DCS: Black Shark

Rating: 4.7 (7 votes cast)

DCS: Black Shark is a simulation of the Russian Ka-50 attack helicopter and is the first simulation module of the Digital Combat Simulator series by The Fighter Collection and Eagle Dynamics.

DCS: Black Shark can be played as the most realistic combat helicopter simulation ever created for the PC with authentic flight dynamics and systems modeling. Black Shark may also be played as a console-style arcade game for the casual gamer.

A detailed and accurate 330,000 sq km depiction of the western Caucasus region serves as the battlefield and includes a broad array of eastern and western air, land and sea units.

Each air, land and sea unit is accurately modeled to include detailed models, weapon systems, movement dynamics and artificial intelligence. Each bullet, rocket, shell or bomb fired is modeled in detail for accurate performance.

Powerful and easy to use Mission and Campaign Editors are provided to allow creation of user-created missions and campaigns. Non-linear campaigns are provided with unlimited replayability. Multiplayer game play is provided to include both cooperative play using the Ka-50 data link and head-to-head. Multiplayer supports up to 16 players.

A set of detailed training missions, single missions and a campaign are included.

DCS: Black Shark review

Well then. I had heard about the complexity of DCS Blackshark, but i was honestly stunned at how complecated you can make this simulator, every button and stitch in the cockpit is accurately modeled on the real ka-50 and yes they all do something and can pressed or toggled.

its a stunning piece of software that caters for the casual flightsim fan with options to make your chopper invulnerable, unlimited weapons and fuel, simplified controls through to the full experience of a 5 minute chopper start up procedure along with the cockpit in russian (no im not kidding about the 5 minute start up)

I cannot recomend this more highly, but i suggest visiting the DCS website to pick up things there like the latest patches, ordering a hardcopy of the 500+ page manual. you'll probably need it

DCS: Black Shark review

Wow! What a program! This is not only a game, this is one of the most detailed flight simulations ever, plus all the combat stuff. First I was skeptical if I would like a simulation of this incredible depth. I am enjoying MS Flight Simulator very much, but there I usually fly with small Cessnas, thus not having much experience with more complex aircraft.

However, Black Shark makes the transition easy, thanks to its optional Arcade mode where you can get accustomed to the detailed cockpit. In this mode, Black Shark nearly feels like the old "Gunship 2000" I loved to play on my old Playstation 1. And back then I thought Gunship was complex. No. Switch off Arcade mode and see what a real simulation is. And have fun while experiencing how great it is to gain more and more control over your helicopter, by practicing and trying.

Some reviews say the campaign is not that good, or that graphics are outdated. Personally, I don't think so. Black Shark is also fun if "only" played as a game.
