GAME SUMMARY

Stalin vs. Martians

Rating: 3.3 (19 votes cast)

Stalin vs. Martians, as the name suggests, is a game both masterfully trashy and absolutely over-the-top. Fun and accessible, it takes a simple arcade-like approach to the genre of real-time strategy. The player controls the Red Army, as it defends Earth from the Martian Invasion of 1942, that highly classified military operation which even today remains a closely guarded state secret. Stalin himself conducts the mission briefings, and later even becomes a playable unit. The bold leader is duly serious, even as he faces the most ridiculous threat the world has ever known. The game itself is far from standard RTS fare: this is no realistic and deeply strategic war simulation, but a straightforward, fun and light-hearted arcade-style game – complete with power-ups falling from conquered foes in the form of bright shiny coins.

Features

  • Unique concept and design.
  • Fast-paced and lighthearted arcade-style real-time strategy, with power-ups, coin-collection and speedy reinforcements.
  • Accessible and fun, well suited even for people who don’t normally play strategy games.
  • A single-player campaign of 12 missions.
  • Incredible Russian soundtrack and wild music-video intermissions.

This game had an intriguing concept and presentation. Unfortunately, it was abandoned shortly after release and has been relegated to the dusty shelves of video game history.

Stalin vs Martians only lived with its humor. Everything else sucked, to be honest. It lacked Attack-Move command while Martian armies are usually fast and deadly(think of a Pikmin-looking infantry destroying T-34 squads), also there are no Multiplayer as well. It can be the worst game of the year if you're looking only at the game itself, but it's humor and stuffs still make it up for something interesting.

From josephsmits, "Overall, what Stalin vs. Martians has going for it is its whacky premise and execution of said whacky premise. But, that doesn’t quite make up for the learning curve for newbies and the difficulty of the game itself even in the very early levels (though this may be due to my own skill, who knows?). If you’re looking for a game that will both amuse and frustrate/challenge you, I’d say pick up Stalin vs. Martians. Although, I’d be ready to face that aforementioned challenge early and often, let’s hope you make it further than I did."

If you saw the trailer, and thought "WOW! I gotta get this.” don't be mistaken. The game isn't nearly that fun and the fact that the promotional videos gave the game a really high expectation, just makes it worse. The game is VERY laggy and the AI was the dumbest I've seen for a while. In fact, the game has almost no strategy in it; the battles depend on two things and two things only: number of units and firepower. Even so, the game does have its charms. Its light-hearted Russian story will at least make you chuckle once or twice and controlling a 50ft tall Stalin near the end of the game is down-right hilarious! Over 50% of the units in this game are Tanks and plowing through the enemy forces with a massive army of them is refreshing. The game doesn't really have an objective rather than "kill all the enemies in this area" but they trick you into thinking you have a variety of mission types, and that could be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it.

Overall, Stalin vs. Martians will disappoint those who have been waiting anxiously to get it, it’s no Starcraft killer. The game had some really awesome possibilities (how cool would it be if you could play as the aliens?), but they just got left out (no multiplayer?). But the game has some interesting gimmicks worth looking into and at $15 you're not at much lost if you don't like it. If you decide to buy it, at worst this will be a time-killer for Starcraft 2.

Warning: This game is incredibly bad. Looks like 10 years old. No details, no graphic options, worst performance I've seen in a long time.

Great soundtrack and great promotional videos, but absolutely nothing behind it.

Lots of propaganda - but no game.
