GAME SUMMARY

Men of War: Assault Squad

Rating: 4.4 (196 votes cast)

Men of War: Assault Squad is a sequel to the critically acclaimed real-time tactics game Men of War. This stand-alone expansion features a completely new cooperative skirmish game mode with access to five different nations (Russia, Germany, USA, Commonwealth and – for the first time ever in the Men of War series – Japan) as well as increased realism and accessibility.

Like previous games in the series, Men of War: Assault Squad includes the unique “direct control” feature which enables players to maneuver units using the WASD controls, rather than pointing and clicking. PC Generals can get behind the controls of a tank to smash through obstacles, crush soldiers under its tracks and fire armor-piercing shells at enemy emplacements, or take control of individual soldiers as they fight.

Key features

  • Different historical settings and battlegrounds for every nation will ensure that each time players will face a different variety of enemies and tactics.
  • Unique hero units for every nation with powerful abilities such as increasing units’ firepower, boosting morale or providing other advantages to defeat the enemy against all odds.

  • Improved and dynamic AI ensures that no two games will play out the same way, making each battle a new experience against an AI that really fights back.

Men of War: Assault Squad review

Assault Squad offers quite a lot of new content for an expansion, even a stand-alone. So there's a lot to like, if you're into tactical battles and micro-managing units. The gameplay feels something like a cross between Close Combat, Commandos and Company of Heros. But its complexity, and the sometimes awkward interface, will make it hard to get into for most mainstream RTS players - and even a few hard core fans. If you have the time and the patience then Men of War: Assault Squad can be a rewarding experience. As far as appropriateness, it's better than some but still a violent game about a violent time. Ultimately what you have to decide is if this battle is one worth fighting.

A fantastic game to play with friends. It's pretty much a multiplayer only game, with some skirmish scenarios in case you want to play CO-OP, community is also pretty active, but having a friend to play with will be much more enjoyable

A mix of depth and perspective. The buildings are torn, wreckage litters the battlefield, bodies scattered across the terrain. As the battle rages on, the scars of battle last. Although the bodies and wrecks eventually fade, this game plays very well at the simulation aspect of a battle. Each soldier(which bears their own name) can be amazingly effective, cutting down enemies from behind, throwing AT grenades to disable and kill enemy tanks and emplacement and yet they will still die in but a few bullets, a hail of gunfire, or a wayward mortar. You can even take control of a unit to control it's aim, *using a tank to shoot through walls, or blow up obstacles for instance* movement and behavior more precisely. It is such facts that help to emphasize that it's not the "super unit" you built that won you the game, but how you use it. I could example my review with imagery from my experience with the game, but it pails in comparison to what is possible. Much of the game does feel realistic, although there are a few concessions made for gameplay, it retains it's integrity. With an fixed income system, and very little static building/emplacement, I'd hesitate to call MoW:AS a RTS, but ignoring it on that basis, you might miss the depth it holds as a tactical game. A word of caution though, there is a learning curve to this game, many buttons to perform all sorts of tasks *not even getting into tank armor/penetration hierarchy* from cooking grenades to going prone in a crater from an earlier explosion.

Although it is designed for multiplayer, Men of War:Assault Squad provides approaches for each of the included factions to campaigns(4 missions which can be played at varying difficulties for each faction) in WWII which can be enjoyed alone, as well as with friends. No previous Men of War game necessary, if you want a tactical, in-depth, game to play, perhaps check out some videos and give Men of War: Assault Squad a try?

Men of War: Assault Squad is a very realism based rts set in the second world war, unlike other games in this perticular genre your units do not last very long against bullets, artillery amongst other things. This makes it very fun for me, since i am a bit of a history fanatic it is a very good RTS game, atleast if you are into such games.

I never played Men of War until I purchased it a couple days ago. It is a new experience from the typical build a base and destroy a hq, and it is a nice change, but I think it would be more fun if the AI's were not only in skirmish mode but also the other modes online simply because you have more options and a good time to just team up with a friend and beat a AI into submission

I never played any of the other men of war games prior to playing men of war: assault squad but i can truly say this is a well put together game. The detail and realism incorporated into the game creates a variety of strategies that can be used to conquer the opposition. Including several faction and an interesting direct control ability the game features a multitude of units to be selected from. However, the advisers accent for almost each faction could be improved upon greatly. If you are an RTS fan, I would recommend this game due to the realism and creative gameplay.

