Rating: 4.4 (1064 votes cast)

Magicka is a satirical action-adventure game set in a rich fantasy world based on Norse mythology. The player assumes the role of a wizard from a sacred order tasked with stopping an evil sorcerer who has thrown the world into turmoil, his foul creations besieging the forces of good.

Players will be able to combine the elements to cast spells, wreaking havoc and devastation on the minions of darkness. They will also be able to team up with friends and fight their way through the campaign, or test their skills in the magickal arts through other challenging modes.

In Magicka, up to four players take on a grand adventure to save their world from certain doom using a fully dynamic spell system. The adventure mode takes the players across three different levels, ranging from the lush forests of mountain valleys to the frozen halls of the Mountain King where wits and creative thinking are the keys to victory.

In the unlockable hardcore challenge mode, players fight off waves of enemies to earn their place on local and online leaderboards.

Caution: multiplayer skirmish tend to be laggy at times...

An excellent and fairly unique game, with very, very interesting combat. Highly recommended for multiplayer play, but still fun in single-player. Might have trouble with performance and compatibility on low-end PC's.

Great game!

Fun to play, lots of easter eggs, references, etc.

Your mage will not gain experience, it's you who will learn to master your powers. So becoming good does not imply farming :)

A fantastic game, which is full of humor and and fun. Most people have thus far criticized the game (and rightly so) for the enormous number of bugs it had upon release. Having bought and played the game over a week after release, I myself only experienced a handfull of frustrations. While these were annoying, they were completely overshadowed by the sheer volume of fun and hilarity the game offers. Playing co-op with a friend, I don't think I've laughed that hard in ages. The innovative game-play, funny dialog and outrageous in-game antics made for a heck of a fun evening. As the bugs get patched and forgotten, I highly recommend the game to everyone who can find a friend to play with; I can't fathom some of those battles being handled alone!

This game is so damn funny that I don't even care about the numerous bugs and crashes. Yes, it will crash sometimes and yes someone will be disconnected when you play multiplayer. But for the rest you'll jus laugh as you blast enemies (and friends, never forget friends) off the screen with amazing magics and crazy scenarios!

One of the funniest game ever made. Could spend all day bashing those trolls with a different combination of spells, which is really innovative. The game is even better with friends, which usually ends in a terrible mess.

Awesome!

Steam is required to play this game. Great game, both challenging and hard in singleplayer and chaotic fun in multiplayer! Lot of great humor, especially if you are from Sweden since the gibberish language has some swedish jokes in them. It can be somewhat hard to remember spell combinations and remembering where the corresponding keys for the spells are at times.

Magicka has the most creative magic system that I have seen in a long time. The tutorial chapter hints at a great game filled with humor / problem solving / dungeon dwelling / and a bit of combat. With such a great magic system the potential is there for a great game.

However, the subsequent chapters are a letdown. They are basically "who can type faster" combat scenes. The game is still hilarious, but the game challenges muscle speed more than brain.

Singleplayer isn't very good. Because of the checkpoint system, the game can be very punishing, and frustrating at times.

Multiplayer is where the game shines. With up to 3 friends, the game is one majestic mayhem of beams and explosions everywhere. It's different from your usual co-op game, because half the time you're trying to backstab your friends to get their weapons (which also includes a bloody machine gun at one point!). The magic spells are fun to experiment with. You basically have 8 elements to pick, and a max of 5 slots to mash up the elements you have chosen. Ultimately there are a few combinations that are superior, but there is the fun in experimentation anyway.

All in all, this is an excellent game to play with friends. Get a microphone and Teamspeak/Vent/Mumble, and you'll be screaming at one another over the Internet quite frequently throughout the course of the game.

Magicka is a game that hits all its marks: great story, laugh-out-loud jokes, fast-paced action, and ton of fun to play with friends. However, its endemic, sometimes game-breaking bugs keep me from scoring it 5/5.

Magicka is a great game, that I fully recommend playing with friends. The single player is fun by itself, but when playing co-op the experience gets even better. The game has many endearing qualities to it, as the random jokes referring to pop culture and the hilarious Swedish accents used by the voice actors, combined with the simple yet engaging combat makes this game a must buy.

