Jagged Alliance review

This is one of favourites games. The objective is to recapture an island with the help of some mercenaries. Every merc speak his/her own language, has special abilities, wages, can level up and even likes and dislikes other mercenaries (be ready for surprises). Also you can hire some cannon fodder to protect the land that your are conquering but you will need your "expendables" to do the hard work so keep them alive and train them. This game like xcom will make you hold your breath every time you open a door or a window. Expect bobby traps blowing in your face and some bloody fight. You will hate that guy that kill your best men, and yes, you will be loading the game many times.

There's more than meets the eye

This game is a true challenge and one of the most rewarding I have ever faced as a gamer, killing the last guy in a sector after a tough struggle and seeing the members of my group become more and more skilled was priceless.

A lot of patience is needed and people who get frustrated easily should look elsewhere, but for people who love to carefully plan each and every move, maybe laughing when that apparently useless mercenary is able to save that beast who was rashly left in the open, this game is a must have.

Now if you excuse me, I have an island to recapture.

A classic!! Patience is a must in highly tactical games like this, but those who manage to put in a little time and thought will feel very rewarded after completing the various game objectives. Graphics are obviously dated, but the gameplay still feels almost as fresh as it did back in the good old days. I particularly enjoy the RPG aspect where you can level up your soldiers. I'd definitely recommend playing this one before Jagged Alliance 2, though, as the slicker presentation and more fluid gameplay of the sequel eclipses this game's experience quite a bit.

Jagged Alliance is a mixture of both tactical gameplay where you have to control various people and has rpg elements too the characters can level up stats etc. The story plays out as you complete different missions, objectives. The game can get pretty difficult for some objectives, the has game tons of mercenaries to hire to help you out. The game requires a lot of planning and is a classic of the jagged alliance series, good game overall.

Still great, even if it is from 1994!

Graphics: It's an almost 20 year old game, so of course it looks rather bad. But who plays games like these for graphics anyway?

Sound: The sound effects are well done, every weapon has its own unique sound. The best part though, is that every single one of the 60 mercs you can hire has his\her own voice and personality. So besides the grunts you won't here the same lines from every character.

Gameplay: This is the reason to get JA. The turn-based strategy is both challenging and addicting. You can have up to 8 different mercs (who level up RPG style), scavenge for supplies, and can go about every objective in anyway you see fit. You have to capture enemy territory and manage the island to get enough money to support your operations. The only thing I dislike is that fact you can not buy weapons from anywhere. It seems strange that a highly respected and funded mercenary organization has no access to any kind of weapons. Everything you get must be taken from the enemy, even if you have $50,000 with nothing to do with.

Overall if you like old DOS games or are just look for a fun strategy game this is one you will not want to miss out on.

****BE WARNED**** GamersGate does NOT tell you, but if you're running on Windows Vista/7 you WILL have to download a DOS emulator to get the game to run and install (I posted a tutorial to get it working on Game Tutor if you are having trouble).
