King's Bounty The Legend review

I really love this series, and I claim KB: The Legend the best game of series for some reasons. Firstly, this is wonderful beggining of the series. Later, Every element in this game provided very smartly, like Chest of Rage is very varying, with different interesting possibilities ( Better than dragon in Armored Princess). And, of course, graffics, music and atmosphere is fantastic. 9,3/10

An extremely well-done Heroes of Might and Magic style game (move around on a world map with a hero, control units on a square, or hex in this case, grid in battle). KB: The Legend also has a strangely great sense of humor that couples well with its deep and mechanically serious gameplay. It also has zero performance or optimization problems from my experience, and runs like a charm on my less-than-stellar (though certainly above-average) computer.

Simply put, a great game. Hands down one of the better fantasy strategy RPGs I have played. I have invested many hours in this game I feel none of them were wasted. The pacing feels good, aside from a few points in the game where I wish there was a slightly faster means of travel, the pace the game sets is good as you explore and battle your way across the map. You will always be steadily growing stronger as the game progresses, as you acquire more armies, better gear and stats but unlike many games of this type you will always find a challenge, never reaching the point where you march a godlike army through all that oppose you.

The pace and the challenge are what make this game feel really good. You won't get bored with your battles. The constantly changing scenery of the game will pit you against different opponents and the vastly different unit types and battlegrounds will keep you on your toes as you will find that one stratagem won't be effective in all situations.

My one major issue with the game is the lack of multiplayer, pitting your armies against your friends would, in my opinion make this game better than it's HoMM counter parts. But even without a multiplayer component this game is on my list of favorites.

Really good game! Love the Heroes of Might and Magic series, but this game takes it even longer! It's not the same gameplay as of HoMM, but I thinks it brings in a extra touch of RPG elements since you can choose to take quest instead of just "having" one at start!

Kings bounty is an excellent turned based fantasy game.

The game has many good elements. Graphics are lush and well defined, Gameplay is easy to pick up and play with a lot of different creature types to play with. Above all else the music is top class and well worth a listen to with some fantastic tracks.

Overall a classic easy to play game with a good challenge for hardcore gamers. I rate this 9/10

One of the best TBS game, which is similar to HoMM (my favourite game of all time). The mechanics are almost the same, although the graphics is improved a lot in comparison to HoMM3, the best in the series. Easily it could log you 50+ hours.

A very enjoyable blend of tactical battles and RPG elements, King's Bounty is definitely a game to play if you're a fan of either. It's also extremely lengthy (50+ hours) and there's also the option to choose a different character class to experience it all over again.

I've spent more hours than I'd like to admit playing this game. People say it's inspired by HoMM but the truth is the original King's Bounty was the inspiration for HoMM. Honestly that's not as important as the fact that King's Bounty The Legend is a true turn based masterpiece. You like TBS? Then you have no excuse not to play this title!!!

Turn-based strategy at its best

By mefet posted 9th April 2012

This game is one of the best, if not the best, turn-based strategy game you can buy. It have beautiful graphics, even after that many years, it has a solid combat system, a lot of quests, a good learning curve, an interesting history and with a lot of humor. The rpg elements like leveling, equiping your character, marrying... give it a lot more depth. Will you chose a wife that better boost your troops or one that you can equip with better magic items? will you have sons?

Sincerely, this is one of the bests games I ever played, it kept me more than eighty hours playing it. If you like Heroes of Might and Magic, this game is a solid rival to any game of the series. Play it and have some fun.

One of the best times to be had with a PC. The best kind of weird russian humour, attention to detail, excellent handpainted graphics and a RPG battle system that doesn't tire is what you can expect from this cult re-imagining of a classic Amiga title. This is a standout title everyone should own.

This has been a great game. I've actually gone through it twice. That's odd because I'm not usually a replayer so the replay value is high. It's just such a different game. That is what makes it so much fun. It plays fairly well on my notebook (core2duo processor, 3 gb ram, integreated video card). Give it a try. You wont be sorry.

Many games like this out there..

Let me start with saying I have played quite a few games like this one. The Heros of Might and Magic series, the Panzer General games, etc. This is, aside from HoMM 2, the best game of its type I have played. It is very deep, has great AI, lots of character customization.... It's only downside is it got tough quickly, though I very much enjoyed the challenge. I am sick of 'press x to win' games that have been the mainstay for the last 5 years.... Pick this up if you enjoy turn-based tactical combat or if you just want to play a game that will actually make you think for more than three seconds. ...Just my 2 cents.

A fun game, but be careful-- you have limited numbers of troops to purchase in each area, thus the game can turn into running around seeking out a battle that you can actually win. This can grow tedious. My first time through, I quit after a few hours. However, I returned to the game and ended up loving it. I recommend it, just be prepared to pick and choose your battles.

This is one of my favorite games of all time.

Imagine Heroes of Might and Magic as a singleplayer rpg, and you've got King's Bounty - The Legend. You start off in the modest position of the kings "treasure searcher", but you soon get involved in more serious business. You can play the game as a Warrior, Paladin or a Mage, which adds to the replayability of the game. The character development is pretty good, even though the leveling-bonuses can be a bit too random from time to time. Either way, you have a nice skill-tree where you choose what to specialize in.

The quests are pretty decent and often funny. The dialogue between you and other characters are often a hilarious read, and you will remember most of the characters you meet for a while.

The World is very beautiful and complements the story and characters really well. You will travel through many different lands; forests, islands, mountains, caverns and even to "hell" itself! The world itself will get you in a good mood.

