GAME SUMMARY

Dark Void

Rating: 3.6 (57 votes cast)

Dark Void is a sci-fi action-adventure game that combines an adrenaline-fuelled blend of aerial and ground-pounding combat. Set in a parallel universe called "The Void," players take on the role of Will, a pilot dropped into incredible circumstances within the mysterious Void. This unlikely hero soon finds himself swept into a desperate struggle for survival, joining forces with a rebel human group called The Survivors. Trapped in the Void, these resistance fighters are battling to hold off a mysterious alien race that plans to threaten Earth.

Dark Void’s unique combination of jetpack-booster aerial dog fighting and third-person combat creates a thrilling new gameplay dynamic to the third-person shooter experience. Taking 3D action to a whole new level, Dark Void’s unique vertical combat system allows players to dangle from thousand foot drops as they take cover and hurl enemies to their doom, bringing a whole new sense of tension and thrill to the player. Will is also equipped with a powerful rocket pack which allows for fierce in-air combat, hurtling through the Void at blistering speeds while shooting down anything that gets in his path.

So you wanna shoot some cyborg-robot-worm people, so you wanna fly with a jetpack, so you wanna get bossed around by Tesla, well you can in this game, however there are draw backs to all this. What you might ask? Porting. It's an ugly word but it's true. With an x-box 360 controller for windows there are zero control issues, however as a pc gamer I like to use my gaming mouse and keyboard not a controller, thus some issues pop up. The jet pack flying areas are a little confusing, to say the least, to control with a mouse, I was doing loops until I cranked up my mouse to 2400 dpi. And as far as graphics they're good enough, some rough edges and some questionable lip sync but the lack of AA and such option are a big miss in my opinion. Also if you don't have SLI or an i7 do not enable physx as it causes major slow down with more than one mob on screen. As for game play, it's a decent TPS but at time I feel like it's a mountain climbing sim with guns rather than a TPS, could just be me but pressing "c" to climb or drop every ten feet gets a little boring. Story wise it's your standard b-movie sci-fi with a steam-punk feel and a British love interest.

All and all, if you can get past the porting issues, lack of graphical options, cheesey line, and slightly dumb AI, you'll have a great time.

There is a game-ending bug but fortunately takes place early in the second or third level so if you happen to trip it you won't have to go back and replay too much.

This is an instant five out of five. Not because I'm a Capcom fanboy (which I am) but because Capcom did with this game what many developers don't - they allowed for the end user to customize all the pretties so that those of us on older PCs could have a go at it too.

Recognizes old SSE? Check! Easy to program a non-M$ game pad for it? Check!

It might not look all PS3 on my rig but it certainly looks 360.

I'm running an ancient AMD 2400+ single core, one gig RAM, and crumby ol' PCI GeoForce 7300 GT 512 MB. With the wonderful option of being able to switch off PhysX (which would otherwise require a dual core) I've had no problem running the game outside of the glitch that resulted in having to replay the first two or three levels to get safely past it.

At it's new discounted price there's absolutely no reason to keep passing this up if you don't have it already for one of the consoles.

Its not often that a game adds something new to the mix. Dark void tried it with its verical cover system, and it works well for the most part, which, unfortunatly for the rest of the game, doesnt seem to work very well at all.

For starters, the story has huge plot holes in, with nothing being explained as to who some characters are or how they got to the void. The rocket pack is a good gimmick, but more often or not you'll find yourself slamming into the object you were trying to avoid because of the quirky controls. The shooting aspect of the game is handled very well, with the guns feeling and sounding just as they should. The scenery is bland to look at and a chore to get around in with the rocket pack, with only one or two levels having anything interesting to observe as you fly by.

With A bit of polish this game could have been great, but instead it feels rushed and incomplete in the important places.

I can only recommend that, despite its flaws, you try out this brave attempt at meshing cover-based ground combat with jetpack based Rocketeer style aerial dogfights.

Due to the roller coaster of a difficulty curve, parts of this game made me want to pull my hair out. Other parts still made me glad I stuck with it to the end.

Give it a try, you might like it!

Decent game with interesting idea, which was obviously killed by various bugs and glitches spawning from time to time (not working triggers, that don't open doors for further progress, or desktop crashes on some cutscenes). Also, developers could've utilized Unreal engine better, as the game seems to lag at some points even with the graphics it has (not the best there is among the games with this engine). Ground and so called "vertical" combat are more or less the same - repetitive and frustrating at times.

The major positive feature of this game is aerial combat which, though sometimes hard, manages to deliver most of the fun this product is able to deliver.

So there it is, 3 stars. One star dropped for bugs, another one for not the best realization of original idea in gameplay.

I thougt this was a fantastic game.

I'm not much of a fan of flight sim games, so I was not sure about Dark Void when it was suggested to me by a friend, but now I'm glad I gave it a chance.

the game seamlessly mixes fantastic, smooth flight combat with cover based shooting gameplay, but even better, it allows you to choose the best way to attemp any situation. This is of course a staple of FPS and TPS games these days, but it is made all the sweeter by being able to fly over your enemies, land, take their own defences and hail them with a few rounds before they know what hit them.

Definatly worth the money.