This game is tough as nails, but really fun. It is recommended to play this game with friends for extra fun, but it is playable alone. The difficulty doesn't seem to scale to the amount of players, but to how cooperative your friends are!

You can get quite a lot of fun out of this game, however it has problems with some computers, so downloading a demo is highly recommended.

Magicka is like Gauntlet and Diablo wrapped into one. Not only is the gameplay fun and innovative, the pop culture references top off the game to make it enjoyable to both watch and play. I found myself laughing nearly the entire way through the game. The spell experimentation alone adds something to the game to give it an extra edge. Overall, the game is small, simple, and amazingly fun and addictive. You'll sit down to play the game just to check it out and find that several hours have passed. Check this game out, you'll be glad you did.

Pros:

+Hilarious characters and pop culture references

+Fun Multiplayer

+Plenty of levels to go through

+Added game modes to boost play time and replayability

+Great variety of weapons, staves, and elements.

+Nice music and presentable graphics

Cons:

-Wonky controls

-Some areas have exceedingly punishing difficulty

I have to admit that when I saw the price and watched the trailer, I was rather skeptical. I can say in full confidence that this game put me in my place and taught me to never judge a game by its trailer. To begin with, this game is hilarious, the characters speak in a language I could best describe as the gibberish spoken by the Swedish Chef from the Muppet Show. The pop culture references are great, and they have some for just about any fandom, Starwars, Indiana Jones, Star Trek, and 300, all come to mind. I would strongly recommend that you find at least one other friend to play this with, sure there is a very high chance of friendly fire, but I found myself laughing when my friend blew me to pieces with his lighting bolt spell, as long as you are patient and have a good sense of humor, you're going to have a good time.

As for the negative aspects, my only real complaints are that the difficulty can be a bit too punishing for a single player, and that the controls can be a pain at times. What I mean by this is that your wizard may have an infinite mana pool and a huge selection of elements to play with, but he is rather pathetic when it comes to taking damage, he also has no ability to swim in any substance and will drown if you don't use a quickly melting ice spell. These problems are greatly alleviated when you have a friend to revive you, and I suggest you play that way. As for my complaints about the controls; the left mouse button is greatly overused, you use it to move, interact with people and objects, and attack with your weapon. This seems like nit-picking until you're in a tough spot and trying to flee your enemies, just to run into a sign and get stuck in place as your wizard reads it, when you first play the game, you're likely to press the wrong mouse button several times, and as a consequence you will die several times.

Once you get past these issues, you'll find yourself with a highly entertaining and amusing game well worth the price.

Magicka is a wonderful game brought to life by it's co-op.

The raw humor and silly jokes give off a nice atmosphere and the amount of spells you can create is superb.

Having friendly fire is also something that adds a lot to the game, if not for anything else, the fact you can kill of anyone at a comedic time in any way you want and make a joke between friends, adding a lot to the game's enjoyment.

The graphic style is the standard RTS look from above where you command as some supreme god-like creature, however this is most likely intended as the game concept would be hard to execute in a 3rd or 1st person perspective.

Magicka review

By YourGibs posted 29th October 2011

The concept of Magicka is a wonderful addition to the list of 4 player coop games that have been released in the past couple of years. The raw humor and in game references to pop culture will make you smile and the crazy DLC characters offer variety to the game play. However, after several attempts to play this game with varying groups of folks we were unable to get to far through the game. We ran into game crashes on several occasions which set us back 30-60 minutes due the clunky checkpoint system. A poor spot for Magicka is how easy it is for team killing (or even griefing) other players as the spell system has a steep learning curve.

