Thoroughly recommended to anyone who likes blowing things up, this game will give you hours of fun as you roam the island of Panau causing mayhem. I got over thirty hours of fun from following the plot and generally goofing off, but if you're a completionist there are many more hours of obliterating military bases to be had.

Beautiful graphics, great gameplay, tons of vehicles and crazy action stunts. Only disappointment is not being able to enter buildings, but the world is huge enough that it doesn't really matter.

Just Cause 2 review

By Tritherain posted 30th March 2012

A fun, action filled romp through a huge, open world. Just Cause 2 gives you a lot of freedom to explore a large island with just enough story to give you some justification for blowing up half of it. In addition to the handful of main story missions, there are numerous faction missions that you can complete. Pretty much any mission, or just running around and blowing up government targets, will earn you points to unlock new missions and equipment. The actual gameplay gives you a great feeling of mobility. Not only can you enter and control most any vehicle in the game, but you also start out with a grappling hook and parachute combination that helps you move around faster and climb to new heights.

The controls feel a little off when using a mouse/keyboard setup, the game was obviously designed for a controller. But it works well enough to still work if you don’t have one (or just prefer the precision of the mouse). If you want a third-person shooter/sandbox game that’s going to offer you oodles of content and fun and isn’t GTA, Just Cause 2 is one of the best choices you could make.

Fun for awhile...

By Valzaan posted 28th March 2012

Just Cause II is quite enjoyable for awhile, though eventually you do get through the story only to go back to doing what you were doing before- breaking things and upsetting people who do not like broken stuff. The graphics and features of the game are the strong(er) points of the game, as is the sandbox aspect, but one can only handle so many explosions- even if they are pretty. Enjoy defying physics and everything else, though.

One thing that was especially annoying, though, was that you couldn't upgrade the grappling hook- it would have been nice to upgrade its damage just like the other weapons...

very good game, much more fun than the first overall, some control mappings are a bit awkward for example space bar opening parachute instead of being handbrake, this has caused my death many times. but this game comes action packed with lots of guns and places to fight.

although some missions can be a bit repetitive, and it can be a pain traveling to destinations until you have a faster means of transportation.

I loved this game! I would recommend it to anyone interested for sure. There was so much to do and so many places to go. It does get repetitive after a while though. But trust me, you'll be playing this game for a while before you get bored of it! I look forward to the third Just Cause (it they are making it) because I'm sure they'll learn from what made this game repetitive and solve it in that one.

This game has a lot of replay value thats for sure. It is sort of like grand theft auto in that you ride around doing missions as you choose and can pretty much blow up and destroy anything you want. You unlock weapons and vehicles as you go. Its a fun game.

Just Cause 2: a very well made game!

People who like the gta series of games will love this as is along the same lines as it but also has a lot of different features. One of my favourites is the grapple and the quick and cool travel is gives the player and how it works seamlessly with the parachute for long distance travelling. The black market is also a very nice feature as it allows you to get equipment quickly and easily without having to fiddle with cheats or search for ages trying to find a shop to get it from. Overall I think it is a great free roam game that will appeal to many people as you can either play through the story and different gang quests or simply just mess around playing around with no real objective and just having some fun.

Great game to cause mayhem with. It is fun for anyone: it has shooting, item collecting, a great variety of land to explore, and mostly importantly insane explosions. Pick this game up, it has a lot more game time than most game out there.

This isn't much of a game more so than a sandbox in a sandbox environment. It's extremely non-linear, but unfortunately to such a degree as to lose all kind of story. But from what I've gathered from the developers, it's not intended to be a heavily story driven game. The downside of this being that after 5 or so hours, the game will feel extremely monotonous.

Don't get me wrong, the grappling hook and parachute is a awesome combination, and there are hours of fun to be had with just it. Not to mention the extreme amount of vehicles, though they handle decently. But as I said, it falls flat when it comes to story and any incentive to actually continue doing the repetitive missions.

Recommended pick up price: around €10.

