Harbinger

Rating: 3.4 (70 votes cast)

Harbinger is a single-player action / RPG set in a fantastic science fiction universe.  As one of three distinct character types, players explore the world of Harbinger – journey to the far reaches of space, battle unique foes never before seen in any medium, discover powerful new weapons and alien technologies, and uncover the dark secrets buried within the massive starship’s steel walls.

Story:

Under the Overlord’s ruthless control, Harbinger’s shadow has fallen across countless worlds.  Ravaged by endless conflict, the lumbering war machine carries her scars like trophies.  Where lesser ships have fallen, Harbinger stands: a monument to her master’s destructive appetites.

But within her cold walls the old alliances are fracturing.  Today, the Overlord’s dominance is threatened from all corners. The corruptive Vantir, first and oldest aboard Harbinger, continue to spread like a rampant infection throughout the ship.  The tribal Scintilla, placated for decades with false promises and half-truths, are once again rising to take the blood oaths of their ancestors.  But it’s the newcomers that pose the greatest threat here.  The bug-like Cimicidae have arrived and with them a wave of change that threatens to rip this ship apart.

That is where you come in.  A member of a small raider community, these corridors are the only home you’ve known.  Living on scraps with enemies on all sides. Death is always a misstep behind.  Sometimes you do the Overlord’s dirty work.  Sometimes you do your own.  We live by unspoken laws down here and the bloodhungry are never far behind.  This is your destiny.  The choices you make now will effect everything from here on.  Choose wisely.

Key Features:

Unique science fiction setting.  Nothing in Harbinger has been seen before in books, on television or in movies.

Unmatched artistic detail.  Harbinger's character and background animations are pushed to unparalleled extremes.

Easy to use interface.  Harbinger's interface has been streamlined to be attractive to the mainstream gamer.

Event-driven storyline with each game lasting between twenty and twenty-five hours.  The player's actions drive the story, so no two games of Harbinger will unfold in the same manner.

Highly interactive environments. Harbinger's hostile world can be effectively manipulated to overcome its many obstacles.

Advanced graphics engine.  Harbinger uses 3D acceleration to support advanced particle effects, colored lighting and highly detailed, runtime anti-aliased characters.

Unpredictable AI.  Harbinger's enemies patrol realistically, interact with the background, react to threats believably and don't simply wait for the player to attack.

Over seventy levels built from five large and diverse tile sets.

Over sixty-five unique enemies including six extremely challenging bosses.

Three playable characters complete with unique strengths, weaknesses, equipment and play-styles.

Over two hundred fifty items for the players to find and use. These include upgradable guns, blades, gauntlets, mines, amplifiers, and cameras that can be used to defeat Harbinger's many enemies.

Dynamic non-player characters.  NPCs in Harbinger have their own drives and personalities that cause them to affect the world in meaningful ways.

Harbinger review

By PandaL posted 18th February

Harbinger indeed plays like a "Sci-Fi Diablo", with a bit more dialog. Thanks to the good formula, the gameplay is actually quite solid. The voice acting again deserve some credits. Overall the game is stable, but it can get a bit repetitive overtime. Though I don't like its graphic style, it does offer a lot of detail and quite a good atmosphere. The environment does lack variaties, which does not help the repetitiveness. Overall it is a enjoyable experience for a while, but it lacks something to make it outstanding.

Underrated

This is a nice, underrated gem that can be adequately and succinctly described as "Sci-Fi Diablo". It uses the same formula as Blizzard's classic and gets it right. The graphics look still nice on today's computers, and the voice acting is well done.

As has been said below, the game runs on Windows 7 even though that operating isn't listed as compatible, you just have to apply the procedure described in SpyWeb's review further below. That done, the game installed and ran perfectly on both my Windows installations (one at 32, one at 64 bit).

Click. Click. Click. Click. Click. That's what it sounds like to play Harbinger. Is that bad, no, is it good? Eh. At the start of the game you pick one of three character/classes a tanky robot, a health regening fembot or a fast moving male human. Each has a different starting story and missions however they all start in the same location with the same npc. The base story is you're on a space ship, bad things are happening, that's about it. As far as game play, you click... alot. Click to move, click to attack, click to open chest, click to pick up items, click to activate switches, click to.... Sigh, my index finger hurt just thinking about it. Graphics are PSX/DOS era level, which is to say, not good but not terrible. Voice acting is not good, the fembot, as I call her, has the best voice actor and is probably the most fun class to play, although they seem to just throw money at the tank class, I guess that's balance? Maybe? Probably not. I can't seem to decide if the game is for hard-core rpg fans only or only for those who hasn't played a rpg. Either way, it's only so-so at best. All and all, if you can get this cheap, go for it for 2,000 blue coin it's not bad but any over that, I'd say skip it, It's much to shallow of a game that takes itself too seriously.

I played this game way back when because it was a demo that came on some computer (was it a pentium iv for costco?). I could never remember the name of this game but when I saw the cover art I remembered it immediately and downloaded it. I'm surprised there hasn't been a well-done version of 'Diablo-in-space' game (at least the few I've played haven't been that great). This one is probably the closest to capturing that original Diablo feel. Too bad the gameplay is repetitive (not any real special skills to use or level, just equipment and stats), even by Diablo standards. I had fun with it for a couple days but it sadly just couldn't hold my attention for longer. The game does have excellent writing but just can't get over the really repetitive shoot shoot shoot shoot shoot shoot...

The game looked like it was going to be very interesting. The screenshots seemed decent. Now, if only I could have gotten it to run in any of the three machines I installed it on (7 64bit, 7 32bit and Vista Premium) then maybe I would have rated it better than a 1.

This works perfectly with Windows 7 64bit. All you need to do to install: in the downloaded game folder, right click on the Harbinger.msi file, then properties, compatibility tab, run in compatibility mode for: A previous version of Windows. Then apply, then you must run the msi file. That's all.

A "dungeon crawler", hack and slash game with RPG elements, set inside a huge alien spaceship. Good sci fi elements, with controls similar to Space Siege. Good graphics for its time, and good overall mechanics. It's not the best game of its type, but if you like sci-fi a lot, you will enjoy this game more than others. For the low price you can find it now days, it's a steal.