The most solid part of this game is the combat gameplay. There are a lot of different, interesting creatures, from many different races and animals. Many of them have different special attacks, which add many interesting strategic choices to make. You also have a broad range of spells to use, and 4 different spirits to aid you in combat.

I recommend this game!

A great game, and a great start to the KB "Trilogy". While the campaign is not as humorous nor deftly told as Armored Princess', the side-quests are probably even more funny, and the game itself is not lacking for units or spells.

A great game - although it shares a lot in common with its sequel. If you only get one, get the slightly-superior Armored Princess.

Amazing, is a word I'd use for this game. You are a knight, sort of, you start as the royal treasurer seeking marks lost to bandits, as you do so you find quest after quest some with branching paths depending on your choice; do you kill all the walking talking plants that's been wrecking the farms or find out why that's been doing so and make peace. On the maps there are countless nooks and hidey-holes for secrets and extra items that can boost your power in combat. Now combat is both fun and frustrating at times, you find mobs you can face roll with in feet of mobs that will face roll you. The old rules of check the mobs strength before battle highly applies here. Combat is like a strategy game meets chess, you have your pieces/army and and the mobs his theirs. You buy troops out of battle for gold you find or gold you win in battle. You can stack the same type of troop to bolster there prowess in battle, but you can't just stack to win as you're limited to a number of the same type of troop which goes up as you level or find certain items. You can also get married and have a wife follow you around and help by holding extra items and armor.

All and all a very very good game for RPG and RTS lovers.

King's bounty is an RPG game taht is quite different from other RPG games. It is more like the turn based strategy--Heroes of might and magic, except that its has less strategic element, it has a rage point which you can cast spirits of rage spells, and its exploring mode is real time. The tactical combat mode is very similar to Heroes of might and magic. The graphics, sound, and music of this game are very nice. The story is interesting that it takes you a few dozen of hours to finished all the missions. The drawbacks of this game is that font size of the quest's text is too small and after accomplished all the quest, I have little desire to repaly this game.

Didn't play the original King's Bounty but have sunk quite a number of hours into this one. It consists of mainly 2 elements, the campaign and the turn based tactical combat segments. The campaign is sprawling and takes in an overarching story and a whole slew of subquests. The campaign is MASSIVE. Expect hundreds of hours of gaming. The tactical combat uses quite a variety of units but, considering the length of the campaign, gets old after a while. If anything this game is too long, I ran out of interest about 2/3 of the way through the campaign. If the game was shorter it would have been perfect though as by then I'd sunk weeks into the game. Recommended for the in depth fantasy campaign and neat combat but don't be surprised if you don't finish it. You'll probably get your money's worth though.

I played the original King's Bounty many, many years ago. This game is very entertaining and fun. I really like it on the whole. Combat is turn based but navigation around the world map is real time.

I was a bit surprised how much graphic capability this game requires, but I set it on the lowest graphic resolution settings and it still looks great. I have an AMD Phenom 2.6 GHz Processor with 4GB of RAM. When I load the game I often need to wait a minute or two while there is some choppiness but it goes away after that for the entire time I play. I don't recommend buying this game with less capability than my computer has, because I feel that I'm at the minimum (3.9 Windows Index Rating).

Game has decent replay-ability as there are three classes, they can be built differently, monsters are different, and purchasable allied troops are somewhat random from the various purchase locations.

What can I say? The most addictive game I've played for decades. And I've been playing for decades! Reminds me of Ultima IV in spirit. A perfect combination of exploration, character development and tactical battles. The tactical battles are what the game hinges on and it is testimony to the skill of the developers that the battles never get boring. An interesting contrast to Total War, where I invariably find myself just rushing through "auto battles" after a few hours play.

There is so much craft in this game. The artworks looks a little 'cartoonish", but it fits perfectly and really makes the game stand out. I have no idea how some reviewers say it looks 'dated'. It looks superb to me! And the game is so well coded, the 3D scenery moves in a noticably more realistic way than on many games. And I thought there was a bug in install when the game had maxed all the settings out. But no, even on my less than stellar PC, the game runs flawlessly. Actually, some aspects of the graphics worry me. In all other 3D games, you can see the polygons, see the rough edges. But not KB. I zoom right in on the hyaenas and still I see no polygons, just a living, breathing creature. The same goes throughout the game. Little effects such as troops fidgeting as they stand around have been done before, but in KB they just look so ....life like. Makes me ask: how did they do that?

King's Bounty The Legend review

King's Bounty The Legend is an awesome alternative to Heroes of Might and Magic. It has very cute graphics and animation, the story is intriguing and the gameplay is more than appealing.

To really enjoy and appreciate the depth of King's Bounty's universe you need to be prepared to read a lot of text. By a lot, I mean A LOT. Everyone seems more then eager to share his/ her/ it life story with you and, for most of the part, the semi-monologues are quite interesting. You get to choose what to ask and whether you accept or decline a quest. Not a single line of it is voiced, so you're left with reading. It's really not that bad, though I wish that the translation (from Russian) was done better.

Also, the gameplay mechanics can be quite fun and you'll often find yourself exploring every single pixel on the map looking for runes/ gold to make you powerful or to simply enjoy the beautiful landscapes. You have complete freedom of movement while you're on the map but you are restricted while battling all kind of human fractions and monsters. To become victorious you use magic and all kinds of troops. You cannot attack with your avatar but you can use the many abilities of your army.

However, the gameplay may prove to be repetitive after 15+ hours. Another problem is that King's Bounty The Legend can become very hard for a very short period of time even on the easiest level so you'll always need to be careful how you organize the arsenal of magics and armies.

