GAME SUMMARY

Depth Hunter

Rating: 3.9 (12 votes cast)

Depth Hunter offers 25 exciting missions in which players will hunt different fish species and face the difficulties of breath-holding spearfishing, an ancient fishing method. Players will also have to fight predators, can find treasures and get the possibility to take underwater photos to capture the beauty of the simulated, detailed and lively underwater worlds they’re exploring also in a free mode. The game supports motion controllers, such as the Razer™ Hydra® system.

Spearfishing and Underwater Hunting are ancient fishing and hunting methods, used to catch fish and shellfish by using a mechanical harpoon. Today, spearfishing is a sports activity in many countries around the world, especially in the UK, around the Mediterranean Sea and in South America. Spearfishers hunt while diving apnoea, holding their breath, so have to coordinate their energy carefully while monitoring their prey, especially in tactically challenging hunting situations.

A nice diving game. Years ago I played AquaNox 2 and loved it though it had a lot of bugs and crashed often. Depth Hunter is not in the same genre as AquaNox but they both are underwater diving games. Depth Hunter is more of a diving simulation though. You basically have 25 tasks you can complete in order. They range from catching your first two fish to more difficult tasks. But like the other reviews stated its the underwater world that is simply amazing in this game. I would go as far to say its the best represention of the diving world yet in any game. And there are other things you can do other than hunting fish like taking pictures (nice!) and treasure hunting. You do have a oxygen meter so be careful to not run out of the game will end. Also, this game has check point saves where after each task in completed the game saves. Other than that its a wonderful game to dive into no pun intended. Depth Hunter also has a free mode and three diving location around the world, South Africa, Bahamas and Thailand. They unlock as you progress through the 25 tasks with South Africa being the first location unlocked then the Bahamas and finally Thailand. Each location has slightly different terrian (above and under) water and different ocean life as well that is specific to that region of the world. I highly recommend Depth Hunter if you have the slightest interest in diving or fishing under the ocean.

A gorgeous game. Very simple, very straightforward, for the most part. The volume of content isn't huge, to be honest, and you'll want to play to just be immersed in... Well, the water, but rather, the very appealing atmosphere and terrain. The soundtrack is spot on, very complimentary.

My one real gripe is the occasional lack of guidance or clarity in how to go about finding specific fish or terrain features, leading you on some wild goose chases. Luckily, you won't lack for things to see if you do get lost.

Amazing underwater fishing game

I've always loved fishing IRL and in games, but fishing is one of those niche types that doesn't get the respect(production value) it deserves in games until now. Depth hunter really surprised me, the graphics are superb and sound is accurate. It does have arcade elements in bringing the fish to you but its done in a way that feels realistic. Theirs a photo taking mode and I can see why even very close up textures are very detailed on the coral/fish and such. Theirs a lot of challenge in trying to nab the right fish and watching how much time until need to surface. Anyone who has the slightest interest in fishing or exploring underwater should give it a try.

I bought this game mainly for the Hydra Support that Biart has included and I can't wait for Deep Black Reloaded (that I hope is coming to GG). Depth Hunter is a spear fishing game by nature, but I wanted it for the beautiful visuals and soothing music. I'm not interested in the fishing aspect as much as the free mode, the rumoured upcoming multiplayer patch and the engine and game mode updates that are in the pipe. The game will seem niche to many but it's a bargain underwater vacation for me.

Biart seems dedicated to improving and expanding their games and more importantly, dedicated to their customers as updates will be free patches. Niche or not, I'm compelled to give my money to these types of developers first.
