Majesty 2: Kingdom Sim

By CBX posted 28th Jul 2011

I haven't played Majesty 1, so when I heard about this game I was floored. It sounded too awesome. You're actually the quest giving NPC and the NPC merchant.

This is a different approach from the Real Time Strategy (RTS) where you manage resources, produce units and storm the enemies.

In Majesty 2, you cannot control the monster slaying units. Like mentioned before, YOU are the quest giver, and the computer takes the role of the adventuring party or solo heroes, killing for YOUR gold. The cheery Sean Connery-advisor explained that to me, while calling me "your Majesty". Sweet.

The quest interface is quite easy. You simply put out flags on the map and set a large enough gold price. Then the adventurers try to reach your flag to cash in your reward, killing everything in their way. When they kill, they earn experience points and can level up to be stronger, just like your general RPG. You can assist said heroes with buffs and healing, but every use cost money. There are tons of gold sinks in this game, so beware.

But you can earn back some of the gold you put on rewards by producing items in your town and sell to the adventurers. This is a careful balance of putting out an attractive enough quest reward and saving enough to upgrade and expand your city. Otherwise, despite the independent NPCs, this feels like a regular strategy game, where you collect resources, construct buildings and upgrade technology.

One of the difficulties I encountered was to make the adventurers react to immediate threats. Fortunate the game implements your own city guard, who is always vigilant and defend the home base. So if you're familiar with RTS-games before, you might be a little annoyed trying to readjust to the lack of control you actually have over your units. Newcomers to the genre wont have that obstacle gnawing in their head.

Pros:

+ NEW TAKE ON THE GENRE. My love for RPG and RTS gets a taste of the NPC life.

+ CHALLENGING MISSIONS. Holy crap! Some of them might be too hard for newbies, but simply try again.

+ GOOD TUTORIAL. Many games usually don't put much effort in their tutorials, but this is one of the ones that's introduce you to the game mechanics effortless.

Cons:

- NOT THE SMARTEST AI. Adventurers are dumb.

- LIMITED QUEST EDITING. You could only place flag A, assign quest type B, assign cost C, and then wait. I would love to write "Bring me 20 bear asses" and watch them slay bears.

- HERO BUILDINGS. It may be just me but it feels odd to build an archery range (which cost) and then "produce" a hero unit (which cost) that won't work at all if you don't pay up a hefty reward (which cost). They're don't really have a "grinding" play style.

As a fan of the original Majesty, I was initially disappointed with this game. Despite superficial similarities, Majesty 2 provides a very different gameplay experience. M2 is overall more challenging, with less of the fun, whimsical spirit of the first game. Taken on its own terms, M2 is a satisfying real-time strategy game that successfully reduces micromanagement without compromising strategic and tactical depth.

The economy is overhauled from Majesty, with an increased emphasis on establishing and defending trading posts. Temples and trading posts can only be built in predetermined locations. Unit A.I. is often frustrating, and doesn't convey distinct hero personality types the way Majesty did so effectively. Strategy is dictated by map layout to a much greater extent than in Majesty: gameplay focuses on figuring out the correct way to defeat maps, rather than creatively exploring different ways to defeat maps as in the original majesty.

With the release of the three expansion packs - in particular the excellent Monster Kingdom - Majesty 2 improved greatly and fulfilled its potential as a worthy successor to the original Majesty. I recommend avoiding this release and instead purchasing Majesty 2 Collection, which bundles Majesty 2 with the three M2 expansions plus all downloadable content.

Very different from its predecessor

I really enjoyed the original Majesty game, which was a very unique engine for a strategy title. When I purchased this I expected it to be very similar to the original, and I was surprised when it was not. You still have only indirect control of your units, but the mechanics for producing different units (especially the powerful religious ones) are very changed, which really alters the gameplay. At first I felt this was a bad change, but over time I came to the conclusion that it was in fact very fun, and I am glad that this is not a simple reproduction of an old game.

