Isometric Tomb Raider

By Fred_DM posted 10th April

A spin-off of the Tomb Raider series, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is an isometric action-adventure with a heavy focus on co-op gameplay, but it can also be played as a singleplayer game. The game combines platforming, puzzling and gunplay in a very enjoyable manner and it's an all around polished experience that's actually better than most Tomb Raider installments.

A beautiful downloadable game activable on Steam. The gameplay is interesting and challenging sometimes. I really like the puzzles on all the worlds. Excellent price, excellent cooperative challengues and great graphics.

This game controls extremely well. It's just fun to move around, shoot stuff, push or blow balls, cause the physics feels really well. The dual-stick control, moving with the left stick and shooting with the right one takes a bit of getting used to (for me at least), but it works very very well and makes so much fun to fight enemies.

The only gripes I have, is that sometimes the game pulls the camera too far out so it gets a bit small (especially in multiplayer) and that the end game was super easy on single player even on the hard setting. But anyway, this game is a blast. Don't remember when I had so much fun playing.

This game is great fun and the co-op is where the game shines! I was Lara and usually ended up deciding whether my friend lived or died while walking over my grappling hook or jumping a big distance and scaling a wall while. The challenges aren't too tough and add a bit of fun content to each level. We found ourselves replaying a few levels just to get some of the challenges. In the end, the game has some bugs and strange engine behaviors but they actually added hilarious "WTF" moments we both had a laugh at. If you have a friend to play through this with it's totally worth it.

Same Lara, different genre but great game

By Ralp posted 10th February

Dont be scared of trying this tomb raider based game simply because its not tomb raider like. Although the camera and controls changed a lot, it still has the award-winning action/adventure/puzzle style, allied with a local coop option. All maps have adjusted versions either for solo play or cooperative, making the partnership even more valuable. Unfortunately the online lobby is usually empty, which means you need a friend with his own copy to play online, or local if you have a gamepad (and it can be any gamepad, not only the xbox 360 one).

If you still unsure about buying it or not, know that the game includes 2 free DLCs, one is a challenge pack and the other are Kane and Lynch skins.

A truly great co-op game

By Tajdusark posted 22nd December 2011

For a game that I initially thought wouldn't be that good, this game surely blew me out of the water. I didn't think I would be in for such a great ride when I first bought it. The co-op design is perfect and some puzzles really needs you to think, which only heightens the sense of accomplishment when you manage to get further. But no, you won't face the types of advanced puzzles you would find in an adventure game, instead it's platforming puzzles that you more often than not need to solve under pressure.

It might not be a new Tomb Raider game, but it is a great spin-off that deserves its place in any co-op or arcade collection.

This game is basically a top down shooter with some puzzle elements. It has nice graphics and smooth controls. It isn't really a "tomb raider" game because you won't be challenged to figure out any complex puzzles or be required to make intricate jumps like previous games in the series. But what it does it does well. It offers fast paced action, a decent variety of weapons and also has some hidden secrets. You are also rated on your performance in each level which adds to some replay value if your the type of gamer who likes to find every secret, get your best time or complete every challenge. It also allows for co-op gameplay which is nice for those who want to experience the game with a friend. I enjoyed the game even though it lacked any real depth. Overall I give the game a 7.5 out of 10.

Probably, the best Lara Croft game ever made. It changes the view perspective from 3rd person to top down. It's a great combination of puzzle and action game, with lots of collectibles and challenges to keep you playing for a long time.

Focusing less on her tight tops and short shorts, Guardian of Light lets Lara do what she does best: kick ass, collect treasure, and decipher brain-bending puzzles. The addition of co-op and several other game-changing tweaks only serve to complement this can’t-miss formula.

Fantastic game, the graphics, being very simple, can always make you wonder, it's artistically perfect and incredible. Gameplay is very great, a mix of both action and brain. While you have to shoot as usual, there is always a challenge behind the corner waiting for you to complete it in a very short time. As a matter of fact I've never been able to play Underworld, but this looks like one of the greatest games of the last years. Especially if you play it in coop.

To make it short: Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is a great game.

I could never get into the Tomb Raider games, but I love this one. It offers nice graphics and animations and an interesting story. The puzzles are also quite nicely done and fit perfectly into the great designed levels.

The singleplayer kept me busy for about 6 hours, could be more if I bothered to get everything to 100 % completion. I have yet to try the coop, but I guess it would add a decent amount of hours.

