different characters.

- The improvements introduced to other expansions/main game aren't seen here.

Despite the negativity, the soundtrack, length and the setting around the expansion kind of makes up for it.

Mysteries of Westgate opens in the port city of Westgate, the Dragon Coast burg that's home to the Night Masks, a feared thieves' guild. You arrive at the docks to solve the mystery of a cursed mask that you found in a dungeon. The mask isn't a very cooperative item; it won't part from your company, and it gives you nightmares. As you delve into the adventure and the shadowy guild's operations, you're embroiled in a tale of vengeance and a dark, monstrous secret.
