The fate of humanity is in your hands...

Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land is a turn-based strategy/role-playing game based on the award winning Call of Cthulhu RPG. Developed in conjunction with Chaosium and based their multi-award winning Call of Cthulhu RPG. Set in the midst of World War One, the game pits your team of investigators and soldiers against an ancient enemy, one older than humanity itself... Can your team of investigators keep their grip on sanity long enough to stop these diabolical plans?

The game features:

  • Full 3D graphics with high quality textures, images and effects to bring the action alive.
  • Select from a range of authentic period weapons, equipment, armour, skills and more. - Build your team up to match your gaming style; will you shred your foes with massed rifle fire or blast them with powerful spells gleaned from forbidden tomes? It's your choice!

Call of Cthulhu was originally the title of a novella by cult American horror writer H.P. Lovecraft (1890–1937) which has, since it was published in 1928, captured the imagination of generation after generation of fans. Returning to the horror from Lovecraft's original 'Reanimator' set during the dark days of WW1, Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land draws the player into a nightmare world where the terror of mustard gas and trench warfare are but a foretaste of what is to follow.

Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land review

By seanthomas posted 30th April

I'm a bit of an HP Lovecraft freak and I had the RPG when I was a kid but never had much opportunity to play it my friends who did play preferring D&D games. My inability to resist anything Lovecraftian Along with an itch to play some version of the game meant I was itching to play this when I found it even though i'm more of a console gamer. I'm enjoying it very much and even the 1st level is quite challenging, I've only got 3 levels in but it's great fun with plenty of insanity. A totally wrecked computer (unrelated to the madness of the game) has mean't I've had to start again twice to get back to where I was but now my technology is sorted I'm hitting it big style. I also have this game on app for my 7 inch Galaxy tab but it is a little fiddley to use on a small screen so It's much more suited to laptop. I can't speak for more experienced computer gamers (not being one) but I think anyone who's a fan of Cthulhu and RPGs should just love this.

Fun turn-based strategy in a Cthulhu setting

By misterlovejoy posted 15th March

A fun turn-based strategy mildly reminiscent of Fallout 1 & 2 but in the Lovecraftian Cthulhu setting. I really like the Sanity level feature and the variety of guns and items; its a fun play overall. I dont like WW2 (or war games in general) and this game surpassed that by holding my interest. I had to start over unfortunately while I was in the middle because I'd realized that I'd chosen some wrong specialties and its very important to create tanks here when leveling up.

Definitely worth the price

Call of Cthulhu: the Wasted Land is the PC port of an iOS game and that shows in the way it controls. But please don't let that get in the way of what is otherwise a great game with an amazing atmosphere and a very true-to-heart homage to HP Lovecraft's universe.

If you're a fan of turn-based tactical squad games, you really can't go wrong with this one. It is a little on the short side, but make no mistake, it's definitely worth the price!

Amazing game, very atmospheric. For all fans of the game Gorky 17 she will be just right. It seems that the game is painstakingly and lovingly. Tactical RPG fans and lovers of the old school games you need to have her always. And of course all those familiar with the works of Howard Phillips Lovecraft and his universe. And make no mistake in thinking that buying a game for mobile phones, it is not, it will take you a lot of fun.

very good game, i love tactical games with turn based system, and of course cthulhu too!

we need more (great) games about lovecraft universe, and less about elves and dwarves.

A Great Game for a Great Price

By Licurg posted 23rd August 2012

This is one of the few indies I like. Despite having a few issues such as the User Interface taking a little while to adjust to, mediocre but otherwise functional graphics, and no voice-acting(although I would choose no voice-acting over bad voice-acting any day) this is really a worthwhile game. The gameplay is simple to learn but not without complexities, while the action-points system is well balanced and with few bugs. Depending on your skill, you're looking at somewhere around 3-6 hours of gameplay.

The game gives a very good Lovecraftian atmosphere, one of the best I've ever encountered in a game( although it is not completely accurate), and is a nice little treat for us fans of H.P. Lovecraft. All in all, an excellent game and for the price, you're getting an awesome deal.