RTS with dose of humour. In normal game You have solders going blind your orders. In Majesty 2 your people are greedy - if you want to send them to battle, need to PAY for that or make a reward. No money - no obey. Rest is very typical for this kind of game - find and eliminte enemies, raise nuilding, etc. For fans of this genre and casual commanders ;)

Majesty 2 does not live up to the original majesty in my opinion, sure the ai system is more advanced, and the graphics are nicer, but what made majesty, majesty just isnt there anymore, the heroes dont have a life anymore, all they do is bounty hunt, stay at home, collect loot, but thats all they do, in majesty 1 one of the infuriating yet appealing parts of it are the rangers, they would sometimes leave your lands in search for adventure where they may or may not return, that little bit shows you that they had a life, that they did things, but they removed little quirks like that, and the gnomes,(the underpowered midgets though they are fun to have) the gameplay isnt the same, majesty 2 is much harder, it starts off with an easy tutorial and a few easy missions after that, and then you get hit with the advanced missions, and soon after you get hit with bosses and monsters that can either destroy your buildings and kill your heroes in just a few hits, and there is little variety of monsters, and most monsters are slightly altered overpowered versions of the other monsters, like the manbear is to the bear. and the game gets repetitive quickly, you basically do the same things over and over again, build an army of heroes, build a town, go slay this boss monster or that building or series of buildings, nothing new or creative like in the original majesty, this game is just a shadow of majesty meant for the hard core game, the multi player compatibility still needs some tweaks, but there are a few pluses to majesty 2, id your looking for a challenge this is a good game, the graphics are good, and i like the idea of the in game shop, thats it for my review for now,in conclusion this game is ok, but mainly for experienced gamers, you might like it more if you havent played the original majesty and thats that

Challenging and I am still struggling to complete it.

One of the most fulfilling and enjoying single player games I've played.

Don't expect much from multiplayer perspective though

After reading a couple of reviews I decided to buy the game since it was on sale. I am glad I did. The concept for the game is great! I've tried other RTS games and but I don't enjoy them because you have to multitask a lot. With this game the heroes have a mind of their own, so you don't have to frantically monitor each fight to heal your heroes or to make them use their special abilities. That makes the game more relaxed and enjoyable. I would definitely recommend this game. Even if you are not able to buy the game when its on sale it is definitely worth the money.

By unsane_one posted 14th Jan 2011

Honestly, if you've never played the original Majesty you owe it to yourself to buy it first--it's a fantastic game that's unlike everything else out there. Majesty 2, while still a good game, isn't as good as the first. Heroes tend to get killed easier, the build order is a bit more straightforward and there are lot more "cheap" missions where, until you know what's coming, it's almost impossible to prepare for. If you already love the original Majesty this one is definitely worth playing.

I loved the original Majesty and this game brings back so many memories. It's a great buy and you would have no regrets if you enjoy this type of game. It's not quite RTS and you can only influence them to do what you want, which I find highly addicting.

The RPG elements are also wonderful.

Very neat little game with a unique premise (well, if you haven't played Majesty 1 that is). It suffers mainly from two things:

1. Heroes are not as independent as in the original which kind of counteracts the game's intent.

2. The difficulty is way too high and often frustrating. There simply is no case to be made for the lack of difficulty setting. A game with easy mechanics shouldn't just be for experts, but also enjoyable for casual gamers. I am rather hardcore, but it is too difficult for me.

Other than that it is a fantastic game.

The sequel to the great Majesty seems to me only an update to the original game. Most of the gameplay remains the same, but with enhanced graphics. the original game was somewhat original as there was not much control on your heroes as opposite to many strategy games. However, the second part does not innovate much. If you have the first game, play it nd only if you are disappointed with the graphics, go for the sequel. On the other hand, if you did not try the first game, go directly for this one. It is also worth noting that the game is pretty difficult.

I've been a fan of Majesty for almost a decade. Majesty 2 is a great enhancement over the original majesty, given the heavy investment in graphics and gameplay. The story mode is much better, since you practically follow a single story line from beginning until the end of the campaign which much better than the mission mode of Majesty. The same mission can be repeated many times and each time with different strategy which makes the game pretty much addictive.