This is essentially Heroes of Might and Magic stripped of all the strategic stuff and focuses on the RPG and tactical aspects instead. Become a hero, field an awesome army, go save the princess ! (and run into plenty of wacky and nonsensical stuff with a decidedly very Russian sense of humor too)

This is a totally updated version of the original "King's Bounty" from years ago, which was the precursor to the "Heroes of Might and Magic" games. Graphics are awesome and if you love the "Heroes" games then definitely get this one. You move your knight around the map and can attack or avoid monsters (that are usually guarding treasures). You have multiple stacks of archers, priests, swordsmen or friendly monsters; you choose what makes up your army. Combat is turn based, using spells, special skills, etc.

If you are going to buy this then note that Gamersgate sometimes has great special prices on the different games. The platinum version was over $35 but I bought this game and the King's Bounty Crossworlds Game of the year expansion (which has the Armored Princess and Crossworlds expansions), for only $12.50.

King's Bounty The Legend review

By allenknight posted 24th July 2011

I remember playing King's Bounty on the Genesis back in the day and being slightly annoyed at Heroes of Might and Magic when it came out because it felt like such a rip-off of this original. King's Bounty does play very similarly to HOMM but is much brighter and does away with the turn based game play in favor of a free roaming adventure across a very wide game world. The character classes all do offer a different game experience (playing as a warrior versus a mage is staggering) and the items and army recruitment points are random each game so you have no idea what you will find each time. Fortunately, and unfortunately, the game is *extremely* long and you will spend a great deal of time doing quests - which are sometimes fun and well thought out or just irritating - and fighting innumerable battles which are both fun and repetitive.

I really enjoyed the game but it took so long to finish that I am burned out and satisfied at the same time. Eventually I want to go back and play Armored Princess but that will be at some time in the future when I have a few weeks I can set on fire and dedicate to the game.

Overall, a very engaging and entertaining game that will easily eradicate hours of your life. Difficulty is steep and you will probably have to spend a lot of time backtracking to replenish losses to your army but this is a great game for fans of the genre.

I really wanted to like this game. It looks attractive enough, but for some reason it just didn't grip me. I was hoping for something more akin to the original; this one seems disjointed with unclear objectives and a confusing interface. It's pretty though, and fun enough for a little while--but if you're looking for a reboot of the old-skool King's Bounty, you'll be disappointed.

King's Bounty is definitely a great game. The artwork is top notch, especially on the UI and the characters. It's also a very fun mix of RPG and HOMM-like tactical battles. You run around doing quests, fighting bandits and undead and demons all with unique abilities. Your hero can level up and has various talent trees to spec in, so you can be more of a mage casting spells, or more of a direct combat hero benefitting your troops directly. It is a foreign game, but the translation work is very good and the humor developers intended is thankfully not lost in translation. Highly recommended for anyone who likes HOMM-style tactical combat and one long-running "campaign".

A great game, that I spent many good hours with. At the time of the release, it would be a definate 5/5. However I think that KB:Crossworlds would be the best alternative these days. You get essentially much more gameplay, with more advanced gameplay, for a little more money. However you could go back and buy this, after you have finished that one. It's almost as good and is a real winner too.

This game is also easier than the later games, so you might want to start your KB journey with this one, if you want to start a bit easy. As a bonus, you will get the whole story, in the right order, as Armored Princess continues where this one finished.

King's Bounty The Legend review

By alghero posted 28th May 2011

King's Bounty is a strategic turn-based game of 1C Company, based in a fantasy world. It is a Heroes of Might & Magic game related, with a lot of points in common and some enjoyable differences. It is not a "clone", even if, for the funs of the former saga, many things will sound like a déjŕ-vu. First of all you have one hero to control and to send around the map, with attributes and characterics that increase with the levels. The movement in the map field is in real time and it’s plenty of quests to fulfil to proceed in the story and sidequests that gives you experience or precious objects.

The fights are resolved like in the chess, deploying the troops in the left side and waiting for your turn to move, attack or use particular abilities for each unit, depending on how many action points the single unit owns. During our turn, it’s possible to cast magic or spend rage points summoning the Spirits of Rage. Rage and Magic are the opposite, with the time magic is replenished, Rage it’s increased only fighting and decrease while walking. This make the game really interesting and fast, you cannot afford to sit down in a place if you are not plenty of rage potions! Of course the pause option becomes really useful.

Basically really simple, but still really enjoyable, compared with HOMM, the units are bought in special huts, castles, nests and places similar, they are not regenerated and the number the hero can take around, depends on his leadership level, that increases with levels, depending on the class chosen at the beginning (warrior, paladin or mage), objects equipped, bonus obtained and skills selected. The customization is not like many classic RPG, but still you can try different combinations to obtain different results.

It’s possible to travel freely in the map, even if some locations are locked until some point in the story. If the enemies became too strong, there is surely another point in the world where obtain the necessary amount of experience and gold to be able to return back and finish all the quests. That makes the exploration enjoyable and funny.

Graphically it’s really good, well detailed and bright even if a little outdated. On the opposite side the audio is nothing of particular. But the gameplay is something amazing. To conclude, be aware, this game can stole a significant amount of time from your life!

I've played the HOMM series and this is 10 times more fun than HOMM. I would not buy a new HOMM but would buy a new Disciples or one of these. The strange thing is the story in this game manages to be compelling which I though would have been impossible for this kind of game. Thank god it had non US writers/gamers developing the plot - they did a very good job.

I bought this game on a whim since it seemed to resemble the Heroes of Might & Magic titles and to my suprise I actually enjoyed it a lot more than those games.

The game is pure singleplayer however the Campaign is extremely long. (took me far more than 50h on normal difficulty).

