Europa Universalis: Crown of the North

the game takes a long time to learn with no tutoral, but u kind of catch on quickly if you have played total war. the graphics arent all that good, and i find it frustrating to do some tedious things in the game like getting allys to help you fight or donate when u need help. its time consuming and i beat the easier campaign, but id rate it about a 4 or 5

While I enjoyed playing this game, it did not keep me entertained as long as the Europa Universalis main series or Victoria. It is good if you want to play a quick game, but it is much simpler than the other games in the series. There is little variety to what you can do, but there is a little bit of strategy involved. I'd recommend if only to get a taste for the roots of the rest of the series, and because it's a really cheap price.

a simple yet interesting game. much simplified from the rest of the europa universalis series but had enough fun things to do with it to keep myself entertained

Get this game if you're interested in scandinavian history surrounding the kalmar union. This game is nice and simple and a good introduction to grand strategy due to it's small scale. Recommended.

I really disliked Crown of the North. People is saying that is a smaller version of Europa Universalis, and that should have helped me since I never liked the series in the first place. Old graphic, awkward interface, and lack of a good challenge come to mind at first.

I guess I would like to see something similar to the Civilization series, and although I do understand they are not trying to do so, this I probably exactly why I don’t like the game: the diplomacy is horrendous, there is no political map mode and the interaction with trade is a joke.

I do not recommend this game even at the current price, it is just a waste of time.

Playing this game is like doing experimental archaeology in the fiel of computer game history.

Crown Of The North is actually the remake of the last game of a strategy game series formerly only available in Sweden. Back then Paradox Interactive wasn't even known under that name. The Svea Rike series was made by Target Games as a pc game implementation of a board game.

Many things typical for a Paradox game can already be observed in this little gem of yore, while the interface has a strong "90s feel" to it. The artwork on the map is astounding, but would probably be perceived as distracting in the far more complex later Paradox Games such as the Europa Universalis and Hearts of Iron series.

As the game it is, Crown Of The North is well worth it's three bucks.

This game is a good starting point if you haven't played any of the EU games. It allows you to experiment with different strategies. I only wish that the diplomacy was a little more involving. BUT still a good game for the price.

The price is small and it has some strategic content, but also is very simple. The graphics is old and difficult to see whats really going on. The battle system is quite mysterious - the more the better and an I guess that mixing units also is a good idea.

So, with the limited possibilities and since I did not really had fun I cannot recommend it, even for this price.

Oh, one good thing though: the choices that can be made sometimes are quite balanced and represent interesting historical factoids. Nice.

Crown of the North is a cheaper and smaller version of Europa Universalis but its still quite a good challenging game in its own right.

However, it does have some bad points; the diplomacy isnt very good, theres no "political" map mode and there is little interaction with trade. Also, the forums for this game are deserted.

I would recommend this game to people considering buying EU3 so they can get a taste, not a very good taste i must say, of what will come.

First off: this game is definitely worth the $1. The strategy involved is a lot of fun. You build up your provinces and recruit armies to go conquer the the rest of Scandinavia. The replayability is good: you can play through as all the 6 different nations and try different strategies each time.

The biggest draw-back to this game is the lack of diplomatic complexity. Other EU games have A LOT more depth in that area, but Crown of the North has very few options for diplomacy.

This game is a simpler EU. It only has a few kingdoms to play as. It has an event system that affects your relation with the classes of people. You can build armies upgrade your provinces. I got this to play on my laptop and works like a charm. The only thing I didnt like was that there is no music in game, only sound effects. But for just $1 its a good pick.

Anybody here remember Svea Rike III? No? Don' t worry people, that's completely understandable. SR3 was one of the first games created by Paradox, targeting mainly the Swedish market. I can still remember trying to understand what went on there... Crown of the North, should be considered more of a port of that game and less of an autonomous entity. Granted, it is heavily influenced by Europa Universalis that had intervened, but it still has that special nostalgic flavor. Add to that the exotic, albeit frozen, theme, the non-existent learning curve and the extremely low price, and you just can' t go wrong with this one !!!

I thought it to be a very nice game at first, with a nice map and relatively easy to learn mechanics. But the game has a very, very slow pace in my oppinion, and failed to hold my attention long enough to progress to the end section, or even the mid section of the game.

Short, fun game. This is the best 1 dollar i ever spent on a video game. You can play multiple nations, build stuff and generally conquer the north. Not a lot of bad to say about it. A dollar in price is too low in my opinion but maybe others haven't bought it. Makes for a good time filler!

If a episode from Europa Universalis, a episode in wich you can only play with the kigdoms of the North of Europe, Dennmark, Swedeen or Norway. You can experience the great war of Europe in the XIII century an play for almost a century of war and great battles. I recomend you this game 8/10.

I was expecting the game to play a lot like Europa Universalis, and I was a little disappointed at first that it seemed incredibly dumbed down. After playing for a while, however, I found myself really getting into it. Crown of the North is a little bit easier to just pick up and play, but the lack of complexity doesn't hurt the depth too much. It wasn't nearly as engaging as EU, but for the price I felt like I got my money's worth.

