Reviews:

Cthulhu Saves the World:

" So when I say Cthulhu Saves The World is already one of my favourite games of 2011 you can be sure I've not been swayed by its astonishingly precise pastiche of early 1990s JRPG cliches, strident synth music, chunky menus and all. It's simply a really clever, hugely enjoyable game, and it's as much honest tribute as cheeky spoof."
Eurogamer

" It's rare to find a game that is both entertaining and genuinely funny, and so far Cthulhu Saves the World is both."
Joystiq

" Honestly? This is too good to be stuck in the 360 indie game store"
Gamesradar

Breath of Death VII: The Beginning:

"Breath of Death VII is one of those rare parody games that recognises and mocks the pitfalls of its genre, but then sidesteps them in its own design, equipping itself with a veneer of smug satisfaction that transfers to the gamer."
-HonestGamer

"The writing is impeccable, sharp, and one will find themselves in gigglefits throughout, especially when they begin to recognize many of the references being made to older games, and the vast number of play-on-words."
-RPGamer

"Breath of Death VII: The Beginning is a real surprise. It's an RPG that feels like it was a classic from back in the day, but it doesn't have any RPG hang-ups."
-WorthPlaying

"For an RPG whose sheer fun factor is on par with a lot of the $30 to $60 games people shell out multiple bills for, it's an extreme bargain."
-RPGFan

Cthulhu Saves the World review

Definitely a good game for the genre, with great references to the works of Lovecraft, and an amusing story. The diversity of combat is maintained through the game, with combat rarely feeling repetitive. A worthwhile buy, and an overall good game.

If you need a game that entertains, is very easy to pick up, and may even make you laugh, this is a good choice. The world is once again in need of saving, but this time the hero has slightly different motives for going on with the task...Slick, simple playability, and a good story to go with it. One word of warning though - there is a maze in the game. But hey, nobody's perfect!

This is a great little gem of a game!

The story of the great Cthulhu and his way to world dominance, is a short but very sweet little thing. A throwback to 16-bit RPGs, it's full of nostalgia and hints to time passed,

but manages not to feel archaic. We travel the world with Cthulhu and his gang and visit

a handfull or so places along the way.

The battle system is simplistic, but not simple. The possibility of combos and the fact that your adversaries get stronger every turn adds a strategic element to what otherwise would have been a pretty bland fighting system.

This is no blockbuster of a game. The characters are not very well done, the cities lack in complexity and the world is nothing extraordinaire. However, it does a great deal with what it's given. It is a great little gem of a game, with lots of nostalgia and a cute, albeit shallow, story. If you like old school RPGs, but don't quite have the time to spend hundreds of hour on one, then this just be right up your alley. If you do have the time, however, the replay-ability is very high as well! All in all, a great buy for lovers of classic RPGs.

Old school, but better

By dz_duck posted 12th July 2012

This is a fun little RPG that certainly scratches the old-school itch. However, it improves on typical old RPGs with several nice gameplay mechanics. For example, you can initiate a random fight at any time in dungeons. To go along with this, the "random encounter limits" mentioned in the description mean that after a certain number of fights in a dungeon, there are no more random encounters. Little touches like this make the game fun and easy to play. Also, as many have mentioned, the writing is quite funny.

Cthulhu saves the world is a well designed and humorous old style RPG game that ensures quite a few laughs from the general variety of monsters, the general speech of the game itself and of course the developers commentary which gives you a well-needed insight into the making of the game (it can be active or disabled)

Overall i would say Cthulhu saves the world is a brilliant game and does very well as a comedic RPG as well.

If you like breath of death this is pretty much the same game with a few nice tweaks. You get one up potions (if you die you can use it and retry the fight) which is great if you forgot to save for a while, and now you can teleport to any town you have previously been to at any time. This is great if you are facing tough enemies and need an MP charge. This game is definitely for fans of old school RPG's and I highly recommend picking this one up. You won't be disappointed.

Cthulhu saves the world is an old style RPG game set in HP Lovecraft's Cthulhu universe. With its variety of difficulties it will appeal to those looking for a calculated play style or to those who simply wish to end the combat aspects of the game as quickly as possible (and anywhere in between).

The developers commentary gives an often humorous look into how the game was made. Also humorous is the storyline.

Once the story is finished, you may search for the hidden dungeons on the map, or start a new game using one of the exclusive game modes that are unlocked after finishing. This gives the game good replay value.

One of the best things this game has going for it is its humor, amusing jokes ensure that this relatively fast past simple RPG is kept fun. Gameplay is solid and enjoyable, multiple charcters and different leveling routes make this game feel like it offers quite a lot of choice in how you want to play. A fun little game with great music.

All in all it's a good game, with great retro graphics and a good, clean sense of humor. Just don't come looking for much plot or character development, and you'll love this light and witty game!