Its packed with content and all the different RPG-ish possiblities make it open to be played in a lot of different styles.

You start by choosing your class and after that to create even more possible strategies one also has access to loads of spells, different skills and equipment to boost your army and Hero. You even get allied spirits that level and has skill trees and so on.

The Graphics are great if you can accept the slight cartoonish/warcraft look.

As for the gameplay itself it was often so that if I struck a heavy loss on first attemp I could experience a easy victory on second attempt just by changing my tactics wich is the essence these kind of games.

Overall a really wellpolished game packed with content and interesting gameplay. I'd say its a must have if your in to the genre (Disciples, HoMM)

It can get a bit repetitive to fight battle after battle, but that's to be expected from any game of this sort, and the quests are interesting enough to offset this. King's Bounty The Legend review

By Rekruut posted 11th September 2010

King's Bounty: The Legend is a fantasy saga, an exciting blend of role-playing adventure and tactical combat, stirring classic memories of the legendary "King's Bounty" game.

A hero (warrior, mage or paladin), and an army of his loyal companions in arms travel across a huge continent composed of dozens of linked locations. Setting kings upon the throne, overthrowing them, saving princesses from the claws of dragons, searching for pirates on the high seas, finding treasure chests, vanquishing villains who are attempting world domination… These are the everyday challenges the player – the Hero - will face in King’s Bounty: The Legend.

Your character travels in real-time across land and water, underground, and across the skies searching for treasure, finding equipment, developing multiple skills and fulfilling the orders of kings to further his career. When fighting enemies, the game switches into Tactics mode. You can control your troops in the battle arena, use your spell book and summon powerful Spirits of Rage.

As the plot unveils, the player will come across exciting puzzles and mysteries, and make many difficult decisions. Will you make alliances with a powerful necromancer or steal from the Dwarven treasury? Just never break the oath you gave to your King. He does not forget or forgive such sleights easily.

at first i though its just another homm like game. i was wrong. this one is far better than homm v. what i love most is this game is not just accumulating spells and armies. there are caps which is good!

then i learned that kb predates homm :) i realized it is not another homm like game. it is an original.

King's Bounty is somewhat of a sleeper hit in the Strategy RPG genre. Like many games of the genre, the battles are turn-based and focus on placement of units on hexagonal grid (sometimes the grid is made of a different shape, like a square). This is similar to games like Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics, Heroes of Might and Magic, Military Madness, Advance Wars and others. King's Bounty follows the more Western style of moving a character around a board and engaging in smaller-scale battles along the way (as opposed to Japanese SRPGs, where the battles often take place on entire maps on a larger scale). This can be a matter of preference for some people, but I enjoy both styles in their own ways.

Like many other SRPGs, you can recruit, improve your abilities, and acquire items which must be strictly managed. Development and progression of your character is somewhat nonlinear. You can choose your battles based on experience level, and you can even get married in the game. If you lose troops, you must spend the money to recruit more.

It presents some interesting ideas for a genre that isn't heavily represented on PC and provides a lot of enjoyment for those that like slower-paced RPGs and tactical gameplay. It's also a very good price, so if you're interested in this type of gameplay, I highly recommend it.

Once I knew there was a turn based stragegy game like HoMM, I was interested in it and bought with no doubt. It didn't make me disappointed. The nice graphics, various quests and items, especially the units and abilities which allow you to enjoy your own style to play.

I can say it's almost as good as HoMM, as this game crashes occasionally, which is a bit annoying. Without this issue, it's definitely a must buy game this year.

This is quite a solid game, and excellent value for the price. The turn-based battles are a great way to chill out when you're looking for a game that will get you thinking without getting you stressed, and adjustable difficulty lets you set the pace you like. The only reason not to get this game is that the sequel (Armoured Princess) is extremely true to the original, while making a number of improvements that make it significantly more fun.

King's Bounty The Legend review

By Mivo posted 12th August 2010

Turn-based strategy games with a fantasy theme have become rare, and quality titles of this genre are even harder to find. "King's Bounty: The Legend" was an unexpected surprise for me. In fact, I hadn't even heard about it until some time after release. A bit wary, and prepared for disappointment, I started playing -- and was hit by a colourful, fun and exciting gaming experience that brought back memories and renewed my faith in PC strategy gaming!

The game features traditional, turn-based combat that gamers have enjoyed in the HoMM titles, the Age of Wonders series and, not to forget, the Disciples releases, to name just a few popular examples. The player's self-composed army of up to five different types of units battles on a hex grid against a wide variety of enemies, many of which you can also hire into your own troops (but beware, not all races get along with the others). The player's character, chosen among three classes, doesn't fight on the field, but can sling potent spells, both beneficial and harmful, and may well turn the tide with his magical interference.

Exploration is done in an open, free-form and real-time world, much like you'd expect from an isometric RPG. The world is lush, varied and filled with countless objects, intriguing chests and NPCs eager to offer you one of the numerous side quests. There is always something to do, someone to talk to, something to discover, and it gets never monotonous.

While essentially a turn-based strategy/tactical game, the RPG elements add flavour: Equipment allows you to customize your character, skills can be learned and updated, and you can even marry and have children, both of which will have an effect on your army. (Yes, you can also get rid of your wife, but she'll take all your children and some of your gold! Now why does that sound familiar?!)

This is a long game. It's easy to get into, and once it grows on you, which happens rapidly, it becomes addictive and the "just one more turn" phenomenon kicks in (okay, fine, exploration is done in real time, so it's more like "just one more click"!). You're looking at 50+ hours of quality gaming fun here, and quite a few people exceed the 70 hours mark. And when you're done, there's always the sequel to dive into!