Hello folks,

Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land (CoC:TWL) is a turnbased tactic rpg. You have to command a group of english doughboys, special agents,a professor for mythology and a psychiatristess on the battlesfields of world war 1. An evil cult tries to unleash the terrors of cthulhu on earth. You have to stop them.

The grafics are okay. The game has 10 levels, you can play through it in 3 to 4 hours.

You have several classes, several stats that determine the performance of your characters. So strenght is for melee hit and damage, dexterity for ranged damage and action points, health is for Hitpoints, Psyche is for Mental stability and spellpower.

There are several weapon types: pistols, melee weapons, rifles, light machineguns, artillery strike pigeon and attack spells.

Each time your charactes face a horror of chtulhu or use a spell they loose a little mental stability. When their mental stability drops zero your character goes maniac or apathic. Maniac means he gets a huge boost on his stats for a little while, but then drops down. Apathic means he is paralysed. You can recover mental stabilty with the help of the psychiatress. Fallen characters can be resurrect with medikits a short time frame after their demise. The more constitution your characters have, the more time you have to get them back on foot. If you fail to resurrect them, they are gone forever.

The story is very linear, there are no choices or consequences and no romances. Sigh no romancing ancient demons.

The fights were not so hard for me, but i played one or two trpgs in my gamer's life and consider me not a beginner in tactic games. So i think CoC:TWL is of normal difficulty for the average gamer. To the end of the game the fights get harder, i had to retry a level or two. So the difficulty is okay.

The roleplaying part is well thought out and interesting. You have to think about how to level your characters or you will have a hard time in the final battles. So the stat system is okay.

For the price of 4,99 CoC:TWL is a lovely game. For a person interested in tactical roleplaying games it is definetely a must have. My rating is 5 out of 5.

Have a nice day

I was really hype up for this game, with me being a big fan of Lovecraft's work and RPG/Strategy genre. While it did capture the Lovecraftian feel surprisingly well(Consider it's originally an tablet game) the gameplay has some serious flaws. The first and biggest problem is the fact the whole game isn't very strategic. The maps are very small which lead to that you can't deviate from the way the designer want you to play. Ad that, with enemies who can spawn anywhere on the map(even right besides you) and can move on the same turn as they spawn. This make the game very reliant on foreknowledge in order to finish the levels and in my point of view, takes away almost all sense of strategy.

The other flaws consist most of technical ones, such as lack of music/sound and a clunky interface.

If you are a very forgiving person and crave some Lovecraftian gaming, I guess you could find some enjoyment from the game and it's not very expensive so it wont burn a huge hole in your wallet.

I really wanted to love Call of Cthulu, but this is not a good game... It is slow and frustrating.

Great stratagy game in the lines of XCom and Jagged alliance, but with H.P. Lovecraftian horror, you can't get any better then that. For the price grafics are decent, its an upgraded port of the Android version. But when it comes to this genre its hard to find good games, this is one of the few.

A turn based shooter, balancing sanity loss from attacking and missing the evil creatures vs letting them get close and pulling you apart is interesting, the game is very linear and if you rush ahead you set more monsters off which leads you to move round in a big blob trip a set of monsters off then kill them then move on then repeat

if you like turn-based Games this is definitly a buy!

This game could be a Jewel like Jagged Alliance 2 or Fallout but it is a bit unfinished (no Musik (add it yourself) ...) but there are a lot of good Ideas wich make up the flaws so is still is a quite interessting game!

Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land manages to get a lot of things right, like the story, style, and basic gameplay mechanics, though the game's high amount of difficulty will probably turn off some players. Now that Red Wasp Design has released an update, this is arguably one of the best turn-based strategy titles on the App Store. Fans of horror and turn-based strategy alike, consider this one a must buy

I love turn-based games (when done well, of course), and thus I had to try Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land – what a name! Its humble origins are evident, it is indeed a very simple game with a modest entertainment value, which is reflected on its base price. That said, there are interesting dynamics and some original ideas (like the ‘artillery signaling’ pigeons), and the setting is OK as well. I’d recommend it for the price of admission, but don’t expect a Fallout or Jagged Alliance (the original, not the horrible remake Back in Action) kind of game.