If you consume JRPG's like tortillas, then this will be a great way to spend a few bucks, or some of those blue coins. Don't expect FFXXV, you won't get it, but it is really funny and a competent NES-grade JRPG.

Amazing humor in this game where you play as Cthulhu as he is sapped of his power and must be a hero so that he can regain said power so he can then conquer the world. Very similar to Zeboyd's other game Breath of Death VII so if you have played that you will be right at home. Has quite a few optional dungeons, and many recruitable characters. This also comes with a copy of Breath of Death VII on purchase so that right there is one more reason to get this great game.

A step up from Breath of Death VII. Great blend of retro elements and new touches. Good gameplay, funny story, deep RPG elements and low price make it a very great purchase. Plus you get a free copy of Breath of Death VII. Really a great choice for all RPG fans.

Cthulhu Saves the World is a game chock full of humor and value. The fact that it comes alongside Breath of Death VII: The Beginning is more than enough to make it worth your money. Both games are hilarious throwbacks to a bygone era of gaming and both deserve your time. Furthermore, Cthulhu Saves the World includes extra modes that unlock after you beat it, making it further worth your money. That's really the idea here: bang for your buck. Humorous bang for said buck. If you're here while it's on sale, pick it up! If you're here while it's full price, pick it up anyway!

This game is too much fun. It captures the retro aesthetic perfectly while improving on the formula in a lot of meaningful was. This is a game that understands how to make its choices meaningful and streamlined. I should also mention the humor is spot-on almost 100% of the time. Best of all, it comes with a number of options for replay that will make you want to replay the game, including a whole new story with new characters and monsters! Seriously, buy this game!

This game is mostly a standard JRPG, but with most of the irritating features of JRPGs removed. Random encounters are strictly limited, you have a degree of choice when levelling up as to which skills or stats to take, and inventory etc is stripped down to a point where it's not bothersome.

Most notable, though, is that this game is a JRPG that is a parody of JRPGs. The writing is great and usually funny and the music is excellent.

This game is great and easily worth triple its price. Play it. Now.

Fun, but not very imaginative

By lord_rashiel posted 23rd December 2011

"Cthulhu Saves the World" is an indie RPG mimicking the oldie and goldie times of "Final Fantasy" and other 2D JRPGs. It features, yes, you guessed it, Cthulhu, that due to extraordinary circumstances has to become a hero in order to retrieve his powers. Soon Cthulhu recruits some characters into his party and goes on an epic quest towards hero-dom.

The game is not very long and thus doesn't manage to get boring. If you haven't guessed already, it's a spoof of an entire RPG genre, while being a genuine RPG in its own right. The dialogues in the game are witty and funny and all the heroes are lovable. However the plot itself is kind of shallow and doesn't provide a deeper satisfaction. Let me tell it to you straight - you won't play CSTW for plot, but for the gameplay and that one is actually good.

In addition to the main quest there are lots of bonus dungeons and a few superbosses that weren't even in an XBLIG version. Moreover, the game introduces a "Sanity" stat (of course) to the game that when inflicted changes how the enemies behave. It can be advantageous or not and it's up to you to device strategies for different enemies. Also on level-ups you can choose what kind of bonuses you want to acquire, which is a very nice gimmick.

Upon finishing the game you unlock a few new modes and the most important of them is "Cthulhu's Angels", which is basically a DLC which rehashes the gameplay and maps of CSTW with a different scenario and different characters.

CSTW comes together with a free copy of "Breath of Death VII". Despite marked as "VII", it's in fact not a part of the series and the number is but a joke. It's a much shorter and less polished game from the same creator. It's still entertaining enough for a few hours it will last, but plot is even more lackluster. It's basically a dungeon crawler and its game mechanics are virtually identical to those of "Cthulhu" sans the "Sanity" stat. The dungeons are shorter and more linear, which I consider a good thing as the ones in "Cthulhu" can sometimes be really confusing.

All in all, both games are quite nice and even for a full price they're a steal, but don't expect a deep and plot-heavy experience.

Great game. If you like old JRPGs or Cthulhu this game is a great value. This takes all the good things from old NES/SNES era RPGs, fixes most of the bad things, and adds some new stuff for fun. The humor is great and the writing is better then you would expect. There are alot of difficulties and bonus mode for replayability. If you are reading the reviews for this game you are probably interested enough to enjoy the game.

Fan of Lovercraft books, I love this game for the background and the humor. It's easy to handle the game and the level up system allow you to customize your heroes in different ways which aloow a small replayability. This game take around 30-40 hours to finish by exploring every dungeons.

Good Oldschool RPG Game

By Azradun posted 29th October 2011

I must admit I was pleasantly surprised by this game. It has a funny story, some nice and innovative mechanics (for example Insanity effects, Combos and cooperation tactics). It provides a solid gameplay for its price and is simply fun to play. Last but not the least, it looks nicely on a wide screen, which is a plus for me. Overall, I enjoyed it very much.

