Dreamfall: The Longest Journey review

By Vieryon posted 25th February

I've heard good things about this game, and I've always been looking for a game based on story over everything else. An adventure game that's gripping, something that can keep my attention all the way through. This was definitely it. The story to this game is amazing, as well as the way it was portrayed. The only downfall is, as others have said, the combat mechanics and puzzles aren't challenging or innovate. However, with that said, this game is not designed to be hack-and-slash at all.

The characters are amazing, some of the most memorable that you'd find even by modern standards. The graphics are a bit aged, however they aren't at all bad by any means. In fact, i found the environments (Although again, aged) were quite beautiful. The first thing I noticed was the fact that the mouse seemed inverted... Left to right inversion, but I got used to it. There's an option to swap it that I didn't find till' the end, but it's there.

The hacking isn't terribly frustrating, the way it's designed is like a puzzle which is entertaining in some ways. Same with lock picking, another puzzle.

As for the stealth aspect, i never really had a problem. You can lose the game, but it auto-saves (Usually before a puzzle and before a possible enemy) so that being killed isn't an annoying backtrack through stuff you've already done.

If you are lusting for an adventure game that will take you through beautiful landscapes and a story with characters that are absolutely well designed. If you're ok with putting aside actual combat for a storyline that's done oh-so-well with twists and turns. This is your game.

I would recommend this to anyone... -waits for Dreamfall: Chapters-

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey review

Dreamfall is a unique adventure game. Like most adventure games Dreamfall consists of traveling around talking with characters and solving puzzles. The puzzles are all pretty straightforward and for the most part are not very difficult. That said, unlike many adventure games, it is possible to lose the game.

This is because Dreamfall includes combat and stealth elements and it is possible to be caught and for the character to be killed, requiring a reload. Unfortunately stealth and combat feel highly awkward with the game’s controls making these situations more difficult than necessary. To make matters worse the game also includes some mini-games such as lock picking and hacking. The hacking mini-game is timed and in one situation it was necessary for me to repeatedly retry hacking a device 7 times before succeeding in spite of knowing what I was supposed to do. Needless to say that was very frustrating.

Essentially Dreamfall is an excellent story wrapped in a flawed game. The actual story of the game is

excellent and highly compelling. It features the exploits of three characters which the player will control and how their actions affect each other. unfortunately cumbersome controls and poorly implemented game play features detract from the quality of the game play. If story is most important part of an adventure game for you then you should really enjoy Dreamfall. However if you are easily frustrated by poor controls you might want to look at another game. The game might also be confusing if you have not yet played the original The Longest Journey game.
