Rating: 4.5 (110 votes cast)

Smashing up the competition! Developed by Bugbear Entertainment, FlatOut is one of the most spectacular Racing games you'll ever see! Experience the drive of your life as you throw yourself around 45 challenging tracks in one of 16 fully upgradeable cars.

The track environment is subject to the all-encompassing physics system that is unique to FlatOut, and is set to define a new standard in racing games. Fences will shatter, tyre walls will explode, water tanks and barrels will fly across the track into other cars. Every time you lose control, you will truly feel the weight of the car as it collides with and destroys a barn, or smashes into the pack of cars ahead of you, and with 40 deformable pieces on every car sparks are guaranteed to fly!

Anything you destroy or alter stays a part of the race, increasing the carnage to unprecedented levels! Broken fences, free rolling tyres, and even mangled parts of cars are left scattered around the track, increasing the mayhem with every lap.

An extensive championship mode will keep you 'FlatOut' for months on end, as you battle through a huge variety of races, mini-games and the most outrageous arenas of destruction you could possibly imagine. And it doesn't stop there. Online and multiplayer gaming options add even more variety to the game play. Challenge your closest peers, or the best gamers from across the globe and compete in the most realistic racer to date!

I remember trying this out on a friends xbox. It was really fun, so when I saw this game on Gamersgate, I bought it. However, for the PC, this game was horrible. The controls were way too annoying for me, and I was never able to do anything very well. I can't say much else about this game, other than that I know the gameplay is good (based on the console version I'd played a while back) but it's just not worth it on the computer...

It's a very arcadey racing game that rewards your for destruction which provide you with money and therefore better upgrades for your car. There are also silly mini games like seeing how far you can eject your driver (yes, your driver literally leaps out the windshield and flies for hundreds of meters). Fun? Yes, but only if you throw realism out the window, which is to say - if you're looking for a realistic driving simulation, you'd better look elsewhere.

I came into this game having played Flatout: Ultimate Carnage, which I bought for 2.50. Comparing them, this game's gameplay is hard, damn near impossible. It requires you to play perfectly to win any races. Obviously, the graphics and system requirements are respectively worse and lower.

However, it doesn't require Games For Windows Live, and I gave it a star for that.

This is an game definetely worth the price. It´s all about maxing out the fun with arcade-style racing, without caring too much about the condition of your racer. You gain nitro, which helps you to conquer the top-spots by smashing your competitors or the props around the racing tracks. Really fun and enjoyable stuff.

There are also some unlockable bonus challenges, with varying goals all the way from trashing your opposition to bits into playing darts and bowling with the rag-doll driver flying out of your vehicle, as it comes to an sudden stop. Again, really fun and addicting.

With a price like this I would recommend everyone checking this one out, it´s definetely worth it.

Complete Over the Top Racing / Crashing Fun!!!

With the current sale on Gamer's Gate this game is almost but not quite two bucks... in my opinion the decision is a no-brainer buy this game you won't regret that you did! That is unless you are a racing simulation purest because whatever this game my be it sure ain't a sim. Sure there are some rag doll physics going on because when you have a bad crash your driver gets thrown through the windshield of his car fly's down the road or across a field for what seems like half a mile hitting trees or whatever obstacles may be in the way and causing more hurt, but hit reset and he is back in the driver's seat ready to go. The car's drift around the dirt and asphalt tracks rather smoothly never becoming uncontrollable and always leaving you with that "just one more time" feeling. If this game had been released in arcade machines during the coin-op op it would have likely eaten quarters. Heck I own the game on PC now and if I saw it in an arcade machine today I would give it a whirl. There is not much story to this game but it really isn't that type of game, you just basically enter different events and try to finish first in races, there are some far out stunts that you can do in bonus mode that are pretty cool but I have been to busy with the actual racing part of the game to mess with those a lot so far, its one of those things on my "to do" list. The graphics look really well I think when you take into consideration that the game is about six years old. For those inquiring minds that want to know I have Flatout and Flatout 2 and both of the games run great on Windows 7 x64. Don't let the dirt tracks put you off, this game does not play at all like a rally racer. If I were to compare the game-play of Flatout to any single game that I have played I think I would have to say it probably comes closest to the Motor Storm series on PS3 without the insane difficulty of the first Motor Storm. Don't get me wrong Flatout is not easy by any stretch of the imagination and several of the races I have played over and over before I have been able to finish first in them, but I simply thought that the difficulty of the single player portion of the first Motor Storm game on PS3 was kind of insane. Maybe I missed something but I don't think I ever finished first in a race in that game and I have played a lot of racers over the years including some racing sim games that were easier. Anyway off topic there bottom line buy Flatout it is a great game!

My personal opinion is that it's a fun game at first, but it get's boring really fast.

The graphics still look pretty good when fully maxed. And overall it's a good game for $5.95.

Me and my friends play this game a lot, in particular the party games, as Highjump. We really enjoy them and we love competing. It's really addictive, my friends can guarantee that.

If you have someone to play with, I highly recommend this game. If you don't, I'd say you buy it anyway. It costs next to nothing and you'll have fun for hours.

A really fun racing game, with one annoying problem, the physics.

Graphics: They still look reasonably good when fully maxed out. The car destruction looks great, they crumble and break apart in a realistic fashion. Environments look good and are varied between snowy and icy areas, woodlands, race tracks, and dirt roads.

Sound: The cars all sound rather similar as do the crash effects. It is fun though, to hear someone scream as they are ejected out of their car.

Gameplay: Standard racing gameplay. Works well with a mouse and keyboard. There is a nice sense of speed and it's a blast to crash your opponents into walls, tires, and everything else you can find. Flatout's physics engine is both its best and worst part. Almost everything in the game can be destroyed, or at least be hit and moved about. Tracks start to get torn up as they progress which not only looks cool, but makes you have to look out so you don't crash.

The problems come in because it's just so easy to crash (and fly out your front windshield.) I have had a few times where small objects, like a tiny traffic cone, got stuck in my tire and flipped me about twenty feet in the air. I failed those races miserably. Other times I had barrels or tires get under my car causing me to flip over.

There is a lot to do in this game. You gain money from races which can be spent on new cars or on the many car upgrades(there are a TON.) If you want to take a break from the racing you can do one of the bonus tracks. These range from trying to launch your driver certain distances or into certain objects to car combat. There are also three bonus tracks that are very simple and short in design, but have some nice tricks to them.

Overall, if you're looking for a fun and addicting racing game this is it; even if the physics engine can be sometimes annoying (usually it's hilarious.)