Men Of War Assault Squad is Developed by Digitalmindsoft and published by 1C Company the game is focussed around Real Time Strategy.

Men Of War Assault Squad is a very deep and complicated strategy game that will be no good to the gamer that is new to the series, the player will either find this game too complicated or for the real time fan will be a dream come true.

Assault squad takes what was and still less than a couple of years old the lovely intricate World War II era, with some very well thought of graphical and technical detail that has been polished off. As with any other Real Time Strategy game the gamer will control the standard infantrymen, along with he trucks, tanks, airstrikes and so on. What sets this game apart from the rest is the startling depth of the game, all the scenarios are destructible and the way you can carry out your mission is very alarming, you will have to seriously manage all your units if you plan on staying alive for more than five minutes.

Each and every soldier in your infantry can become extremely powerful, you will be able to pick up weapons from your fallen enemies, and also you can siphon fuel from damaged vehicles. Each of your soldiers can become much more powerful than what the game originally started you off with, this in return can run in your favour, even in the hardest of missions you come up against, with a bit of quick thinking and createtivity you will be able to salvage the situation and over run your enemies.

As an example, imagine your small army of infantry men and turret trucks has just been crippled by your enemies who have been well placed for their benefit against you, the mission has only left you with a handful of soldiers, you decide to drop back a good distance from your enemy, allowing you to send one soldier to man a machine gun which is nearby. He will than cover your remaining squad as two of the other infantrymen can proceed to nearby fallen enemies to loot their bodies for any grenades, the other infantryman can then be sent to fix a tractor which is nearby, you are lucky enough to have airstrikes on your side to destroy the enemies long range weapons. After a few minutes you can then instruct your men to attach the machine gun to the tractor and plan your next attack. This little scenario is only one of hundreds that are possible for you to do, The game shows you what Men Of War is really about, not just planning a single attack, but actually thinking logically about the other scenarios you can do to play at your advantage for each individual map.

How much of the battlefield you control also influences your own combat abilities: The more checkpoints that are waving your nation's flag, the more quickly you generate points, which you can use to purchase reinforcements. Breaking through a defence line will often unlock a special unit or ability, as well. These differ per faction, and can often be decisive in the final push. The Germans, for example, gain access to the Goliath, a small, remote-controlled tank that can infiltrate into enemy territory and cause a huge explosion upon detonation. The Americans unlock naval or air support, which allows you to take out enemy installations or units from a great distance. My personal favourite, however, is the Russian 'For the Motherland' ability. This will spawn a huge amount of AI-controlled soldiers that will attack wherever you want them to, leaving a trail of death, chaos and destruction in their wake.

While forcing your way through the enemy defence line by just throwing tons of units at it can certainly be an option at times, it's the small squad-based combat where this game really stands out. Each unit usually has a rich inventory that you would rather expect in a first person shooter. Soldiers possess various grenade types, weapons and items, and are even able to switch between fire modes. Better yet, you can take full control of one of your units with the press of a button, allowing you to get your squad out of sticky situations, or to carry out daring one-man attacks on enemies.

The single-player mode (skirmish) seems to me as if it was thought about at a later date, even though the scenes and also most of the units do actually change in each mission, but the games objectives and layout of some of the maps can be basically identical to each other. You will begin with a small force of infantrymen and work your way through your map completing the allocated objectives that have been given to you over and over again, getting quite repetitive at times. When playing in co-op mode, you can have up to three friends playing along with you, but after a short amount of time you and your friends will find this a bit dull and boring.

Multiplayer mode is where the true focus of this game comes out, There is a load of maps available, all depending on the mode you decide to choose, although online mode can be extremely difficult to the newcomer, The lobbies are not as populated as was hoped to be, and allot of the gamers inside this are well up to date with the game, This will mean you will have to get some friends together and cross your fingers if you intend to find a match against similar skilled opponents, The Men At War community is a very good source of knowledge, so you may very well get up to speed quickly by browsing through the forums there.

