Europa Universalis III : Western - Anno Domini 1400 Sprite Pack review

The Western Sprite Pack adds better sprites to the western European countries. It doesn't change gameplay and is pure eyecandy, so it's not necessary to play EU3. But if you want your game to just look better, this is the thing for you.

Personally I played many western European countries, and these sprites make the game look so much niceer to see, that I consider it definately worth my money. But even if you play as another nation, you'll most likely encounter them, for the western European countries tend to go on a colonization spree.

A collection of over a dozen historically accurate character models specific to the late Medieval period to bring a bit more visual vareity to Europa Universalis 3.

It is a great addition to the Europa Universalis family, I love the extra flavor.

Another sprite pack. You will love Paradox for adding the variaty in the game, but at the same time, you will hate Paradox for not including this at the first place.

A modest improvement to the sprites used for armies in Western Europe in the early-game of EU3. It does not transform the game, but it adds a level of immersion to the game that is welcome.

It is also very cheap, so it can be bought with a few blue coins or you can combine with some of the other sprite packs available to get the "4 for 3" achievement.

Definitely a nice and eye-pleasing addition for all those for whom models in Europa Universalis III lacked in variety. Although people who don't really care about graphics should surely skip it.

Very nice and very detailed addition to the game. Well worth it in terms of the improved immersion.

A very nice addition, adding new flavour and atmosphere to a game which was already excellent as it was!

Much needed diversification of the western European nations in the period most of us see most of the time. :-)

Considering that most EUIII games seem to start in the late middle ages and all of mine have done so too this pack has been wonderful since I have spent a huge amount of my EUIII playing through the middle ages and into the Reformation.

Really good sprite pack. I for one can't play the game without them anymore. The feeling of the game is better, since these little figures are actually what you spend most of your time looking at.

Same as with the Eastern pack, this pack improves the game's look because it makes some of the units look and behave better (better models and animations). The asking $2 price may be too much for some people, so I'd suggest that you wait for a 50% off discount.

The pack is not essential, but definitely it is better with it, than without it.

Nice sprites. The new combat animation looks nice in combat, with attacker and defender giving and dodging blows. But the same animation is also used for assaulting forts, and it looks weird to see a single soldier dodging non-existent blows. Still recommended for immersion.

Great Sprite packs. These ones are probably the best as they are directly evident as soon as you begin a game.

The series of sprites created for Paradox games are far beyond the quality of sprites included in the base games. On top of the aesthetic quality, they are only 1.99 per pack, which will pay for its value over and over again as you play different countries - especially the early-game sprites, because we all know how many restarts Eu3 players do!

This sprite pack, although perhaps not for the casual fan of EU3, provides a small - but appreciable - amount of depth to this already wonderful game.

Only lasts the early part of the game, which some might see as a downside, but if like me that's the period you always start in then this sprite pack is definitely worth it.

This sprite pack spices up your gaming experience nicely in the early state of the game, but you can do just well without it too since it doesn't change the way the game works.

This is an great sprite pack, it gives the game a more historically feel to it. Through the downside is that you only have during the 1400. A rather Short of time.

This is a great add-on for EUIII. The textures add quite a bit to the feel of the game, and allow quick identification of friendly forces. If you can pick it up on sale... do it.

I don't like DLC, but these sprites are very nice

By digitalus posted 25th July 2011

Disclaimer: I'm not a fan of DLC. I love paid expansions and free updates; micro-expansions and pay-for enhancements aren't my favorite thing.

The new sprites are far, far better than the original. Not only are they more detailed, with better animations and superior overall design, but they fit perfectly into Europa Universalis III. They're absolutely better.

In addition, they change as the technology/time period changes. I believe each nation has four different models to represent scientific progress throughout your game's history.

I would have preferred these new models come with another expansion instead of being a stand-alone DLC, but I can't argue with their quality. Paradox isn't known for fantastic art, but these sprites are very, very good.

As nice as the hoi3 spritepacks and the sprites really help to give some much needed variation to the units. Simply put: With spritepacks the game is much more enjoyable!

If you're a hardcore fan of EU3 then there is no question that this is for you. They look great and they really help change the game atmosphere. It really helps the different countries look different from one another. It does suck that the sprites are only for the early years, but isn't that where most of us spend are gaming time anyway. I can see this getting really expensive if they keep releasing the sprite packs one by one and by culture. But if you've been playing EU3 for a while and could use a change this is definitely a good buy.

These sprites are a great aesthetic addition for any fans of EU3. This Western Pack (an Eastern Units Pack is also available for the same price) is perhaps a better investment than the Eastern Pack because it improves the visual appeal of some of the more popular factions in the game, like Spain and France.

Note that these sprites do require Divine Wind to run, and they get replaced by later technology after about 1500. That still leaves a full century of gameplay through the grand campaign, though, so they are definitely worth their low price. A great way to spend some of your Blue Coins!

In comparison to the eastern spritepacks, the different western spritepacks are more similar to each other but their combat movements are better done. Especially if compared to the standard EU3 unit sprites.

A must have for every EU3 fan to add a new and unique flavour to the game!

With the addition of the Western and Eastern sprite packs, EU3 finally blossoms into the magnificent swan from the cute, but somewhat ugly duckling at EU3's release. With many more DLC sprite packs in the pipeline I can see them being a success (if a tad expensive when all of them are put together - especially if it is on a century by century basis). But one thing is for sure. EU3 is a joy to play AND looks pretty for all the eye-candy lovers.

By avien posted 26th June 2011

Is this worth 2$? The answer is, it depends. If you look at the value you get for those two bucks, it's not much, even at the price. The textures look nice, but chances are, if you are the type of gamer that play Paradox's games, you're not playing for the graphics anyway.

But if, like me, you are a hardcore EUIII player, who spend hours upon hours on this game, then it might not matter so much. Because the value you already got from the main game seems so great, that you might as well sponsor Paradox a little more and get some new shiny swordsmen on the bargain.

Conclusion: Only a must for Paradox fanatics. If you are in doubt, wait a bit and get the pack even cheaper.

The Western sprites for EU3 really add to the mood of the game. I've played this game a lot before the full edition was released, but the standard generic armies with halberds for Western Europe really got tiresome. Since it is with European nations that I play most games, I can say now it feels really different with all the units with swords and the heraldry on the uniforms. This was long time due. Great work!

These new sprites are much more fitting for a 1399 campaign. Also they give the major western factions more optical variety. The new fighting animations are nice to watch.

Absolutely beautiful. Really makes the game feel more authentic when you see soldiers in their own coat of arms. Definitely looking forward to seeing more EU3 sprite packs from them, and these made me think about looking into their sprites for Vicky 2.