The game misses a feature to save your profile after uninstalling the game, however it would be fun to redo all the missions.

Make sure to get the expansion packs and get the free purchases within the in game shop.

By lordlucless posted 19th Aug 2010

Majesty 2 is a reasonable game, but misses out on the originality and flair of the original.

Firstly, ensure you patch the game as soon as you install it - it shipped with bugs that made it near unplayable on some systems without the patch.

Majesty 2 has been rendered in 3D, where I think it is a game that really works better in 2. The hero models, while nice when zoomed in, appear generic, and hard to distinguish while zoomed out, and zoomed out is where you want to be while actually playing the game.

The humour is a bit more over-stated and in your face, and the heroes seem more stereotyped and less idiosyncratic.

Nevertheless, there were some mechanical advances - having a summary of all heroes health easily visible, the Party feature for grouping heroes, and a Defend flag were all welcome additions. It's a pity they couldn't have incorporated these while keeping the spirit of the first game.

This is a great sequel to the original, which I have had for years... I was tickled pink to find this game on here and for a good price...(I picked it up on sale.)

Majesty 2 does have a few problems, however. It is a tad inconsistent on difficulty, and the campaign feels a bit railroaded -- that is, a little too confined. I wished they had random maps for non-campaign play too, but you need to pick up the expansion for some of that.

If you are a fan of the original Majesty, though, be assured this game is truly a loyal sequel. Just hearing the great commentary the little heroes say as they run around the map is great.

It's a great game that, like the original, takes the dungeon-crawling adventurer genre and turns it on its ear by making you the person who sends all those crazy little suicidal heroes out on quests.

Majesty 2 is a good game with an interesting indirect control system of motivating your heroes through bounties, but it does not live up to Majesty 1. The heroes lack the personality of the first game and no longer have a life outside of shopping and bounty hunting. Nearly all of the expert missions are centered around killing a boss enemy, so it lacks the variety in mission objectives of the original game. Although a lair randomizer was added in the latest patch before the expansion it does not even come close to living up to the sandbox mode of Majesty Gold. If you already own Majesty Gold and want similar gameplay Majesty 2 is worth buying, but be aware that it lacks the longevity of the original.

By EvilSanta posted 29th Jul 2010

Is it Majesty 1? No? Is it bad? Nope. It's more MP friendly with significantly less SP replayability. Heroes need more baby-sitting in form of flags and have little desire to venture in the big world themselves. However, new flag types a golden, the defend flag is a god-send when you want to build your trade posts.

The humour is still there. If you were a fan of Majesty 1 like yours truly, you might be somewhat disappointed. However, you are also likely to appreciate some of the new additions to the game. In sum, nothing spectacular, nothing awful.

I got this game because I enjoyed Majesty 1, but I soon was disappointed. The heroes are too generic and can easily die with just a short notification. This is also true for monsters that can destroy your buildings with little notice when you are busy focusing on something else. Very annoying. Although heroes respond to flags much more quickly than in Majesty 1, unfortunately when you place an attack flag all your heroes go to it and none stay in your city to help fend off beasts. So, once again, you can have your city ravaged by beasts in no time when you are busy trying to finishing quests. Couple this with incredibly strong Bosses that can kill in one hit, and you have to replay the missions many times until you can by eventually kill the boss. Very frustrating. Overall, I would not recommend playing it unless you are a real fun of the series.

Majesty 2 is a very interesting game as you indirectly control your heroes via flags of payments. You can pay for example 400 gold to anyone who kills a certain creature, but you cannot force anyone to kill it. Its great fun, but there are two major flaws.

1. There is no sandboxmode (the last patch has got a new mapeditor though).

2. The game can become a bit repetitive.

Still its good fun, and I recommend to buy it when its on sale (I got it at 75% off)

By mozen posted 18th Jan 2010

Being a long time fan of Majesty 1 and Gold, I really enjoyed Majesty 2 at the start, but slowly became dissapointed.

