Game Good - DRM questionable

By sternglados posted 26th March

The game itself is fun although the mmorpg mechanics are a little overused(combat system can get boring/ quest are often: get this kill that). But all in all it is fun to play because of the good stories that you can find in every region..

The only minor setback is that you have to be online to play the DLC . There is no real offline mode.

Really enjoyed this game mainly down to the nice fluid hack and slash gameplay. The customized classes is a nice touch but as soon as you find the playstyle you like it doesn't require much thought. Really like the world it is set in. It is open world but doesn't feel like it as much as other games. 4 stars because the game is worth playing, but I would of been sad if I paid full price.

Cartoony graphics ala WoW leave something to be desired IMO and the running animations are sorta off, music is rather appropriate and accompanies the adventure well.

Gameplay, especially combat, will suck you in from the get go. Combo system is very well done and there are virtually limitless combinations to dispose of your foes. Nearing the level cap you should really feel badass and find yourself eliminating hordes of enemies in a breeze.

Role-play like you would IRL, getting every side quest will become very tedious so be selective. Inventory system is not the best you've seen.

Graphics 3/5

Music 5/5

SFX 4/5

dialouge 4/5

DRM problem...

... bought the DLCs as soon as I bought this from gamersgate. Turn out I can't play the DLCs offline and thus I can't access my saves using the DLCs.

The game itself is quite decent, but it gets boring after awhile. The combat mechanic are the best part of this game, sort of like Darksiders, only deeper.

Greate game with many explorable areas. Not huge as Skyrim does, but you will never lose the feelings of freedom. The combat system works very well, the diversity of the items are good, the crafting is well balanced, not too complex, but really enjoyable

A brilliant action RPG.

Gameplay is brilliant, with combo based attacks and loads of different combat styles.

Graphics are bright, colourful and varied if a little basic.

Story is pretty generic but solid.

Lots of locations and quests.

It's a very fun game and definitely worth picking up.

If you get sick of snow and mountains, take a trip away from Skyrim and visit Amalur.

Yes, I know they are very different takes on a fantasy RPG, and don't get me wrong - I love Skyrim as much as the next man. But honestly, sometimes you need a little colour in your scenery, know what I mean?

The areas are a little too enclosed for my tastes - it feels like Fable in this respect, but the combat beats Skyrim hands-down, and the story is interesting enough, if a little generic. Honestly, my ideal RPG would be a cross between the two, but at least having both, we can get some open world goodness and some green grass!

A very fun game, Although the menu system needs a little bit of work, other than that great gameplay, great graphics, would recommend anyone looking for an RPG.

I think this is a great game especially the combat, however there is one drawback. The story isn't engaging at all for me. Maybe i have been spoiled with cut scenes with full voice acting (eg SW:TOR) but most of the NPCs are pretty much a wikipedia article with keywords to click on.

Its a huge shame as the world seems so developed and it is being let down by the mechanism you are using to interact with it.

The combat is extremely fun and dynamic and ties more into action rpg type games rather than rpgs.

While i did enjoy the game the lack of story immersion prevented it from being the 5 it could have been as its the only real part of the game that lets it down as it didn't make me rush back to the pc each day to continue the story.

Simply said, this game is entertaining as any other RPG, but the feelings that it was supposed to be a MMORPG weighs heavily on its shoulders.

Expect to see a lot of simple fetching quests on the side,so many in fact that I heavily suggest you stay on the main story path, do maybe the faction quests but not the side quests... unless you don't fear getting terribly bored or repeating the same things over and over again.

It feels like a nice game, with a lot missing, especially a soul; the NPC are forgettable and with no other players in a wide open MMO-style world there is not much to keep going.

Great music on the side, nice design even if a little unoriginal and a very good combat system save this title from the abyss.

Kingdoms Of Amalur is an awesome game with a few problems. The combat system is amazing and the world just looks awesome. However the inventory system is a little clumsy, a lot of the characters are forgettable and the game even on on hard mode is not particularly hard.

Kingdoms of Amalur has been compared to a single player MMO, and these comparisons are very apt; as you go from one area to another, collecting quests and color-coded loot, it is hard not to feel reminded of World of Warcraft and its consorts. For some, missing the other players in this world might distract from the fun, but if like me you prefer to play alone, and if the slow progress of MMOs was a problem for you, then you might just enjoy Amalur.

Amalur is not a game of new ideas. Almost every game mechanic has been seen before, in MMOs, Bioware games, Bethesd games... but those mechanics are executed very well, and for all it's lack of invention and originality and its rather forgettable story, the game is FUN. If an action RPG sounds like your thing, you could definitely do much worse - give the demo a try!

This game was originally intended to be a MMO but later on became a single player game.

For us single player RPG lovers this is great news!

This game has very beautiful landscape, and very nicely done cartoon-y graphics.

The combat system is probably the best you will find in a RPG of this sort.

Many choices to make, factions to join, quests to do and locations to explore and a nice variety of enemies that have top notch design.

If you want to do everything the game has to offer, it should take you over 300 hours.

The one thing I didn't like is that NPCs that give you quests have an exclamation mark on them but this is not a big deal.

I strongly recommend for all of you RPG lovers!

Kingdoms of Amalur has some of the best gameplay i've ever seen in a rpg, it has a huge expansive world, you're not forced to play one way and thats a very important thing for games in my personal opinion. like every other games, it has flaws. i occasionally see some screen tearing and texture pop-ins. over-all its a very enjoyable game, it's fun but it's also quite easy though, i recommend playing on hard.