On the downside, the game requires some backtracking, which can seem a little tedious. The translation is occasionally a tad off, but not really in a disturbing fashion. There are some difficulty spikes, but it generally increases the challenge smoothly and even gamers who aren't familiar with the TBS genre will not be overwhelmed. It's a gentle game, at least in the beginning (and it does get harder -- it's not the type of game that will bore you to tears after three hours). There are also four difficulty modes which allow you to fine tune the game to suit your needs.

And now I have to go back to the game and play some more! :) If you like turn-based strategy games that don't stress you out, and you have a soft spot for fantasy, perhaps even like a quirky sense of humour, then you can't go wrong with this game. :)

This game is very similar to a single player Heroes of Might and Magic. The graphics are great, the creatures diverse. Unlike HoMM, the creatures don't replenish (except when you reach a major milestone in certain castles) so managing what you have is important. Oftentimes, I was forced to save the good creatures for suppression/boss fights while using the common ones for regular battles.

I bought this game during last weeks summer sale because I've been looking at it for awhile and for that cheap I figured I would take a chance. I've only put 4 hours into the game so far but there's a few things that new players should know. There's not really a tutorial so it was confusing to say the least. Also, still I'm not sure what I am suppose to be doing besides quests and killing mobs. I mean, I'm not being told how to progress the story, I guess by just doing quests. For me this game doesn't have a addictiveness factor either. First few days I put 2 hours in each but haven't come back to the game since. Besides these 3 things I still rate the game 3/5 and look forward to playing more.

Hey, it plays like Heroes of Might and Magic crossed with Space Rangers 2. There's no way that can be a bad thing. Roaming the map, signing up or training creatures and warriors, and collecting spells and character points are all similar to the former. From the latter you have zany quests and hilarious dialog. Nobilis has created a game that's fresh and lively, though the gameplay itself should feel like coming home for those that have spent hours with Heroes of Might and Magic, Disciples, Age of Magic, Master of Magic, and other fantasy/strategy/boardgame hybrids. This is the gaming equivalent of comfort food for me.

KB:L is a good continuation of the old King's Bounty series that Heroes of Might and Magic was based on. It abandons the city management aspects to focus entirely on a single hero and his army. The tactical combat that comprises the bulk of the gameplay is very well done with a wide variety of unit types and potential tactics. There is some degree of replayability due to enemy and reward randomization, although the maps and storyline remain the same. KB:L is well worth picking up for any fan of turn-based tactical combat.

How can I express my appreciation for this game? King's Bounty and its sequel (Armored Princess) are true gems in a time in which most games are rushed out of the door, unfinished, or just mindless entertainment. The graphic is rich and suggestive, the game runs smoothly and without annoying bugs, and the blend of strategy and RPG elements is perfect: you will soon find yourself at 3 am, exhausted but still wishing for that "just one more turn, just one more battle". You run around the world resolving interesting quests while advancing the main plot, and in doing so you battle (in a classic-style turn-based system) army after army of very well designed and balanced enemies. You have challenges at any level of difficulties, but try to win the game without losing a single army at impossible! What can I say, I am very happy that this game came along to revive a stagnant genre, and I am looking forward for any new sequels. Recommended without reservations.

This is one of the best games I've played in the last years. The game actually seems to be a sort of sequel of Heroes of Might and Magic. The gameplay, then consists on the classic heroe/army approach present in the HoMM saga. However, it is certainly more fluid than it was in HoMM 5. One of the only games I can think of that is actually easy on easy difficulty and hard on hard difficulty. While you can play it on impossible you will need to plan things out well and load often as you learn how to handle the harder battles.

PC Gamer just placed it in the top 100 games of all time, last month. 5-5 stars for me.

If your not sure, download and try the demo. Just be aware that the demo gives you a "leg-up" with starting items XP and such. The actual game play is a lot more challenging.

While not a true remake of the original King's Bounty it follows similar gameplay principles. There are a few minor niggles, but overall this is a very well done game.

The game is real time in your wandering across a very colourful, well presented fantasy world, switching to turn based tactical combat when you encounter an enemy. The tactical combat is incredibly well done, with certain additions to the battlefield to improve variety and virtually every troop type you can recruit having their own special abilities.

There is an excellent sense of humour running throughout the game which can take it a little to the bizarre at times, though it's a welcome break from po-faced Tolkien wannabe's.

The minor niggles can irritate, but never really break the charm of the game. On occasion you will find yourself stuck in an impossible situation due to having too few troops and already exhausting the local supplies, saving regularly is a must. The difficulty seems a little off kilter too, what should be a sequence of challenging battles can become far too simple and relatively easy sections thrown off by a sudden challenging fight. There can also be a lot of backtracking across previously cleared lands to complete various quests or progress the plot.

On the whole however this is a charming, at times hilarious, game which is highly recommended.

There is now an Armored Princess standalone expansion for King's Bounty:Legend. They're both similar to each other, if your new to the games, then by all means do get the cheaper one to see if you like the game enough, and if you do get the other in the future. There's also a King's Bounty Gold pack that is $5 more than King's Bounty Armored Princess, so if you ever consider getting Armored Princess, you might as well buy the Gold version and get King's Bounty:Legend for $5 which is great value.