The AI is so much more enhanced and the humour is great, the environment is nicely built and the monsters are improved. Also, the interface is easier to use and in campaign mode you are allowed the ability of using relics which give periodic advantages and heroes can always be revived, regardless of whether you have a spell to do so or not.

On a lesser note, all the heroes look basically the same when running around as do their attacks and the buildings are all blue, there’s not the distinctive look of everything as with the original. Instead of pulling off a unique looking game, it just blends in with all the other strategy games.

Furthermore, when a hero dies, there is only sometimes a notification, and to revive a hero without a spell can cost you thousands of dollars (with a spell is hard enough when your hero list keeps bouncing around), which takes a while to build up (as heroes become higher in level, they cost more. Ex. One of my heroes cost $16,000 to revive...hated when she died). Also, the monsters can kill any of your buildings in only a few seconds and there is no notification, so if you're focusing on another part of the map, half your city could have been destroyed by one monster and you would have no idea. And heroes don't protect their homes or the palace as in Majesty 1, and they don't really hunt or explore either.

Heroes do however respond to flags much more quickly, which is the primal way of completing any mission, unfortunately when you place an attack flag somewhere, all your heroes go to it and none stay in your city to help fend off beasts. Also, in campaign mode, the 'boss'es have HPs of 50,000+ and can kill all your heroes/any structure in one hit, so you have to frustratingly replay the missions so many times until you can by chance kill the boss.

There is also a handy new interface button that lets you play from .2x to 5x faster than normal speed, although you end up playing the entire game at 5x because 1x ends up to be extremely slow.

Things that they left out in Majesty 2: fairgrounds, temples to Lunord, gambling halls and Elven lounges, royal gardens, less variety in monsters, less spells (you can’t tell whether the spells that are given even work or not) and the worst part that they left out is that THERE ARE NO GNOMES! The highlight of Majesty 1!

Overall, I would recommend playing it only for interest’s sake, but watch out, once you beat all the missions, it gets boring really fast.

As a fan of the original Majesty, I really enjoyed Majesty 2. Though the sequel offers many advancements over it's predecessor, such as a much more polished AI system and a fully 3d environment, I find it slightly unweildy, I definately miss the custom games, and most of all the gnomes.

This game holds true to the original in so many ways - Paradox have kept the essential combination of humour, strategy, fantasy and RPG well balanced, in a game which looks great and plays smoothly! While frustrating at times (as the original was!) Majesty 2 is a great play, and does require some thinking. Any fans of the original series who do not have this game would do well to purchase it now! And anyone who likes an entertaining and varied game, smoothly combining many different elements in a way unseen elsewhere, do give it a go!

Considering I have not played Majesty 1, I still found Majesty 2 to be a different, fun and interesting game. Majesty 2 attempts to blend the simulation and RTS genres together, where RTS comes out a bit stronger. On occasion, a fine element of micromanagement can mean a huge difference - for example, by healing a hero and saving yourself from any resurrect costs. Luckily, Maj2 comes with some nice time control features, allowing you to slow down or speed up the game to your liking, as well as pausing.

The graphics and music in Maj2 are very appealing. The music is somewhat generic enough but catchy and fitting enough to be missed. Somewhat cartoony with an impressive physics engine makes the graphics definitely fun to see; buildings fall apart bit-by-bit and characters and monsters fly around when hit by a fireball or massive club.

The gameplay itself revolves around careful placement and selection of buildings, skills, research and heroes and the placement of 4 different types of bounty flags. One must be careful not to have too many bounties out at once or else your heroes will get divided, as well as having sufficient amounts to keep your heroes interested.

Many have complained about the difficulty but personally, I found it to be just right. Each stage increases in difficulty, from beginner to expert. So far, the 2 expert levels I did were challenging but not impossible. The levels before were practically a breeze.

The main problem in this game is the lack of replayability. While it does have multiplayer, you'll have a difficult time finding a match. There is no random level generator or level editor, and replays of scenarios do not offer much variability.

Other issues typically brought up, including poor AI and difficulty are a manner of opinion. While the AI can be shoddy at times, heroes typically get away alive from difficult battles and attack what you want, provided you provide ample rewards. If anything, low-level Wizards should be smarter and should run from enemies earlier - typically they require heavy micromanagement with fear flags.