If I had to describe this game in one sentence I would say: "It is like GTA but with more freedom". And this is the best description of this game IMHO :)

This gameplay is like crazy B-class action movie, and your character, Rico Rodrigez, is just like Tarantino's figure. You travel around a huge island, taking missions and making "chaos" by destroying government buildings (like fuel tanks, gas stations, silos, power generators etc). And making this mess is most of fun that game offers, because the storyline is not very catchy, at least after my 6h of playing.

4 star rating is my personal opinion, because I prefer games with more focus on the story. But after attaching dictator statue to a truck and destroying it by pull, I had so much fun, so I am returning to this sandbox piece of fun every time I need to relax.

The only thing I didn't like were using a keyboard/mouse. It is really hard to control the guy that way. I recommend buying a controller (Xbox 360 for PC, is the best).

Oh my God this game is fantastic!!! So much to do in this tropical paradise, from causing chaos & mayhem just for the sake of it, to exploring & soaking in the beauty of this game. Truly a great experience. The only criticism is the story, which is weak, but as it is such a small element of the game, you won't even mind.

Just Cause 2 is an epic successor to the awesomeness of the first game. In every sense of the word, it has improved on everything good about the first game and made itself a *great* game. The open-world, the do-almost-anything-you-want-to atmosphere, the weapon play, the scenery -- it's all there for you to enjoy. If you're running a nice PC and run the game on all of the highest settings you'll enjoy it even more just for the sheer beauty, which I sometimes find myself standing around doing once in a while.

The game is worth the price anywhere you find it, but I got it for $5 a short while ago through this site. I wish it had multi-player, but some modders have begun some work on that some time ago. Whether it'll ever be completed is beyond me, but its lack of MP doesn't hold this game's awesomeness back.

Get it, you will most definitely love the game's style and gameplay.

Violent deconstruction of a Third World country

By hessan posted 13th December 2011

Don't get me wrong, this game can be fun. It has some pretty great graphics and raiding the airport on this island is likely going to be one of the most awesome experiences you will ever have. However the missions are very repetitive and predictable. I wish I could actually get into this game and play it for hours, but the slow grind of getting to mission to mission, which are in turn wash-and-repeat, can get frustrating and I personally can only take it in limited doses.

Weapon of Mass Destruction

By Daedalus256 posted 6th December 2011

Seriously, I can't think of a better way to describe this game.

The game itself out-does GTA-style destruction by giving you lots of rewards for causing said destruction, causing general mayhem and basically getting in trouble with the locals. Sound fun? With all of the achievements, explosions vehicles, weapons and missions, you're going to be playing this for a long time to come.

I haven't played a game that is plain fun in a while. I'll be honest: the storyline, the dialogue and the characters and laughable sometimes but the gameplay is so good that you won't even care !

The game has a certain blockbuster summer movie feel. There are explosions, gunfights, jumping out of planes and helicopters, speed-boat rides... the whole package.

The island the game is set in is absolutely HUGE, and i really mean it- HUGE. There are deserts, and mountains, cities and villages, the diversity of the enviroment is amazing... and it is all backed up with amazing graphics. When you get into it, you wont want to leave !

Once the story is finished, the fun never ends.

You can do just about anything here. With the mods for the PC installed, this is literally just a high definition garrys mod.

Though some story missions can be much of the same stuff, in between story missions (If you actually go through with the story) there is chance for so much fun.

On the up side, there are 3 stories to do, so you are ALWAYS doing something.

Very fun game! It allows you to free-roam, like GTA. You can play through the story/game or you can go off an experience the world. Much more vehicle interaction then GTA, which I've always liked. Not just cars either.

Paying the 3 extra bucks for all the DLCs was worth it. They added some enjoyment to free roam. Obviously they aren't necessary to the game.

p.s. You CAN activate this DLC on steam! As well as the game!

This is, in my opinion, on par with GTA. It's different, though. The focus here is on explosions, ludicrous, action-movieesque feats of humorously ridiculous chaos.

The story isn't bad, it has its moments, but the fun here is just playing around.

One con is a slight feeling of recycledness in areas, especially some of the non-story missions.