PLUS

+ raw humor with in game references to pop culture

+ variation in DLC adds new characters and maps

+ large variety of style of weapons (blades, guns, staffs)

NEGATIVE

- steep learning curve to the spell system

- game crashes in Coop will set you back to the start of a chapter

- checkpoint system will have you repeating large chunks of the game whenever you die

Magicka is, simulatenously, fun and frustrating. It's fun because of its sense of humour (Vlad is not a vampire, because he *tells* you he isn't a vampire, honest!), but also frustrating because in singleplayer and multiplayer, you're going to die. A lot. The main gist is that you cast spells by using certain keys to summon elements in a sequence, and then cast them (A,S,F, and space is Haste, which allows you to run fast, for example), while you control the character with the mouse. Where it gets frustrating, at times, is that, in singleplayer, the bosses can be quite hard, and, in multiplayer, your worst enemies are...

..fellow players. See, friendly fire is *always* on, so it's easy to catch a friend in the crossfire, and if two or more players don't have their game face on, they're going to cast spells of opposing elements that cross... and, if you like reference laden indie games like this one, you're going to know *not to cross the streams*. Stream spells of opposing elements will cause a massive explosion, and, while it can be used offensively, more often, the player nearest the explosion is going to die. Of course, death isn't too big a deal in magicka (resurrect is taught really early on), but there are times when it causes a TPK (Total Party Kill), and this leads to the aforementioned frustration.

However, despite this seeming like a sass of the game, it's great fun, once you get used to it. The variety of spells you can pick is tremendous, the collectibles are not mandatory except to achievement hunters (although spellbooks are useful), the multiplayer comes in several flavours, and the game's play time is quite immense for the price. The humour, as mentioned, is great (talk to everyone, it's worth it!), but I do have one final friendly hint for those drunk on the power the spell system gives them:

Crash to Desktop. It's not worth it. No really, don't.

Simple - it would be great if they were to add a few more types of characters, such as a rogue, archer, etc. because The simplicity of the game and "Gauntlet" style team play make for a great Saturday night.

A light-hearted little game with a giddy sense of humor, it is cooperative multiplayer game that sees you and possibly three of your friends roaming the countryside on a quest of mayhem, laughs, and just plain fun. The problem comes in when you consider the controls. Left mouse attacks, right mouse casts a spell, the letter keys on the keyboard queue up various magical elements like fire, ice, nature, and combine them into a single magical spell, the shift key applies whatever spell you have queued up on your melee weapon, and holding the space key does... something... the mouse wheel scrolls through pre-defined spells you've discovered from spellbooks and the elemental formulas for casting them.

The controls are confusing. Add to this that hell is often breaking loose on screen, and confusing sets in. There is friendly fire in multiplayer, and there are many, many different elemental combinations, which become more complex when you cast them in different ways, either on yourself, on enemies, or when coupled with the shield ability (causing the queued spell to surround you in either imbued obelisks or landmines). Monsters approach and what do you do? Fumble. Badly. Cast an ice fog (I'm making up the exact letters since I don't have them memorized), press Q for water and E for fire, Q, E, Q, E, now I have three fogs queued up, and now I want to add ice, so add a couple presses of D. Perfect! Hold right mouse to cast it on my enemies. Done. They're not dead though, so now fire boulder with a tinge of dark magic, S G G F F, cast, but hold it down otherwise the boulder won't have much power.

The game is very charming and downright hilarious, but there's a lot of wasted potential in the magic casting system. It's confusing, difficult to remember, and in the heat of the moment, you're going to rely on repetitively casting the same two spells to kill monsters because anything else requires experimentation and memorization. I've had a lot of fun with this game, and I'm still not sure if it's a good thing part of its humor comes from miscasting a spell I accidentally queued incorrectly, exploding myself, and sending my coop partner off a distant cliff. It's playable, but there are so many things to remember it's often easy to forget the combinations you have to perform to win through certain situations, and situations vary quite a lot.

This is fun game. The game mechanic is quite good and doing magicks on blwoing enemys into the meat pieces, is satisfying. I like the humor of the game, it's so childish and stupid, but in a good way. First time playing campaign ti its end, was pretty fun with my friends, but i have to say that, that game don't offer much more. Yep, there is PvP, Arena and some Vietnam campaing(wich was pretty fun also), but those modes aren't good enough to keep your gaming in Magicka all the time. Also there is lag in the servers and you might not find any other gamers to play with you.