Cthulhu Saves the World review

Cthulu Saves the World is a indie RPG that can be funny and interesting but it was hard for me to get in the game since the graphics and sounds are so retro. I can get how people like the game because of this but I need better graphics and sounds to fully enjoy a game. The game is cheap and is bundled with another game for free which is nice and both games will take hours to complete. If you have $3 then buy it but don't expect the best game in the world.

As someone who has never played a JRPG all their life, I thoroughly enjoyed this game. Five stars.

By oliviergame posted 11th September 2011

The game is Final Fantasy 1-5 clone, but easier to play ( at least in normal mode ) and with a lot of jokes. There is about 20hours playtime, with no downtime, plus the bonus levels which I still have not tried. I did not find any walkthrough on the net, but it might be interesting because there are semi-hidden optional quests which you can discover at a certain point ( after meeting Cid ).

Great humor and good gameplay in a neat 16 bit jRPG spoof/homage. Of course, the starting concept is zany and a bit bizarre, but just like in Charles Barkley Shut up and Jam Gaiden, it manages to work pretty well. Highly recommended for those that liked games in the vein of Earthbound and Dragon Quest.

Cthulhu Saves the World review

By tomimt posted 4th August 2011

If you've ever wanted to play a game as Cthulhu, then look no further than this. In the beginning Cthulhu is stripped from his madness causing powers of world domination. He then must, as the title suggests, save the world in order to get them back.

As you'd imagine the game is a parody take on JRPG's with some mosnter slaying in the dungeons, boss battles and rummaging around the world map. The game also provides some additional value with different kind of game types, like Cthulhu's Angels, in which as the name suggest Cthulhu hires a group of girls to do the adventuring for him.

The RPG elements, such as leveling and battles, work well. The leveling is made easy enough, so it doesn't make anyone to rub their heads and the battles can be won in seconds. All in all, the game play feels fun.

Cthulhu Saves the World is more casual in game play than the games it parodies, so you can play it through quickly in the easiest mode. Playing on harder the game does provide more than enough challenge though, so it caters well to different audiences. So with this prize it is a well worth the try.

Thank God for easy mode

By ET3D posted 3rd August 2011

I don't mean to imply by the title of this review that the developers are God. Perhaps a dark god... Anyway, this game has a lot of random encounters, and they got tiring pretty quickly. Easy mode makes them easy to get through which makes it easier to concentrate on the inventive ideas, in-jokes and puns. Some of these are within the random encounters with their quirky enemies, so by no means are these encounters completely worthless.

All in all any annoying bits are more than made up by the basic gameplay and humour. I don't have any nostalgia towards this type of RPG (and haven't played such games much), but even so I found the mechanics easy to use, once I figured out the controls.

It's good value for money, probably even more so considering you get two games. I've yet to play the other one, though.

I'd recommend anyone looking to pick a good game for cheap to give this a try.

I wasnt impressed, cthulu fanboys call this old school. I call this rpgmaker. I am tired of indie game developers using indie as an excuse for substandard production values. At the very least they could have tried to add voice acting but they didnt. The game consists of cthulu grinding jrpg style and entering randomly generated battles after a certain number the random battles are disabled for that area. I'm sure cthulu fanboys will love this but the only thing i liked was the price.

For this price Cthulhu Saves the World can't be beat if you're looking to play a quality and genuinely funny SNES style RPG.

Battles take place randomly while walking across the game map and while health is restored after each battle, mana is not, so you have to make smart decisions on when to use it, or you may have to face a dangerous Boss monster with only basic attack.

Tons of humor and in-good-fun jokes at the expense of RPGs, for example, when saving the game tells you to be sure "not to remove the cartridge or HDD while saving". Great indie title. Great price. Plus you get Breath of Death, the developer's first title, included in the price.

Cthulhu Saves the World review

By Coteaz posted 23rd July 2011

Cthulhu Saves the World offers a surprising amount of entertainment and amusement for such a low price. Although it is primarily a parody of early-1990's Japanese RPGs, CStW is nonetheless a well-made game in its own right.

I can say with certainty that I have had more fun with Cthulhu Saves the World than I have had with many full-priced games in years. Anyone who enjoys turn-based RPGs in the vein of Final Fantasy or Pokemon will find this little gem a worthwhile and satisfying purchase.

By ssternbe posted 15th July 2011

I just got this - I liked the price ($3) and thought it may be fun. It has a very retro feel in the good way.

Played for a few hours and I had a blast. It is so silly at parts that I laughed out loud (especially all the books at the University). It is easy to learn the controls though it is keyboard only. I would recommend it to those that want a fun light-hearted adventure.

Finally! I have waited eagerly for this game to be ported over from XBLA. Witty and humorous story, interesting characters, superb music and old-school graphics (looks like a SNES game) provide 7-10 hours of fun. You also get the first game from the developers, Breath of Death VII, so it's a high recommendation.
