Midnight Nowhere review

By Exploding-Bob posted 24th January 2011

First: If you are easily offended by explicit content gross actions and incorrect humor, stay away from that game!

The Flaws:

Midnight Nowhere neither has stunning 3D Graphics nor much remarkable good animation. They to the job yes and atmosphere they create very well but most of it looks rather static.

Finding you way around can be a drag, as one room consists of several screens and for some part your adventure seems to be finding all the corners within those rooms. You can easily miss some spots and miss some clues as consequence. Fortunately navigating itself works flawless. You never get stuck somewhere or similar things.

Character animation is also an issue. Because at first he needs to turn and reposition himself before he can actually go somewhere. Though the separate movement animations look and sound quite naturally the sequence as a whole does not.

The locations are a bit limited. Hospital, Police Station and H-Block. Thatīs it.

Puzzles, well I have seen better. Letīs say - not only "The police are bending over backwards" to find the murderer, your mind does also.

And finally ...well how to put it without spoiling...

If you played some Russian developed games before

you learned that the endings follow a certain pattern - like a kind of trademark. And though I like it, it becomes a bit predictable over time.

So whatīs the good thing about it?

The voice over is great! Itīs something you wonīt expect in such a way in such a game. With a real narrative quality.

Then there is the atmosphere, the building suspense is orchestrated really well.

The humour ranges from sick to gross and is really something you rarely find anywhere else.

For me, I totally dig such stuff and like to quote Oddworld Inhabitants on Abeīs Oddysee an that topic:

"if your idea of īcuteī is long spikes driving through your head, this is your Game"

...You get the picture.

And finally the Story which is really good, with the turns and twists needed to make it quite remarkable.

So if you have an affinity to Trash (Movies and Games) give it a try. That quality pushes the game past the 3 Stars mark.
