Fate of Hellas review

By testikron posted 29th July 2011

Looks good but plays bad. I wanted to give this game a chance but it just fails in many ways. Which is a shame because it brings some cool stuff to the table. For instance you can customize your soldiers equipment before you train them. Swapping out gear affects the price and effectiveness of your units. You also don't train cavalry units individually, you instead train horses and mount your soldiers on them. Enemies can even be killed and you can commandeer their horses. Although the execution is very clumsy and time consuming, much like the rest of the game.

The game relies HEAVILY on resource collection. While wood and food is plentiful and easy to maintain gold isn't, and everything takes lots of gold. In order to get even a small force you need a fortune. So the game consists of you trying to hold off enemy attacks, who seems to have limitless gold, while you struggle to secure another mineshaft.

For a game being about Spartans your soldiers are incredibly weak. The only resemblance being in the name of the game. While the game play tries to come off as classic age of empires it feels unpolished. There are too many good RTS's out there to waste your time with this one.

Fate of Hellas review

Fate of Hellas, also known as Great War Nations: The Spartans and Ancient Wars: Sparta, is a throwback RTS. Its gameplay comes straight from the late '90s, with simple base building and a focus on tactical combat. The major distinguishing feature is the weapon-based unit construction system, in which you build custom units for your side and equip them with items from the battlefield.

The graphics are reasonably good; bright and colorful (and gory) but slightly dated at this point. The voiceovers are rather poor, and the story is boring. You're the Greeks, and you fight the Egyptians and Greeks. Simple. There are some good ideas in here, but the execution is lacking.

It's worth a play at a low price ($10 being about the highest price it's worth) but won't keep you occupied for very long.