Campaign was awesome with friends, you might try, but the game doesn't offer anything else.

Magicka is a cute yet oddly violent and often explodey third-person action adventure wizard-‘em-up. Quite a mouthful, but it’s a formula that is not only unique but also a whole lot of fun. Taking place in a fantasy world, Magicka puts you and up to three friends in the mucky boots of four wizards as they set out from the comfort of their grand castle to take on the forces of darkness. While this might seem all too familiar to the average fantasy fan, it's more Pratchett than Tolkien with the fantasy setting mixed in with vast amounts of witty humour that'll keep you laughing all through its ten-hour campaign.

So you want to be a wizard, eh?

By Ghiro posted 20th September 2011

You've probably played some RPG's and now you keep thinking, "oh, mages have it so easy they just mumble some obscure words and summon a spell that kills everything" well not in this game. Or least not if you mess up and your spell missfires spectacularly and gets you and all your friends killed.

This is Magicka! you play as a mage (or party of them if you have friends) on a quest to save the world, while this sounds pretty generic it certainly is not.

The gameplay consists in combining elements to create powerful magicks that hopefully kill all the baddies, while this sounds pretty easy it's a lot harder to do if a goblin army tries to cut your legs off, and quickly a simple thunder spell becomes a thunderstorm thats gets you killed.

In addition to the innovative gameplay you also get a game full of nerd humor that will always bring a smile on your face after you've died another time.

Magicka is the newest game by Arrowhead games, which is published by paradox interactive. Magicka is set in a rich fantasy world based on Norse mythology. The player assumes the role of a wizard from a sacred order. The task is to stop an evil sorcerer who has thrown the world into turmoil, his foul creations besieging the forces of good.

The story campaign can be powered through on your own, however by recommendation 4 players improve the fun and chances on completion. 4 lightning bolts or fire balls, more shocking/explosive and screen filling than just one. The story is comical and seems to be a parody of typical fantasy role playing games. Co-op story or arena challenge can be very “experimental” as friendly fire is active and rate of rage quits are high. That’s if you can connect to a game without falling through the floor.

The game play in Magicka is unique as you do not have your spells displayed out on a piece of paper with spells for dummies written at the top; although you might need it. Luckily you can find spell books or experiment through-out the game. The spell system works by the player combining they’re choice of elements together, in doing so the spells become more powerful and destructive. I found that without some serious practice you are going to have trouble memorizing any spells. After you have learned your basic skills you can choose between self cast, forward cast and area of effect cast. Combining these directions and different elements you could end up with a wall of landmines that slow enemies and keep them off your back. Controls work with each spell element being assigned to a key Q,W,E,R,A,S,D and F.WARNING your fingers may fall off or pack their bags and leave your hand for good. Magicka requires quick reflexes and keyboard knowledge, similar to a touch typing genius before you can pull of some of the bigger spells. Luckily the game can be used via a game pad, a mouse or a keyboard. It is entirely up to you which you decide on.

The graphics are colourfully animated and very fantasy orientated, much like the final fantasy remakes. It is stylishly designed yet not computer aggressive. Nevertheless the spells look fantastic and well used within the fantasy world. Ice resembles blue spikes thrusting from the environment rather than frozen water. The lighting strikes remind me of purple diagonal lines vibrating across a fantasy sky.

The sound effects in Magicka is mediocre at best, it can be said that the sound suit’s the game appropriately. Realistic sounds would not have fitted well with the animated style Magicka gives.

Overall the game is great. Apart from it being released too soon bugs and technical difficulties are very high within the game many seen within first days of release. The game is recommended to any fantasy RPG gamer, since the comedy aspect through-out the storyline will make you chuckle at how true and similar it is to most games.