There's a lot to love about King's Bounty, and I can certainly see the appeal. If you know you love tactical RPGs, and you like the look of this game, I don't think you'll be disappointed. For those who aren't quite sure though, I recommend trying the demo to get a feel for the tactical combat and soak up the atmosphere for a while. If you do purchase the full game, one thing you won't do is finish too quickly. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if a large majority of players never reach the end. That's not so much a slight on KB as a recognition of just how much of it there is -- it can, though, lose some of its lustre and even feel like a big of a slog eventually. Still, it's the kind of game that is there to be played and enjoyed, not rushed through. If you get, say, 20 hours of fun out of King's Bounty, I don't think it really matters if you burn out and don't make it all the way through.

King's Bounty The Legend review

King's Bounty is a game with somewhat eclectic appeal, but for its target audience it will probably prove extremely addictive - it kept me busy for a solid two weeks. The game combines HOMM-style tactical combat (though better balanced, due to the restrictions on army size) with gameplay more focused on exploration and questing than resource-gathering and defending towns. You control only a single hero here, rather than many. The core of the game involves exploring the world, questing, fighting monster armies, collecting treasure, and leveling up to improve your hero and expand your army. It's very easy to succumb to "one more encounter" or "one more treasure," and the game will take you a good while to complete if you fully explore its world. Aside from the somewhat odd translation to English, the only criticisms I can offer are that the game sometimes feels grindy, and combat against similar armies can get a bit repetitive because of it.

It's hard not to mention Heroes of Might and Magic or Disciples, so I won't bother trying. It's just like those games, except it has a continuous world (no seperate scenarios) and a wondefully off-center sense of humour.

In comparison to the named games, this cookie is tough. Super tough, if you want to do everything in the game, take all the loot and kill everyone. However, you are never forced to go diving into the hard stuff, you can quite happily diddle around doing some gardening instead (which isn't quite so easy when they are trying to eat you).

Had never played or heard of King's Bounty before I spotted this game at a discount here. Read reviews with comparisons to HOMM series, which I liked and decided to try it. Glad I did. The story line is very rich and much better in my opinion then any of the HOMM's (but I haven't played HOMM V, yet). KBTL (I decided to make my own acronym for King's Bounty: the Legend) is also very easy to pick up and begin to play. Even the battles and purchasing of troops/spells is easy to understand. I do like games that take hours of reading the manual, but sometimes it's nice to just get into a game and NOT have to spend time in the manual at all, if you don't want to. KBTL was easy in that respect. The only parts I needed help on were finishing some of the quests. I wasn't exactly sure where to go sometimes to find a certain person or castle etc. It's probably just me because I don't like to go exploring all over the place to find what I need in a quest I need it spelled out for me. I do highly recommend this game if you don't mind turn based battles. But, if you like a good story, real time exploring with your character and very good (sometimes humorous) NPC conversations then get this game. I would even have paid full price if I would have known how good it was.

Since the comparisons to HOMM have been made extensively, I'll try to avoid making any more and focus on the pros and cons instead.

The graphics are colorful and detailed and the game is beautiful for the most part. Small details like squirrels jumping from tree to snow-covered tree may seem irrelevant but ultimately add a lot of life and character to the game world. Unit models, spells, and animations are detailed and very well done, which is good as you'll spend the majority of the game looking at them in one of the seemingly endless battles. The only area where the graphics seem to fall flat is the character portraits and inventory, which can be nondescript or overly simplified. Additionally, the highly detailed battlefields and units are great but can get cluttered making it occasionally difficult to decipher what exactly is going on.

There are a variety of quests options keeping things varied, from overworld collection quests to fetch and return quests to "kill the monster" quests, and they are of varying difficulties, which keeps things varied. Each overworld map typically has a handful of more difficult battles which will force you to move on and come back later to complete, which is both good and bad - on one hand, this keeps you from getting bogged down in a single area, while on the other, you can occasionally accidentally get into a game-ending fight quite on accident, forcing you to load from a previous save. This would be less irritating if the autosave occurred a little more frequently - it's very necessary to make use of your quicksave to avoid fairly serious backtracking. Additionally, while there is a quest log it doesn't provide very detailed locations of where the NPCs in play are located, which when combined with the rather barebones map can occasionally result in mindless wandering trying to re-encounter the NPC who gave you the quest in the first place. While it is easy to add your own map notes, it would be nice if the game gave a little more direction.

The battles themselves - the meat and potatoes of the game - are very well done with several tiers for each unit type, essentially two different magic systems, multiple special abilities for many of the units, and sufficiently distinct units (for the most part) to keep things interesting and avoid tedium. Because you don't control your own castles for unit generation you are forced to adapt to the unit types available in a given region and change the nature of your army frequently, which is good because your armies are composed of only 5 different unit types at any given time. I wish there were more options for upgrading your units to more powerful versions, or the ability to carry around more units to select which 5 will go into battle - this would add an additional "strategic" element to each battle and reduce the amount of backtracking needed, especially early in the game.

Overall I quite enjoyed this game - while it's not particularly difficult a

King's Bounty: The Legend is what I like to call "western strategy RPGs", or the Western equivalent to Japanese SRPGs such as Fire Emblem, etc. The game gives you control of a character in his quest as an employee of the king, meeting hilarious characters and situations.

The player must manage a small army of units, exploring the world to recruit new troops, while solving quests that will guarantee the money and leadership required to support the army. The character can also carry items which may affect combat results (granting extra money) or combat itself (boosting units stats). A major feature of the game is the Chest of Rage, which gives more combat options and also more humorous dialogue.

The worst part about army management is having to backtrack along cleared areas where there's nothing left to do. It becomes a chore after hard battles when you have to replenish units.

The world is bright and colorful, a great choice in days when developers choose to follow the photorealism path. The battle arenas are very detailed and animations are good enough.

Although most of the quests require running from one point to another and fighting something, there are interesting battles such as the item Keepers and Boss battles that offer some variation.