The graphics on the game are lovely, and all the scenarios are well thought up with almost everything being destructible, controls however can be very tricky, this will take the newcomer a good while to adjust to it, once you have managed to master the controls the game play is amazing and will keep the gamer glued to their pc’s for hours on end.

Overall score 8.5

Men of War: Assault Squad review

By Phazon posted 29th Jul 2011

If you enjoyed the original Men of War, you will enjoy this. Instead of a campaign this time around, Assault Squad focuses on introducing a new skirmish mode which can be played in single-player as well as online with friends. In a nutshell Men of War is a very realistic strategy game in that it simulates everything down to ballistic trajectory of bullets, how many rounds a man is carrying and how much armor a certain gun will penetrate. It has a bit of a learning curve but its deep gameplay keeps you coming back for more.

The new skirmish mode puts you in historically themed battles where you assault and capture points. These points are lightly defended at first by small infantry groups but the further you venture into the enemy's territory the harder the resistance becomes. The enemy will send waves of infantry, vehicles and tanks at you. They will also counter-attack in response when they lose key areas on the map as well.

With each point that you capture you are rewarded with a new unit or power that you can call-in. This helps the player from being overwhelmed with choices at the start of the game and helps focus their unit selection on what is needed at hand, as you will always have the right units available to deal with what gets thrown at you. The skirmish levels are quite challenging and it is recommended that new players start on the easy difficulty setting as this limits what the AI can call-in as reinforcements.

The multiplayer has also been overhauled with many balance changes to all aspects of the game. Digitalmindsoft has also been improving the game since launch with free patches that have included new models and textures for some of the older units in the game reused from previous titles in the series.

Must buy for any strategy game fan, especially if you have a WW2 interest. Many different units for USA, UK, Germany, Soviet Union and Japanese Empire are included.

Nice successor to the previous games of the series. I enjoy the improved multiplayer code (less lag) and there's more maps and nicer vehicles.

I do miss a campaign though.

Great game, good follow up to the original Men of War. Offers a new Skirmish mode for Co-OP play, and gives a non-linear way to complete single player missions (ability to choose your own reinforcements).

Worth the buy, great online community, good game play and good AI, with lots of replayability.

8/10 !

Men of War: Assault Squad review

This game is amazing! Personaly I think this trumps all other RTS games because this is focused on HOW you use your units, not how many you can build.

In this game compared to normal Men of War, they added better AI, Skirmish mode, more ammo, slightly better graphics, and Hero units which are unique in there own ways.

For instance a normal sniper in the game takes roughly 3 seconds to get a aimed shot at a enemy soldier a far distance away. The veteran sniper can do the same in half a second.

The game still has its same realism, people still die to few bullets, tanks have different components and its just so much fun.

There is 5 factions and now the game is more balanced between them, so dont worry about that.

Overall I recomend this to all RTS fans that love micro instead of macro.

An AMAZING addition to the series!

The gameplay is faster with a far greater difference between factions. There's a lot less of the late-game artillery spam that online games often devolve into, along with some general balancing changes.

The skirmish missions are great fun online, and the AI actually presents a real challenge (Believe me, they WILL counter attack!).

It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it replaces the tire and gives it a nice chrome finish. More of the Men of War action that you love, but with some great changes.

After playing this version of the game in the open beta, it was easy to see that this one would be the best one yet. When it comes to multiplayer that is.

Assault Squad now contains something called Skirmishes, which are coop maps that can be played against the AI. Two players (up to I believe eight) can duke it out against the AI across several maps, capturing points that then allow you to buy new units (infantry and vehicles). Lots of fun and quite challenging even at the easiest setting. Planning and good coordination among the players will be required to get to the last capture point and capture it.

When it comes to the versus bit of the multiplayer, there are a few changes compared to the original Men of War. All for the better in my opinion. Machine guns, can really tear up a squad of soldiers if they are out in the open in a matter of seconds. Less heavy tanks are now seen during games (Tigers, King Tigers, etc) due to them now being "hero" units. This is to prevent the spamming of such vehicles as seen in the original game.

Cant say much about the single player since that was not available when I was testing the game in the beta, but it will probably be more of the same. Multiplayer is where this game really shines, especially with the new Skirmish mode.

Recommended.