UPDATE: Magicka Vietnam

Magicka: Vietnam isa downloadable content pack for the game Magicka for some unknown reason Vlad decides that we off to the jungle to kill some Vietnam goblins and orcs. Goblins and orcs packed with Ak47s, Rocket launchers and heavy machine guns that is. Do not worry too much though your little mage gets some upgrades as well as being able to pick up their weapons you get given a costume that starts you with a semi-automatic rifle. In addition to the new Napalm strike spell which is overpowered if you do survive the cast sequence first. The game adds 2 new challenge maps an arena map that’s throws waves and waves of weapon wielding creatures at you and a mission map were your mage and a few NPC soldiers that stand right in front of every skill you pull off to help you along your way to taking the goblin camps with every spell in your fingers brains. Rescuing Prisoners of War and stealing military plans before hightailing it out of there.

The difficulty increase from the Original game is defiantly more than a hop, skip or a gigantic leap into hell and you will find yourself dying on more than 1000 occasions. As with the rest of Magicka both modes support single play, if you dare and 4 player co-op for all your suicidal team killing needs.

For an add-on pack Magicka: Vietnam is a great addition to the original game for those that have completed the original and fancy a challenge is worth picking up and attempting.

Game play 7/10

The game play is great but unfortunately the bugs and glitches encountered really show that the game was not ready for release.

Graphics 7/10

Graphics are good for the fantasy context its used in however they are not great and somehow yet still use a lot of computer power.

Sound 7/10

The sounds fit in with the game genre however they are nothing to brag about.

Overall Score 7.0

Magicka is a fun little game where you play a wizard. You can command terrible power and smite your enemies... provided you don't accidentally blow yourself up or your friends before you can. The game features a fun spell-building mechanic that allows for inventive and on-the-fly problem solving. It also is merciless and unforgiving with miscasts, mis-aims and such. It is extremely easy to accidentally electrocute your friends instead of healing them as well as accidentally healing the enemies instead of your friends. Honestly this mayhem is part of its charm and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

While the game is fun in general it REALLY should be played with a friend. The experience is much more rewarding.

Regading the Difficulty + Other Concerns...

By DarwinLovesYou posted 2nd August 2011

First of all this is a very unique game which I found very enjoyable. I am not the type of a gamer who sticks to games but this one caught my interest with its mechanics and kept it.

Now a lot of people claim that this game is too hard and I was one of them. However, it is only a matter of time until you get all the spells figured out and most importantly...shield+earth...without which I kept losing over and over and over again until I used that combo to protect myself and after that most enemies in the game are cake. Take your time learning the system and you will be rewarded.

The BIGGEST complaint I have is the save system which does not allow you to save at will and aside from the checkpoints which you go back to if you die in the game but not after you leave and come back to it, you have to start from the veerrryyy beginning of the level. So say you spent 20 minutes slashing monsters and face the boss which frustrates you and wish to come back later to him....well...you cant. You have to start from the beginning of the chapter.

There are also a few bugs. Now sure if most agree but a multiplayer game is almost impossible to start. There are connection issues as well as match making problems. Its a disaster to be frank.

Easy to play but hard to master applies to this one. This game is worth the price and will bring you enjoyment. It is the most fun to play in co-op with friends by your side on he same machine.

Fun with Friends!

By Gunrun posted 31st July 2011

I bought this game after hearing how unique it is, and how good a coop experience it is. Both of those things are very true. There is no game like Magicka. On the surface it looks like an Action RPG, but it's not. There is no persistant loot or stats, or leveling up, or anything like that. Instead it's an action game, where your spells are created on the fly from elements you choose. It's amazing how well this system works, with most combinations producing something unique and interesting.

The game shines in coop, with up to 4 players at once, running through a lengthy, funny, and well written campaign that is both challenging and varied. The game is playable in singleplayer as well, but what is challenging in coop is in my opinion overly difficult on your own. Dying will often send you far back through the level in singleplayer, whereas your friends can scoop you off the ground pretty much straight away.

As well as the campaign there is both PVP against other players on small deathmatch maps, and a survival mode, where progressively harder waves of enemies spawn in arenas and you must survive them.

Sadly the game can be buggy at times. It is better than it was at first, but I still occasionally have a crash to desktop, which is frustrating in MP because you cannot rejoin mid session, and in both MP and SP saves only happen at the start of each chapter, so if you crash near the end you have to do it over again.

