Multiwinia: Survival of the Flattest

Rating: 4.1 (26 votes cast)

“Long ago a computer scientist called Dr Sepulveda created a beautiful digital world existing entirely within a computer network of his own invention. This world was called Darwinia and it was inhabited by a peaceful, law-abiding digital life-form called the Darwinians.

As the years wore on however the Darwinians became ever more aggressive and autonomous. They divided into factions, squabbling over Darwinia’s limited natural resources. Tribes began to roam the fractal voids hell bent on each other’s destruction, drunk on power and unswerving in the pursuit of world supremacy.

Far and wide, they became known as the Multiwinians…”

An absolute blast of a game! I dwelved into the demo of Multiwinia and its predecessor 'Darwinia', but at the time the first game (single player -focused) left me in doubt. Latter with Multiwinia (multiplayer oriented, but with 'offline' conponent too) was a little better, especialy with the controls. The controls are essentially WASD + Mouse to navigate the 3D world of the game - a game that is a Real Time Strategy game (RTS) and not an FPS. The controls are not a problem and you can adapt to them in about 10min of play, wich is incidentaly, the usual time matches can last.

That's right: this is a stripped down action oriented minimalist-looking RTS of fun, to play on fast romps of 10 or so minutes, or more if you configure the game. While it won't steal any RTS award out there - it should. It is simple in formula, and last only for as long as your mood, but its a stellar little game I can only recommend! :) Problably the best from Introversion.

I'm conflicted about rating this one, because the engine that drives it was dropped in Windows - it's simply not possible to play the game without virtualization if you're running a current version. That said, I love the indie 2d-in-a-3d-world graphics and comical audio effects. This game, like its predecessor, is just plain FUN and you don't have to sit for hours to feel satisfied.

Amazing little game for the price. I have not tried online Mutiplayer yet, however the rest of the game is superb. The best aspect is the fact you know exactly how long games will be. For people like me that sometimes only have 10 minutes here or 15 minutes there to spend on gaming, this game is from the heavens.

I feel that this game deserves a review. I had seen it on Gamers Gate a while ago but gave it a miss. After reading some reviews online i decided to give it a go. It is an excellent game. Great for those who need those quick strategy fixes or even a long drawn out battle! Its simple and fun and the best part about it is the online play. Sending your army of 2-d Multiwinians agaisnt human foes is alot of fun.. Its very good value for money in my eyes and would encourage you to get it and after playing singleplayer for a but join the online battle!

Five stars