THIS MECHANICAL BEAST OF A TOOL is unrivaled against ANY TOOL YOU'LL FIND IN ANY GAME. Srsly, this hook rocks bro. The game is a great time-dispenser and more importantly, FUN AS HEO. If you're looking to buy the DLC, go ahead, but if you don't want any, there's always mods. Get this game as soon as possible, it's 75% OFF. (╯°□°)╯︵ ɐǝʎ ʞɔnℲ

If you don't own this game, buy it immediately. It is by far the best, most ridiculous sandbox game out right now.

The story line isn't that great and if you simply play to do the missions it can get repetitive. However, the appeal of the game is to explore and blow everything up!

It's pick-up-and-destroy free roam gameplay is addictive, and the amount of detail put into the game will have players discovering new things, and experimenting with new things for weeks to come after the purchase.

You may also want to get the Complete edition as well, which includes all the DLCs. However, if you only want a few select DLCs, I recommended getting the Black Market Aerial DLC and the Black Market Boom DLC.

I think what I like most is the spear-hook platforming element. Every other open-world game gets boring too quick. This one has held my attention for a long time now just because I get to jump and climb up stuff with the spear-hook. Great game!

Just Cause 2 is a thrilling game in most aspects. It'll keep you entertained for a while with its open world dynamics and its hook-based gameplay. The story itself isn't good but for this game it really doesn't matter, since the fun part is to just explore the astoundingly beautiful island of Panau, from end to end, to discover every single place on it and do whatever you like on the way. I can tell you, you won't regret buying this one!

Great game. Can run around for hours having mindless fun, blowing stuff up, stealing helicopters, playing with the grappling hook, and exploring. The island in which the game is set is huge, and you'll have a hard time getting to missions across the map without stealing a plane.

The only downside to the game are the repetitive missions. Other than that I highly recommend this game if you're just looking for a sandbox to mess around in.

By robvp posted 5th September 2011

The game starts out pretty nice, its fun and fast paced, sort of like a GTA with a grapling hook.

The setting is huge, lots of islands but the transportation is varied and decent.

A downpoint is that the missions get repetitive though, you can only do so many stronghold take overs or "find x and bring it to x" missions before they get boring.

The freeroaming is what i liked the most, just running around causing some mayhem, i liked completing the military settlements.

Game is well worth the money.

Shooter with tons of boom.

By Mundilfare posted 26th August 2011

I'm not a twitch gamer, will never buy a console, cannot understand how anyone wants to use a gamepad. That said, Just Cause 2 will live for a long time on my computer. Not because of in-depth story or great narrative, since the game simply does not care about things like that. No, it's because I always wanted a shooter where I can just go around and you know, shoot stuff without worrying about levels, story, if I progressed far into the game where it got hard for casual gaming, silly boss fights etc.

Just Cause 2 is perfect for living out aggression. The basic gameplay is the same throughout the game, the intensity increases as you go along, but nothing too steep. The completely open world makes it very easy to just jump into. It is also a very, very beautiful game, the environment (running max settings without lag on my nothing-spectacular computer from '09) is just stunning, at least from a little distance. Someone said on a forum that one of the fun parts is that there is no wall. Everything you can see, you can go to. You can spend endless amounts of time just traveling (or you can steal a plane or a helicopter, or get a ride from the 'buddy'). It is boom-boom gaming at its best. Blowing up oil rigs has never been this fun!

This game is so well designed that time after time in my playthrough I thought, "Man, wouldn't it be great if this game had X?" and then, lo and behold, X appears, like the albatross to the Ancient Mariner, except in a totally good way that doesn't cause the mass suffering and death of my shipmates. Just Cause 2 is a very well executed sandbox game with a cheesy plot which fits the cheesy gameplay. The game is fun on it's own but it becomes a whole new game when you download some mods. Fantastic, stupid, bombastic fun.

For me, the perfect relaxtion game for 3 reasons:

1) The cathartic appeal of blowing everything up, possibly in a helicopter and possibly with a quad rocket launcher.

2) I actually find the near endless number of races very relaxing, blasting down huge roads in gorgeous scenery and jumping into another vehicle whenever I cause a catastrophic crash which ALWAYS results in a lovely huge firey explosion!

3) Hiking/driving/gliding across the islands just looking and exploring, there are so many gorgeous things in the game that don’t appear on the map at all, gives a wonderful sense of adventure. And is even more fun with the jets that attach to the glider!

