GAME SUMMARY

Europa Universalis 2 - Asian Chapters

Rating: 3.9 (122 votes cast)

Europa Universalis II Asia Chapters is based on the successful Europa Universalis II engine and featuring everything that the original EU II has with historic events from 1419 to 1820. In addition, brand new events focused on the grand Asian campaigns in the same period were added to broaden the historical coverage of the game, and thus give players an exciting new experience of assuming the Asian roles.

New Territories, Weapons, Religions & Culture

In addition to the 180 countries in EU II, in EU II Asia Chapters, the map has been expanded to include 30 new Asian provinces with greater historical accuracy. The player can also easily design new countries and scenarios with the tools provided.

There were only 2 provinces in EU II for Korea, namely, Yalu and Kyongju. But in EU II Asia Chapters, Korea now has 8 provinces: Hamgyeong, Pyeongan, Hwanghae, Gyeonggi, Gangwon, Chungcheong, Jeolla and Gyeongsang.

Similarly for Nippon (Japan), EU II covers Ezochi, Tohoku, Kanto, Kansai, Shikoku and Kyushu. However, in EU II Asia Chapters, Nippon now includes all the provinces of the time including: Ezo, North Mutsu, South Mutsu, Hokurikudou, Kanto, Chubu, Tokaido, Kii, Kinki, Sanindou, Chugoku, Sanyoudou, Shikoku, North Kyushu and South Kyushuu.

EU II Asia Chapters has also introduced new Oriental weapons, for example, the great war fleet Turtle Ship: Kobukson for Korea. There are also new military generals and political consequences for all Asian provinces and finally, Hinduism, Confucianism and Buddhism have been added as new religions that can influence people around the whole world.

New Graphics and Sound

EU II Asia Chapters has 20 minutes of new introductory animation and live footage that has been added at the beginning of each new Asian campaign.

In addition, a new authentic musical score, which is a selection of the classical works from the period, has also been added. World-class composer Mr. Chen has created a series of great Oriental compositions for all the new Asian campaigns.

New Asian Campaigns: Historical Background

The jewel of EU II Asia Chapters is the Grand Campaign starting in 1419 and ending in 1820; emphasis was placed on events that happened during the Ming dynasty of China, the Hideyoshi period of Japan, and the Choson dynasty of Korea.

This is basically EU2 minus the latest patch plus more Asian content. I think it's only of interest to those, who are into old games and Asian history.

Asian chapters is the asian twin brother of Europa Universalis 2 (Eu2) but more focused in the asian region. This game is an oddity for fans willing to complete their collection of paradox games. I generally recommend Eu2 for new players . But if you want to play with China, Korea or japan without modding Eu2 then this is your game.

Asian Chapters is an interesting expansion to EU2 version 1.03 by Typhoon Games - a game development company based in Hong Kong.

The game is not as stellar as EU2 (because that is one is patched to the latest version 1.09). However, it is the addition of more provinces in Asia and the handful of new scenarios (and corny intro movies) that make this a worthwhile purchase. Beyond this, you will find the game is similar to the older version of EU2 in all other aspects.

You may be surprised that the install is laden with bugs. First, you are unable to change screen resolution and the game starts up in 1280 x 1024 mode. Secondly, there is no in-game music.

Fortunately I have provided a workaround for all this - see the game documents above this Review Section. Once these problems are bypassed, I enjoyed the game thoroughly on my notebook - running it in 800 x 600 mode under XP.

Nice new scenarios, it really gives a new fresh boost to an already aging game.

EU Asian Chapters is a must for all fans of the EU Saga. In an era when downloadable expansions where still at hing of the future, it came as a pleasant surprise to the modding community of the time, the first of a series of casi-mod games that are everywhere today (For The Glory, Arsenal of Democracy, Magna Mundi etc).

As far as gameplay is concerned, Asian Chapters is basically EU2, with a strong emphasis on the Asian continent. Maybe nit much of a breakthrough, the game certainly is exotic and a great collection piece in a great price for all Paradox fans !