Overall, King's Bounty is recommended to anyone that enjoys a good game that doesn't take itself so seriously but is polished and deep enough that will provide hours of fun.

King's Bounty The Legend review

You know Heroes of Might and Magic (preferably 5)? Yes, it has been said before: Kings Bounty feels like HoMM (although HoMM 1 felt like the first Kings Bounty, actually, ages past).

The feel is the same - style and quality of graphics are rather similar, combat system is very much alike... but it's an RPG, and real-time, at that (except for combat, that's turn-based). You only play a hero (of one of three classes) and do not own castles. You can visit them, buy troops from them, but you do not own, build or expand them. You only travel, collect treasures, and fight. The storyline is interesting, although some of the dialogue may seem a tad forced if you have a specific image of your character in mind. Difficulty is okay, although you should watch where you are going (there are some parts of early maps that aren't supposed to be accessible right away, they are guarded by VERY strong foes, watch your step!) and you should accept beforehand that you may not be able to beat every quest given to you at the time it is given to you.

Long story short: If you like turn/hex based combat HoMM-style: Good. If you also like RPGs, exploring and living through a storyline, and can live without the castle/empire-management typically associated with turn-based games: Even better. And even if you're not sure, it's no problem: A Demo is available, and it shows a nice bit of the game already...

This is an absolutely terrific game that offers many many hours of entertainment. As an admitted fan of the original, I wasn't sure whether my nostalgia for the original would be enough to carry this game. Fortunately, nostalgia was not required as this is a brilliant game in its own right.

The combination of RPG, strategy elements, exploring work together to make a really great game. The world is huge and contains tons of content - content which actually feels carefully designed rather than just cut and paste to extend the game. This game comes very highly recommended - one tip, as a laptop user I found turning off anti aliasing improved the performance of the game 100%!

This was quite possibly the best game I purchased in 2008. Don't go into it anticipating an amazing story, but do expect many hours of fun exploring the different areas, finding new items to aid your hero and building the "perfect" army. Plenty of gameplay, nice graphics and multiple ways to develop your hero make it a no-brainer for fans of the original and/or the Heroes of Might & Magic games.

This game has become an absolute addiction for my husband and I. We've both played the game through a number of times as different characters and the random nature of the various enemies provides a challenge each time.

I'll come to the challenge aspect in a moment, but first let's look at the story. A story, to my mind, is one of the most important things in a game. If your game exists purely of shooting inanimate objects or blowing up buildings, then you're going to get bored very quickly ... either that or perhaps you're using your game to let off steam! Seriously, a good story gives you a reason to keep picking the game up again and again. A good storyline gives you a reason for blowing up those buildings and killing the monsters. Kings Bounty has a storyline spread across a number of different lands where you encounter a number of races, humans of varying occupations from the law-abiding to downright criminal, and monsters from all parts of the spectrum. The story is quite well written and is revealed in small chunks, which is quite clever and keeps you waiting for the end revelation. I won't reveal the actual story here, but suffice to say the first couple of main quests are pretty far removed from the final outcome.

The graphics are great, with amazing detail if you zoom in as you play. That mode of play can be quite irritating though, and you'll miss some details, along with hidden bonuses if you wander round the playing world at this "zoomed in" level. Best bet, is to play at a "halfway house" - not all the way out, but not all the way in either! That way, you'll get to see the little nuances of the game - the floating butterflies, the wandering insects, as well as get a full view of approaching monsters. There's also the random appearance of the signal to dig - I'll leave you to find out what that means - along with the various chests and hidden bonuses along the pathways.

So, the game holds great graphics, a good story and is relatively straightforward to play. I can't stand these games where you've got to take an entire degree before you can play effectively - you know the sort, the ones with endless side quests, almost unending functionality around magic and fighting skills - one's head is spinning even before you've got past the introduction in the manual! (If of course you read the manual!) Fortunately, King's Bounty can be played quite nicely without a manual or a PhD in astrophysics!

The one downside in my opinion is the number of monsters and battles that you need to go through and the limited availability of funds, especially early on in the game. I will own up here and now to the fact that I don't think I could have beaten/won the game if I hadn't cheated in terms of keeping my army well manned. It would either have taken soo long it would have been tedious - having to traipse back to the castle everytime I wanted to restock with my favourite troops. Or, I would have had to co

Wow, this game is amazing. If you're a fan of Heroes of Might and Magic, then this game is definitely for you. With excellent graphics, great dialog (for a Russian game, it sure has awesome translations!) and addictive gameplay, you can't really go wrong.

The combat system is essentially the same as the famous HoMM3's but with some subtle but important improvements. First, the interface is vastly superior, offering in-depth and informative mouseovers such as predicted damage and kills when casting a spell or attacking, movement ranges and turn orders. After playing KBTL, you will have trouble playing HoMM3 without the convenient additions to combat.

Some other core changes to the combat system include the ability to move and go in defense mode, wait, use abilities or use ranged attacks, if movement points are available, in one turn!

A key difference between KBTL and HoMM3 is the scope of the game. KBTL is all about one hero's path to glory while HOMM3 is more about a faction's path to glory. KBTL does not have multiplayer. It's purely single player and is excellent at that. There are plenty of fun and interesting quests you can take up that offer non-aggressive (!) solutions.

A final key difference between HOMM3 and KBTL is the removal of a major source of randomness involved in leveling your hero. You no longer get 1 random skill upon level-up but rather get runes (rage, mind and mana runes) that are spent to progress your hero through a "talent tree"-like leveling system. You still get a small random buff on level, too, such as a choice between +1 attack or +40 leadership.