Very interesting Lara Croft game. What do you get when you mix Tomb Raider with Diablo? Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. Control scheme was also rather interesting, and very well done. Definitely recommended for any die hard Lara Croft fan, or action RPG fan.

Such a great game in such a small package. This spin off the main Tomb Raider series is well worth the money. The graphics are clean and crisp the sound is good. The puzzle aspect of this game is very well done as the puzzles arn't as obvious as most games of this genre. My only complaint about the PC version is playing it on a keyboard, due to the digital nature of the keyboard it was sometimes hard to work out which way to jump. However unlike other 3d platformers the camera didnt constantly change angle which usually makes it sometimes impossible to land on the platform. I strongly recommend this game as a great twist to an old franchise.

It's not as bad as I thought. This one took a different approach and tried a new sort of game-play , a nice break from the older games, bringing in something new to series.

The selling point of the game is co-operative mode. If you have someone you can play with, this game would be worth your while.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is a very good sidegame of the Tomb Raider Franchise. It is not similar to other TR games. This game is downloadable ONLY. But, they worked harder than the other games. Why? Because this game worth its price. It has no loading times, a very great coop, and good graphics. BUY IT!

Lara Croft from a new point of view

By rcantora posted 14th August 2011

Do not expect the usual Tomb Rider game. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light has a top down perspective that gives it a new arcade look that might disappoint the most purist fans of the saga, but it is able to maintain the original atmosphere and challenging puzzles. Its most distinctive characteristic is that it includes a co-op mode (real co-op, not parallel, mode). There are also some DLC's available, in case you want to extend the fun. The downside: its storyline is kind of weak.

This is a new, very fun, and fair priced game. I recommend you give it a try.

A game that is really different from all the other Lara Croft games but a genuinely great game nonetheless. The graphics are great, the game is lengthy enough for its price tag and the co-op is extremely fun. I would encourage everyone who has not played this game to give it a try.

By far the best lara croft game I have played. It is both a great single and co-op experience. It offers fast pace combat, some puzzles and has high scores and collectibles for this game to have re playability. I got this at $5 and it was a steal, I would pay $15 or however much this game is going for at the moment. Well worth your money if you buy it.

"Another game with Lara Croft" you say. NO. This is a totally new game with Lara. New 3rd person view, new weapons, new nice story. I appreciated very much this game. The puzzles aren't so challenging and they are nicely done. Musics are ok. A good game for all. Well done Crystal Dynamics!

Being my first Lara Croft game I was surprised at how good this game was. Graphics are nice. Gameplay is fun, a mix of shooting and puzzle solving. Nice change of pace from other games I have been playing. Excellent puzzler/shooter.

This Tomb raider game is different than Tomb raider games you used to play. It is played in 3rd person view perspective. It can be played in multiplayer on a single computer (2 people on the same screen).

The puzzles are quite interesting.

I would suggest you try the demo of the game prior in buying it if you are expecting another Tomb raider game.

Absolutely love this game. I've always been a fan of the Tomb Raider series and also a big fan of top down shoot em up or dungeon crawler style games, and this really is a wonderfully fun combination of all those things with an arcade style touch that really finishes off the game nicely.

Definitely recommend this.

One of the best Action / Puzzle games to come out in a very long time. Is a good reboot / going back to the roots for Lara, even if ditching the Tomb Raider name.

A must buy for puzzle fans, the only real downside to this game is the mandatory, extra DRM that you are forced to install and run to be able to play, but even then it's worth it. Thanks GamersGate and Square Enix for this awesome game!

Pretty cool game. You need to think, because it's type of a logic game, but it also looks like a hack n slash. Anyway, graphics is good, story is okay and there also some dlc's, so it can be more longer than normal.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light review

By Navagon posted 27th March 2011

To be perfectly honest I would not have expected to find a Lara Croft game exceeding my expectations. Same goes for a top down shooter.

Yet somehow the two combined really just work. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is a highly polished game in its own right and doesn't suffer from the usual problems of being a console port.

It does play better on a controller, but that's not because Nixxes (the people who ported it) have done a horrible job on the mouse and keyboard controls, it's just the way these things are.

Calling it a top down shooter is a bit unfair. It's not like Lara just booked herself an appearance on Smash TV. The game throws many challenges and puzzles your way. Lara is as versatile as ever and using your grappling hook and hanging off of perilously high ledges at many points in the game.

This might not have been what you'd expect from a Lara Croft game but that doesn't stop it from being a very good purchase all the same.