Crown of the north is a fun little minigame. It's a bit of a chore improving every single province structure ten times or more. But once you figure out how to play it it's a nice little waste of time, even though it can take quite a while to finish it.

All in all a 'Paradox lite' game.

A pretty good mini europa game. I find it very hard to play and is more for harvard professors than 10 year old kids.

By omgponies posted 10th January 2010

It's a more simpler version of europa universalis taking place in northen europe. It's the english version the swedish game Svea Rike 3. It's quite easy to learn and not really that challenging. The music is great. The main issue I have with the game is that it's unavailable in swedish. Since I played svea rike alot when I was younger I wanted to have it in a familiar language. But it's still a great game!

This game is remarkably easy as long as you are willing to constantly move through your territories and click to train units or uprgrade buildings continuously. Replayability is low, I found, all nations are the same and the strategy didn't seem very deep to me--constantly train and upgrade, attack weak enemies, pay to ally strong enemies, etc.

Europa Universalis: Crown of the North review

By Warlordnipple posted 11th November 2009

This is like Europe Universalis for Kids. Not very hard or complex, and the computer can get a little ridiculous with its upgrades.

The Idea of the game is to get enough point by a certain date, there are 6 playable nations and about 18 total nations in the game. The map is focused in Scandinavia with some parts of northern Germany and western Russia. this has a lot less replayability than any other Paradox title. Essentially all the countries you can play as are the same they just have different start locations which gives them greater or less difficulty. Not really worth the money unless you have all other Europa Universalis type games.

I bought this game on chance as I have positive experiences of the developer och 1 Euro is as close to a free game as it gets, and I must say that the game was a positive suprise.

The style of the game should be familiar for anyone that has played any of the Europa Universalis-games and if you haven't, well this game might be a good way to start.

The depth of strategy is no where near the EU games but considering the price, the strategic elements are far more advanced than I had expected.

If you are new to this family of games however, you really MUST read the manual. The game lacks any sort of in-game explaination and it was not until I read the manual that i got the full hang of the gui and of what went on in the game.

All-in-all the game offered a lot more than the pricetag would lead you to believe. Recommended.

For the price this game is very good, though you do get what you pay for. This game is rather simple, and once you get the hang of it will become quite easy. However, it still has some interesting content you wouldn't expect. Juggling keeping the church, nobles, and people happy along with some interesting events, it certainly is worth more then the price. If you want a game to kill time for a day or two, and don't want to play a game like bejeweled then this game will fill that hole.

downloaded Crown of the north, and it was not bad! Its like sundays fun when none know what too do and can keep you intrested for a day or two. That combined with the low price makes this game an pretty good game. not for someone who wants "The Great Game" but good for the strategy gamer with some extra time to kill

By Demorde posted 21st July 2009

Crown of the North is in my opinion one of two alternative 'tutorial' games for the first Europa Univeralis game, the other being Two Thrones. If you take out the complex nature of EU you recieve this game.

That however is not a bad thing - it is a casual interpretation of the main game. It allows for easier access and a quicker game. However if you're looking for depth you'll find this game lacking in comparison.

Overall though, for the price and what it provides - if you're not already a big player of the more complex games, this is a great way to get adjusted into these types og games.

Europa Universalis: Crown of the North review

By Necromaster posted 19th July 2009

This game is like an oversimplified version of Paradox flagship EU. Its a great joy to get play and would seriously serve a major tutorial if you want to seriously invest in the rest of their EU type games.

I felt that the manual was lacklustre; for one ridiculous dollar, that, I guess is the value you'd just have to expect. In addition, I give this game a 4 star also because of the incredible artwork and life-sized graphics. You can see the fields really "blowing" in the wind and the "terra incognito" is actually replaced by beautiful artwork. By the way, it seems this game is as easily moddable as the rest in the series.

Europa Universalis: Crown of the North review

By Greythorne posted 17th July 2009

After reading the consistently glowing reviews of Europa Universalis, I saw Crown of the North as a low-risk way to try out the series. I had my doubts about enjoying this game - I used to be a hardcore strategy gamer, but now I have quite a demanding day job, that uses up my brain energy. Maybe I could have fun with EU lite?

Unfortunately, not really. On easy settings, this game remains challenging to the serious strategy gamer (at least if you haven't played it much). Crown of the North is a sad reminder to me that I just don't have the time and energy for in-depth strategy games any more.

If you're looking for something that can challenge your intellect and encourage you to spend hours working through a campaign, then this is probably a good game. I was looking for something light that I could pick up and play, while feeling successful from the beginning. This is not the game I was looking for.

Europa Universalis: Crown of the North review

By zenaccountant posted 16th September 2007

This is very similar to the Europa Universalis series, but with significantly less complexity. It's very easy to pick up and play. The geography and time span are both limited, which is a double-edged sword: less variety, but it's easier to keep track of things and it's less frustrating. I wish I would've found this first before playing Victoria or EU I or II, as it's a better introduction to these types of massive games.

For the incredible price, I'd recommend this game!