Oh, speaking of Leadership... this is an interesting new mechanic that restricts the number of units you can have in your army. Choose your army carefully. You can no longer get a stack of 80000 vampires and steamroll the entire game :P

All the comparisons to Heroes of Might and Magic are valid, but there are some differences this game is more of an adventure with one hero than a map conquering strategy.

King's Bounty: the Legend is not just for fans of the Heroes of Might and Magic games, even though it is clearly related to that series. If you like your games to come stocked with a good story that is loaded with charm and humor and the good sense not to kill the flow of the game with relentless cut scenes, this is your game. If you like turn-based battles that allow for true tactical problem solving without the crushing minutia of hard-core wargames, you'll enjoy this fast-paced fantasy title. Tired of playing games that are poorly put together and feel like they were designed by non-gamers? You might want to try this game! This game is full of nice touches. Like setting up correctly on installation. Even the screen resolution was spot on from the first time I ran it. Other nice touches include being able to configure the game to skip the opening cinematic (by checking a box) and the easy contol scheme used by the game. King's Bounty was made by people who obviously love games. Russian people, to be exact, and therein lies the game's weakness. If you really want to call it a weakness. The translation from the original language is a bit rough in spots. It is quite noticeable and quite funny - to me - in it's own right. This game is more fun than any game I've played in years. Years!

Buy this game right now if you like turn based games. The combat is well balanced but breakable, the quests and world in general are engaging, the advancement elements are addictive, the graphics are excellent, the magic system is fun. There is nothing wrong with this game. I would buy it in a house, I would buy it for a mouse, I would buy it here or there, I would buy it anywhere.

I stumbled across this game while waiting for Sword of the Stars: AMoC to finish downloading, and I'm glad I did. I have fond memories of playing the original King's Bounty, and became hopelessly addicted to the Heroes of Might and Magic games that spawned from it.

From the first second I loaded up the game it was obvious that the developers loved the original King's Bounty as much, if not more, than I did. Every inch of this game is a faithful recreation and improvement to the simple game mechanics of the original game. The environments are lavishly detailed (not just the overhead world but the battle arenas as well), the battle system is superb and even makes fights not always about who has the most/better troops. The RPG character leveling is incorporated seamlessly into the game and allows for many different styles of gameplay (my warrior ended up more like a warrior/mage hybrid than anything else). I love the fact that they kept the leadership system from the original game that forces you to decide on what troops to hire, keep and complement each other against tough opponents. This is where the game really shines in my opinion. The game's difficulty on normal is not a breeze. Several times you will have to go up tough opponents and find a way to win (or in some cases, trick enemy stacks into an area where you can just avoid them). Losing a lot of troops can be just as fatal as losing a battle, as there are a limited number of recruits to buy. Hunting around the world for different troops to recruit can be a bit tedious, but doesn't detract from the gameplay too much. In one case, searching for new recruits led me to an undiscovered cave an lots of treasure!

There are a few problems with the game, but most of them are minor. The camera angles can get a bit quirky if you have the camera follow your character, and the mouse/camera control is slightly awkward. I was looking for a menu to customize the keyboard or camera controls but didn't find any. The dialogue looks like it was translated quickly in English, there's a plethora of spelling errors. The mini-maps are pretty but only point out very important locations, everything else you have to remember where things are (fortunately, you can add notes to the mini-maps for later use). None of this detracts from the enjoyment of the game, however. I got used to the camera and the dialogue is understandable and very detailed.

Minor flaws aside, this gem is sure to stay on my hard drive a long time. These developers deserve a lot of credit for their effort in refurbishing and restoring one of the classic games of this genre.

I wanted to finish the game before my review but after 40 hours of gameplay I am maybe only half-way through this immense and rich game. More importantly, the game has gotten no less exciting as I play through it. Because most of the non-quest elements of the game randomize each time you start a game, and because there are three character classes, I would anticipate that this game has at least 300 hours of play in it, possibly more.

While graphics and sound are very nicely, the depth and just extreme attention to detail in the game just gush with developer love. I feel bad for the developers because they have done ten times the amount of work needed to sell the game but because it is from an East European developer it will never get the recognition it deserves as one of the top three best strategy/RP games of the last five years. I would have paid at least $300 for this game so I feel guilty having paid only $40.

There is so much content in this game that trying to list it is really not possible here. Suffice it to say that the hundreds of multi-part quests will be keeping you busy and directed while you work on building new strategies and combinations of units, skills, spells, items and wives: ALL of which are customizable! Yes even the wives! I consider myself somewhat of a feminist but the wives/children/family system in this game is just so charmingly done that I think people on both ends of the political spectrum will find it a daring and really enjoyable feature. It is done tastefully (you have children by kissing your wife...) so there is nothing offensive here to taint younger players.

I have spent three years as a professional game reviewer and this game gets my highest ranking for depth, immersion, fun-factor, accessibility and innovation. It also marks the point at which (at least in this case) production values in Europe began exceeding those in the West.

This is an outstanding game, a mixture of beautiful 3D graphics and intelligent turn based fighting. I was hanging out for Disciples III but I think King's Bounty is possibily even better. The combat is reminiscent of HOMM V but the overall game is MUCH more fun. Highly recommended!

I have been waiting for this game for a long time and it was worth the wait. Any HOMM, Desciples, or Age Of Wonder fan will love this game. I've only been playing for a few hours and it is awesome.

A few gripes:

Combat speed should be a slider

A hot key to show spell effect on all units (It might be there I have not looked that hard)

and an auto refill troops. You will see what I mean (there called peasants for a reason) :)