Overall, Maj2 is a satisfying, unique game with great graphics and interesting gameplay. Definitely check it out if you're bored of the same old stuff!

Majesty 2 is a great sequel to the original. For the uninitiated, Majesty is all about having absolutely no control over anything but construction and placing bounties on things. Your heroes will go after the bounties, provided you place enough money on them, and your heroes will then bring back the dough and spend it, making you more money. For veterans of the original, Majesty 2 is an updated version of the original, with all the game play. The AI seems updated to me (I don't have heroes that refuse to respond to flags no matter how much I put them up for). As well, the heroes aren't as friggin blind as they used to be, although they make a great joke about that in the intro cinematic. Updated 3D graphics and user interface make the game more enjoyable, although there is a wacky difficulty level change when you get to the harder advanced levels. Still, Majesty 2 is great fun, and a must have for any RTS gamer.

As a massive, massive fan of the original Majesty, I thoroughly enjoyed Majesty 2. It's a very different game to the original - leaving your heroes to die is now associated with some serious penalties, so there's a much stronger focus on keeping them alive. At the same time, Rogues are no longer useless in combat, and Wizards are a lot less fragile. But you can no longer explore the entire map by simply hiring a bunch of rangers and leaving them to it.

Majesty 2 doesn't have the replay value of Majesty Gold, but it's also easier (a mere 'very difficult' game, as opposed to a 'practically impossible' game) and prettier. If you enjoy the humour of the trailer video and you want a challenging strategy/management game that's light on micromanagement, you'll get good value.

Majesty 2 is a decent sequel of majesty 1 but the game is missing almost all of the parts that gave the original its charm majorly its sim aspect of being able to observe the heroes lives but the game still is good if you look at it as a completely different game than the original. Majesty 2 has decent graphics my only gripe is that they seem a bit generic. The music score is great with nice orchestral music in the background. The game still has an issue with difficulty as it quickly jumps from really easy to extremely hard near the end requiring massive amounts of micromanagement to win. all in all a good game but not a true majesty sequel.

I pre-ordered Majesty 2, so began playing Majesty Gold and was very impressed with the AI. The enemy reacted pretty much as expected and my people reacted to the flags as expected. A little explanation; you cannot click on your people and right click somewhere else to move them. The way your army moves is to entice them by putting cash payment onto a flag that is posted to where you want them to move. You'll have to play the game to fully understand. After playing Majesty Gold for a week, Majesty 2 became available. What a big difference in graphics! This game has some of the best I have seen. Gameplay is much the same as the Gold edition, but the graphics is great. Also really liked the music because it coincides with gameplay. Soft music when things are peaceful, exciting music when you are battling. The people's conversation was great. Some of the comments the NCP's make are hilarious (of course I am easily amused). After a while you can tell what type of warrior is dieing by the comment you here. The servant voice that tells you when a building is complete or updated sometimes gets annoying, but after awhile you don't even notice it. I give this a five star, well worth the price.

Don't expect a improved Majesty game, M2 is basically a lookalike with different gameplay and if you are good at Majesty you'll breeze through this game though some of the more difficult scenarios are rather irritating until you get it right. Multiplayer might be one aspect that's better in M2 than the original but I didn't buy the Majesty games for multiplayer so a loss for me.

If you've played the first Majesty then you can mostly expect more of the same, though that's not a bad thing. Majesty 2 has the same uniqueness of the original, and that uniqueness can't be ignored. You'll find yourself frustrated at the inability to control your heroes directly being used to controlling every aspect of things in most games, but when things work right you feel rewarded.

The difficulty seems to jump around a wee bit from mission to mission, despite the difficulty rating they list the mission under.

Overall a 4, it's not close to being a 5 but it's also not close to being a 3. If you were a fan of the first one this is a must have. Also your adviser has the same voice, a major plus to all fans of the original.

We will recommend this game to the game expert.

A very high difficulty will satisfy them.