Also good to mention that this game uses SteamWorks, so if you like having your games on Steam all you need do is put the Serial Key in and can download it from there.

There's nothing quite like the feeling of having 100+ hours of game time when all you've done is the mandatory tutorial. The system requirements for the game are pretty beefy, and there's a strange lag when you man a turret, but these issues are very minor compared to the joy of tying someone to your helicopter and dragging them across the sky.

Just Cause 2 needs more destructable enviroments.

By mattyjw posted 14th August 2011

Just Cause 2 is best played from the air, after playing Red Faction Guerilla I found the game enjoyable but the inability to destroy anything that isn't emblazoned with the Panau Star was a little dissapointing.

Where Just Cause 2 is great si the sceneery and the look of the island. The Panau is massive and the only real way to get around and appreciate the developers hard work is to steal a jet or to a lesser extent a helicopter. You can't make everything explode but the things you can usually go up with satisfying pyrotechnics and loud bangs.

The story works to give you an excuse to destroy everything although the missions can become repetative so this game is probably best used as a palette cleanser between the deeper games in your collection. It like most console ports would be best played with a control pad although KB/Mouse is entirely feasible and enjoyable.

Just Cause 2 is a gmae that if your system can ddo it justice will provide spectacular vistas along with absolute chaos.

FUN, thats it, after years of seeing games feel more like work than games, i enjoy a fun game, not a perfect one, but fun, an over the top intentionally cliche story, with over the top action scenes(almost all the time) and a world " two times the size of the known universe" to destroy. It is true it gets repetitive and the sensation of the copy paste brush gets on to you after some hours, but it is without a doubt a fun game. as a game should be.

Huge sandbox game with some repetitive elements

By timeofthewolf posted 5th August 2011

Just Cause 2 is a surveyor's dream. Its expansive world is roughly 4 times larger than World of Warcraft, and 12 times larger than Farcry 2. Combine this size with an impressive draw distance and attractive scenery, and the result is a game that dares you to explore as far as the eye can see. For most people, however, the fun of Just Cause 2 isn't the destination, but how creatively you get there. The blend of vehicles, gadgets, explosions and various other less-than-lifelike mechanics crash together into a satisfying sandbox soup. This freedom to cause chaos however you see fit to get the job done makes up for the game's more cookie-cutter elements, such as the buildings in most military bases, and gameplay of faction missions. Some of the less forgivable aspects include the awful, ponderous voice acting (as most lines are delivered slower than molasses), and the difficulty of later AI resistance to the protagonist's antics. Most of the gameplay is right there in the demo, so I recommend giving that a try.

A great free-roaming game that is set in communist Panau. The gameplay is great, the story is alright, replay value is high, the graphics are well done, the characters are decent, and the style is cool. A great recommendation for those who have played games of the Grand Theft Auto series.

Just Cause 2 is what gamming with modern machines is all about. Its stunning graphics in the vast open world inspire gamming as much as the fast paced action of the gameplay itself. Take a flight in a chopper to a tropical island or storm a stronghold with a rocketlauncher and machinegun. There is no doubt Ill be playing this one for quite sometime.

Just Cause was a great sandbox game. Allowing wonderful freedom yet directing enough to keep the story going. JC 2 expands and improves on this premise. The scope is enormous, and the story alone will take you several days to complete. Be wary, this game is a processor/graphical hog that will eat anything but the best machines for lunch on the higher settings.

Never plyed the first one, so this was my first time with the just cause series. To start off this is no Grand Theft Auto if anything it reminds me of the mercenaries games than anything. The thing with this game is the story is basically non-exsistent which isn't that much of a bother as the brilliant thing about this game is you can just have hours of endless fun and destruction which is fun just to be able to have a mess around.

This game is silly-crazy FUN to play!

You have a humongous island to explore, and more than a hundred vehicles to aid you in that endeavor.

Oh, yeah … You get to blow stuff up.

LOTS of stuff.

EVERYWHERE.

It never gets old.

Did I mention the awesome grappling hook?