That said this is a brilliant unique game and well worth its small asking price.

This has to be one of the funniest games i've played in a while with lots of references to popular movies and culture. On a whole it's a brilliant little game but it does have a few problems such as not been able to save in a chapter, which considering how hard and frustrating this game can be at times can get annoying having to start over again.

When the game was launched it was so buggy that I thought I made the mistake buying it, but after proper patching and playing it through couple of times with my friends I was very happy with the purchase. Haven't tried most of the new DLC's yet but I doubt they will be a disappointment.

MP is a Lot of Fun but a Bit Buggy

By Nesrie posted 22nd July 2011

Magicka is a really enjoyable game that is a bit of a twitch kind of action game without the frantic pointless pacing of lesser games. I have been playing it cooperatively and it is a blast. The combination of spells and accidently explosions coupled with moments of actual planning is a real joy to be had with others. Now the reason for the lack of a couple of stars are all purely technical in issue. I cannot seem to join my friend's games without going through steam. I can't see the game no matter what I do. We've had a few chapter breaking bugs too, ranging from actual error messages to one of us seeming to be "ghosted" unable to move or do anything but still in the game. These issues wouldn't be so bad if they didn't have an old school type saving systems.

I still recommend the game to anyone who likes a bit of a challenge, enjoys satire and fun, but just keep in mind some unfortunate frustrating bugs are bound to show up, especially in MP mode.

The game is certainly good fun and worth the money, assuming your graphics card is able to handle the requirements.

The pluses:

- Excellent humour, one of the funniest games I've played.

- Innovative mechanism for casting magic that really works and rewards the player that explores it.

- Pleasing music and graphics.

There some minuses that need to be mentioned:

- The multiplayer doesn't really work outside of LAN

- Even after several patches, performance is heavily dependenton your graphics card.

- Peculiar save system that doesn't allow you to save in the middle of a chapter.

This game truly shows the rise of the indie golden age. Witty humor, nice graphics and cool gameplay. The game exposes a lot of potential in the mixing of several elements to create create your own powerful spells, some are repetitive and the mixing can be stiff, but it's just a minor thing in an otherwise great and unique title. A must have for people who enjoy playing games with friends.

This is a great game, with a great sense of humor. It has a ton of funny references to movies and popular culture. The multiplayer is great, it's very chaotic and fun. But a bit unreliable the last time I tried it (which was a long time ago, so it might very well be fixed now). The magic system is really interesting and encourages you to experiment and try to find new powerful spells.

Great game, fun, stylish, a lot of pop-reference humor and the game offers a great sense of accomplishment especially after a hard boss fight.

The first impression that the game leaves is amazing, the amazing simplicity of it, i know i played the demo like 3 times before i finally bought it, unfortunately that feeling doesn't carry on throughout the entire game. Don't get me wrong, you don't get bored of it... your feelings just "settle down".

The magic system is quite innovative although it could be further expanded and upgraded. If you're playing singleplayer you'll probably be using one type of magic most of the time, and that's fine to be honest.

The campaign is the same whether you're playing alone or with up to 3 friends ( don't count on pick up groups a lot, since i doubt you'll find any... most of the games in the lobby are passworded), but when you're playing alone you can unleash those extra powerful magic spells that you wouldn't dare use when there are 3 more people around... oh who am I kidding, i loved killing my friends, you'll love it too !

The game is obviously an indie title, and you can both feel the good side of it ( price, innovation, the feeling you get when knowing that you're not feeding a giant corporation even more money...) and the bad side of it ( it's not as polished as most AAA titles and there are bug, quite a few of them).

PvP mode was released some time ago, and it's quite fanatical and wild but be warned: you'll meet your demise in a matter of seconds... even sooner when crossing your wizard hats against some of the more experienced players

It's a great game all-around, and you should get it =)

Great indie game, that I can recommend to any fans of the genre. However it looks like few of the DLC gear packs add much woth to the game. So stay clear of those and enjoy a fast paced monster grinder, that does not take itself too seriously. It's a blast, enjoy!