This game is amazing. First off, it has amazing graphics. A storyline that will keep you busy, since there are three factions to work for. You can skydive from massive heights, and pull out a parachute, and still shoot a a foe. And, you can have fun swinging around and traveling with your trusty grappling hook. You can grab onto cars, helicopters, buildings, people, and even palm trees. And, who doesn't love shooting at people following you, while standing on the roof of a moving car? That is why I gave this game, five stars out of five.

Just Cause 2 is a great action 3rd person shooter, with a free to explore world and tons of things to do. The protagonist, Scorpion, is an American secret agent working in the Panau islands, which government have just being seized by a hostile dictator. Your mission is to cause chaos and destruction to destabilize the new government.

Scorpion is equipped with a hook and a parachute that can be activated at any time, which makes you feel somehow like a superhero, flying around buildings and doing impossible stunts, like hijack vehicles in motion. The shooting is OK, although the aim assist wasn't really necessary on the PC.

Besides all that, there is a lot of vehicles to try on. The air and water vehicles are pretty responsive and fun to drive (specially the helicopters). I didn't care much about the land vehicles. The mechanics felt sloppy and unrealistic. At high speeds, is pretty easy to lose control and, when that happens, your car just rolls over like a plastic toy.

The story of the game is pretty generic, and utterly, irrelevant. This game is all about wrecking havoc on the vast territory of Panau.

Just Cause 2 fells like a GTA on vacation, with looser laws of physics and more relaxed story. I definitely recommend it.

Better than the GTA games and the Saint's Row games in it's ability to put you in a fun environment, give you cool toys, and let you have at it. Whoever came up with the infinite grappling hook and parachute deserves a huge bonus.

Great game, vast island to explore, varied vehicles, and some crazy things you can do with the grappling hook. The missions CAN become a little repetitive if all you're doing is jumping from mission to mission though.

If you got GTA just for causing havoc, then get this game, since it should provide you with more than enough to satisfy your destructive needs.

Just Cause 2 is a very well-made open-world game. The game gives you quite a bit of freedom, without pestering the player as the Grand Theft Auto games tend to do. The vehicles and grappling hook mechanics provide quite a bit of fun to people willing to experiment with them. If you're a fan of explosions, you owe it to yourself to play this game.

This is a game where you can pretty much do whatever you want in terms of stealing vehicles, drive around in a big world, or why not fly or take a boat?. Think Grand Theft Auto when it comes to the sandbox aspect of the game. Except you can destroy certain buildings/constructions in the towns that you go around in.

In the game you go around and take missions from different factions in the game when you feel like it. It's a free roaming style of game.

One issue I have is that it feels like it was made for consoles. I assume it handles better with a controller, that's what I have heard. It's a third person shooter with auto aim pretty much. It's not necessarily bad but it has a different kind of feel to it than I am used to when it comes to shooters.

The story is not very good and overall lacking. This game has a sort of GTA feel to it. You can free roam wherever you want and blow up almost anything. The controls are pretty good but the overall feel of the game is a little loose. Most of the vehicles control terribly and the AI is not very smart. This review makes the game sound terrible but it's actually pretty enjoyable. You will definitely spend most of your time running around and jumping off of high things, doing tricks and what not. I wouldn't buy this game at full price but if it is on sale then go for it. I got it for $5 and I would say it was worth it. Have fun!

Very cool game. I think it is one if the best I have ever played. Fast action, good story, much missions and things to do and destroy. Even not that bad it looks with reality in the game. You can play this game for hours, it has great sandbox - huge island to move around.

I really enjoy this game and I am still playing it. I think I can recommend it at all, because it is really worth it.

As someone who never actually played the first game I jumped into this second one just looking for some fun. The story isn't good but you're not playing this game for the story. Playing this game is some of the most fun I've had in a sandbox type game since GTA 3. Just going around blowing up random things is great and they introduce new ways to cause chaos throughout the game.

I recommend this game to anyone on the fence, just don't expect a masterpiece of storytelling. Go into it expecting some mindless fun that you can spend hours doing what you feel like.