Magicka is a Diablo like hack-and-slash game. All though you will usually be at some sort of a distance with your enemies it is still the same concept. You gain all of your powers pretty quickly and gain items throughout the game. You will start combining elements to make awesome spells. Combining the elements to make spells is one of the funnest parts of the game. I recommend playing this game with a friend. First because some of the parts will be a little easier. Second because games are always more fun with friends! There has recently been PvP added to the game for anyone who likes that and there is also a lot of DLC for this game. $10 is an amazing price for this game so $5 (price at the time of this review) is even more amazing. Get it!

For $9.99, Magicka is definitely a fun game and worth buying if you like satire or fantasy based games. With a big enough party, you can easily blitz through the game relatively quickly. With the challenge mode and the ability to play the game at a harder level after beating it, there’s plenty of game time here. Many of the show stopping bugs have been squashed so I’d recommend this game now.

Extremely fun game, great gameplay mechanics which might be simple but at the same time quite involved, you combine different elements to cast different kind of spells so for a fireball you combine fire and earth for example.

The game is filled with pop culture references, some which are quite hilarious, this game is best played with at Least one friend however since it makes it MUCH more interesting because you can actually combine some spells with your friends! And with friendly fire enabled by default you are in for a laugh (especially if playing with good friends)

The game is ok in singleplayer but it's GREAT in multiplayer. You can play up to 4 players through the entire main storyline plus some challenge levels once you are done with that, overall the game is awesome value and I would recommend it to everyone!

This game is a "must have" for all players that like good humour and action... lots of action! I think you'll never get boring, wspecially in multiplayer modes. Killing hordes of monsters and combining more powerfull casts is wonderful. It is the best game for people who get back from work, tired after whole day. I don't know any game from last few years that would be so playable and simple. The price is low, the fun is awesome, and now the best: everyone can play in it and have fun. Id doesn't matter that you play strategy games, FPS or RPG. All of you will find something enjoyable!

A childish carton graphic game with a lot of blood. I just love the graphics of the game, reminds me a little bit of The good old "settlers" or "worms".

You are a wizard which combines the elements to cast spells, there is like hundreds of different kinds of spells that you can come up with. A really fun and personal way to fight!

The game basically have one quest on each level, kill the bad guys! and you can't really do anything else than go straight forward. But you can pick up different weapons and you get rewards from completing bosses, ex u get a machinegun to use offhand!

You get a little bit of bored if you die a lot and get stuck because there is no save system, the game base on checkpoints and levels, you can't stop in the middle of one level and save...you need to finish the level and then it saves for you, that is kind of annoying.

But the best part of the game is that you can play multiplayer with your friends! That takes the game to a whole different kind of level with nice Lan parties.

Awesome adventure in hack and slash style. Monsters, monsters and monsters but what is most important is MAGIC. 8 powers to Free combine. What will happen if you mix ice and water? Or what if You mix 2 waters, 1 earth and e1 electricity? This game is amazing and for sure You wil spend with it many, many hours. MAGICKA is full of ironically humour - in fantasy world You may get M60. Poor blaskmisth made it with paper and... shotgun :) Sounds interesting? Check it!

Magicka might not be the most technologically ground-breaking game that has come out in the past years, or even be close to contending for that title – but it does something a lot of other games forget these days. It provides players with the core essence of gaming: FUN.

If it wasn’t for a few technical glitches and a few imperfections, this game could easily have scored full marks. Given that the developers are fiercely supporting this game and adding more content to it, this game is pure spell-casting fun at it’s finest and you can absolutely not afford to give it a miss.

It’s £8 here on Gamers Gate which is a fantastic price for a game which will give you many hours of enjoyment. It’s highly recommended to play this game in multiplayer co-op – especially in challenge mode, so after you’ve finished the Adventure mode be sure to try that. In fact, why not join our Steam Community while you’re at it to find some co-op buddies? The Global Leaderboards await, so grab your robe and start casting!