I've played Just Cause 1 before and even that game is already a very large open ended game, where you can travel through all the cities, villages and mountains without even a loading in between. Unfortunately, there's not much to do besides shooting enemies and collecting stuffs which doesn't even give quite a decent reward.

Amazingly, the sequel has exceeded the predecessor by 200%, giving the players MANY quests AND rewards for completing them, and it may even be one of the best, if not THE best open ended game up to date.

Story is pretty simple. Rico's back and this time he'll be destroying the corrupt government of Panau by causing mayhem and destruction in hundreds, and I mean HUNDREDS of places, which varies from a whole city, oil rigs, villages etc without even a major lag inbetween. Of course, you got to have an up to date computer to play it cause it may be overwhelming for the old systems, but impressive that this game can show THAT many detail perfectly.

It can be overwhelming at first, which is a good thing cause it will give you lots of replayabilities and methods to use to destroy everything and collecting upgrade kits in each places, which is demonstrated in the crazy trailers. You can purchase weapons and vehicles while also upgrading them through collectibles in each of the settlements you conquer. Here's a tip: when fighting enemies, aim for the head. And when the whole army is overwhelming you with gunfire, use the grappling hook to get away as far as possible, or use it to steal enemy helicopter, which will give a pretty interesting hijacking mini game.

The grappling hook featured in the game is a lot more useful that the previous game where this time you can also hook through walls instead of vehicles, which will put Spider-man as a competition. You can get to many places by just using the grappling hook and a parachute quicker than using cars and more efficient than using planes.

The developer of the game is very thoughtful in putting the name for every settlements in the game with Malaysian language, which will be very funny if you translate them to English. Eg: Kem Sungai Sejuk means the soothing river camp and the Kota Istana Purba means the stone age castle city, and that's just 2 out of hundreds. Hahahaha.

Voice acting is pretty good with many of the people speaks with Malay accents, but Bolo Santusi, one of the people that will give you missions, is the most Malay of all the people. She does sound like my aunt in Malaysia a lot, and people may either hate the accent or think of it as nostalgic, especially those of you from that region.

Overall, it's an amazing game with lots of replayabilities that exceeds Just Cause 1 tremendously.

Just Cause 2 is a strange game in my opinion. It isn't strange for having a strange setting or anything like that, it is strange because I ACTUALLY LOVE THIS GAME. I know you probably are thinking well, that is a strange comment to make but it will all become very clear. See the reason being is that to get into a game such as Just Cause there has to be believable graphics, and nice audio work to keep you immersed into the world. The first is done very nicely as the visuals are FANTASTIC, however the audio is very much so lacking. The MAIN thing being the voice-over work and the corny one liners every single character will spout off, however some of the car effects and explosives made me cringe a little bit as well. Trust me though I wouldn't nit pick about audio unless it would truly atrocious in some areas. But anyways I will move onto the most important part now.

Actual gameplay! The gameplay in this game is fantastic to put it simply, the missions CAN get repetitive however the open world nature of this game means boredom is your fault as the player cause you choose what you want to do. You can do pretty much anything with little to no repercussions, it has the Grand Theft Auto feel to it in that aspect. Its a great game to get lost in, not doing missions or progressing at all just causing massive mayhem (which coincidentally causes you to progress as well :P ). I think this game is worth every penny for what it is... a fantastic sandbox game that you can really get behind!

Verdict from my perspective, get it as soon as possible. I find it very much so worth the money.

Just Cause 2 is one of those games that tries to be GTA IV but ends up being something else. Usually that something else isn't really worth the game time, BUT this time the cards were set just right for it to be an interesting and fun action oriented third person shooter.

The story is already recycled as you might expect: you are some bad ass CIA guy that is sent on a top secret mission to disrupt government installations and usher a revolution, on the small tropical island of Panau.

You see the current president of Panau is not so inclined to do business with the Americans and this will not do. Top the American intervention with the daily life of a population under strict dictatorial law and you get a powder-keg that is just waiting to go off.

And off it goes once the main character starts messing with the infrastructure of the island. And WHAT an island! It's so huge you need several minutes to traverse it in a JET fighter and has varying landscapes from beautiful lush jungles to the snowy peaks of the mountain range. And it is all jam-packed with things that go BOOM!

As you might expect, such a sandbox game requires some form of transportation. No need to worry, because you have all that you need from motorboats and small frigates, through cars and tanks, ending at helicopters and jet fighters. And of course there are many variations of each!

This and many more is presented on a great game engine that creates one of the most beautiful graphic experiences of the last few years with NO loading screens and waiting.

And because it is a sandbox game you get to do whatever you want, whenever you want (BUT not without it's consequences). You can do the missions and it's alright, but if you want a little action you can take an armed helicopter (armed with mini-gun and unlimited rockets) and wreak havoc on the small island paradise (watch out for the immediate government retaliation though).

So basically it's a fun and entertaining game to relax you after a day at school/work!

Score Points:

Graphics: 9

Sound: 10

Story: 8

Game-play: 9

Experience: 9

Fun factor: 10

Overall score: 9

Just Cause 2 review

By bfflogamez posted 3rd April 2011

As of early 2011, Just Cause 2 is one of the best game experiences you can treat yourself to as a PC Gamer, particularly if you have a higher end video card. At its highest settings, Just Cause 2 is absolutely breathtaking.

I had played just a little of Just Cause 1 on the Xbox, and while as a big fan of "open world" games I admired what they were trying to do, it felt sort of amateurish and half-baked. Well, not Just Cause 2 -- with this one the developers have really come into their own and established a truly impressive franchise. There is nothing "b grade" about the feel of this game. I expected the PC game to feel lightweight in the manner of a typical "console port," but there is nothing "console port"-ish about it. I was blown away by how polished, visually beautiful, and deeply immersing this game is. It not only stands on equal footing with other venerable open-world action franchises -- it actually outdoes them and sets the bar to a new high. It is a triumph, and the PC version blows away its console counterparts.

On PC the gameplay mechanics do take a little getting used to, and you may be doing some keyboard/mouse remapping to find the control scheme that works best for you. And beyond that, getting the hang of the many cool stunt maneuvers you can perform takes a bit of practice as well. But it's worth it. Once you master them, you have an endless-seeming, lush, and nicely varied terrain to explore, a yawning archipelago of mountains, villages, cities, highways, canals, military bases, and more. The weather changes, the sun rises and sets with beautiful effect, and there is never a shortage of ways in which to entertain yourself. It is definitely the kind of game in which you can kill hours simply wandering about, grappling your way to new unexplored heights or depths, tracking down new vehicles, saving money for weapons upgrades, clearing out remote little military bases, etc.

What I really enjoy about Avalanche's approach to game design in JC2 is that they concentrate on making it great fun from the get-go. You don't have to wait for the "good stuff" -- you can do inredibly cool things and have a tremendous amount of freedom right from the start. There are two tutorial missions before they set you loose, which introduce you to the various gameplay mechanics, but while I normally hate tutorial missions, these were actually great fun and very natural feeling; I even replayed them a couple times.

As I played into the main game, again and again I was impressed by the tremendous degree of detail in the gameworld. Even underwater, you'll find pleasing coral reefs and various fish swimming about. It is exciting to look around at the game's amazing vista of mountains and water and jungles and cities, and know that there is nothing you are seeing that you can't go explore at any time.

So yes, I can only give this game my strongest recommendation. Beautiful graphics, physics, and atmosphere; huge open world; total freedom; good gameplay mechanics (once you get the hang of them); and just plain fun to play. Well worth the $30 I paid.

.

Having bought the original Just Cause back at release, I was very pleasantly surprised when I started up Just Cause 2 - the sequel improves in almost every way. The game is more polished, there's more variety in missions (although perhaps not much more), and combat feels tighter and better controlled.

The change to the grappling hook, which allows you to attach objects to each other, opens up a lot of possibilities for carnage (attaching cars to trees as they drive past at speed, connecting things to jets, etc), making it a viable weapon and not just useful for moving yourself at high speed.

In short, if you enjoyed the first (and if you didn't because you thought it was buggy or unpolished) you will enjoy Just Cause 2 also.

As a final note, the whole "C.I.A. agent saving these poor countries from evil dictators" that never quite sat 100% comfortably with me in the first game is very toned down in the second.