Released impossibly buggy, but is more or less in working condition by now. This is one of those games you should only get if you have 1-3 friends to play with. When played alone the game is very hard, frustrating and generally not very fun. This all changes in multiplayer: It will still be hard and occasionally frustrating, but it will also be fun!

In short: Very much worth the price if you think you can get couple of people to play with you. If not, well, trying the demo first is highly recommended...

But be aware that the multiplayer is still very taxing on your internet connection.

If you're in any way an RPG afficionado, you owe it to yourself to play Magicka. For the 10 bucks you shell out, you'll find yourself giggling at the monitor more times than you'll care to admit. This game has one core quality that makes it worth getting:

It's fun.

In an age of video games where every title takes itself more serious than the last, the lighthearted approach of Magicka combined with a great spellsystem is a breath of fresh air.

The game is not without its problem, but the developer seems committed to improving and continuously supporting the game.

So really, skip Starbucks this week, and spend your 10 Dollars on this game.

One of my favourite games of the moment. If you're after something that fun, quick to play, easy to learn and brings up a surprise after surprise, even after playing through it two or three times, then you will be gratified playing Magicka. Though Multiplayer is where the longevity is at.

Magicka isnt even RPG-lite. If you want proper RPG, then get DA:O or Baldurs Gate out. This is unadultarated hack-and-slash, or rather Spell-casting. And when you get hold of the M-60, you wont even want to put it down!

Just hope the devs continue to iron out the issues with gameplay over the next few weeks.

Magicka is definitely worth the $10. There are no levels, inventory, item collecing and stuff but there's alot more to this game and heck alot of fun than one might think.

First off the magic casting system is very unique. You have the elements, Water, Fire, Earth, Shield, Frost, Lightning, Arcane, Life. To cast spells, you either mix them using a combo or cast them in their pure form. E.g. Choosing only Fire casts flames out of your hands whereas combining Fire and Earth creates a Fireball. Some combinations are more complicated and fun like Shield+Frost+Earth creating a rock barrier that fumes ice out which slows enemies and distracts them to hit the rocks.

Through the game you pick up items and spellbooks to enhance your gameplay. Eventually you'll be using awesome weapons that can summon allies to help you, cast stuff like Lightning Bolt, Thunderstorm, Blizzard and Meteor Swarm.

There are many combinations of spells. Not sure how many exact combos, pretty sure some are still undiscovered. From laying minefields, to summoning rain, to AE attacks, to beams, choosing what to use in any situation is a big challenge especially when playing Single Player. Boss fights are also fun.

During Co-op/multiplayer the game gets even more chaotic as FF is always on. So your spells will kill your friends as well. However, you can easily revive them and when the beams start flashing all over the map, you'll be in for a good laugh. However, the online part of the game isn't always stable as yet, with people DCing and crashing to desktop. They have sworn to fix everything.

Humour is there in the game and the game references to movies, tv, other games and other popular stuff. You can have alot of fun with single player alone though it's more challenging since it uses the checkpoint system and if you quit the game you restart the whole level.

Overall, one of the best games I've bought for the budget price of $10.

Magicka review

By GreatFox posted 26th January 2011

This game is pinnacle of backstabbery in co-op. You are probably going to kill each other more than enemies.

For most of gamers the humor in Magicka is just right, it never takes itself seriously, it has references to other games and the gibberish (that's mix of swedish and nonsense?) is pretty funny.

Magic system is one of the best I have ever seen. No potions, no mana, no hassle. All you do is combine elements (max 5 per spell) and fire away. That's it. You can cast your spells as projectiles, AOE spells, enchant your sword (yes, wizards with swords) or cast the spell on yourself. Or you can cast some of the more advanced spells like haste and such.

As with all games, everything is not positive. The game was released extremely buggy. Playing alone worked fine but online play did not. People dropping, client connecting to whatever server it desired, crashing and such. Of course, developers responded quickly and withing 3 hours of release patch was deployed. Patch that didn't help. They promised to path it every 24 hours until everything severe is fixed.

Short: Excellent game with good comedy and godlike magic system with (currently) broken online.
