Celestial Mechanica review
I was really excited to start Celestial Mechanica. Unfortunatly I didn't really enjoy my time with it. The art and music are execellent, and I greatly appreciate the fact dying causes you to respawn on the current screen. However, the platforming leaves something to be desired as does the level design. I also had some issues with the actual mechanics in that the controls could have been tighter and I had issues with the double jump not working correctly.
Sweet little game but rather short
Celestial Mechanica is a well executed and challenging retro style platformer with a very nice atmospheric soundtrack.
The goal of the game is to visit different shrines to get abilities (double jump, hover, etc) in order to ultimately get back into the floating city of Mechanica.
Music and visuals create a sweet little world to explore. The story is told in the form of text based dialogs with another robot also on his way back to Mechanica.
Initially not too hard, the difficulty ramps up until some quite skilled maneuvers are required to get some of the more tricky jumps right. Fortunately, death instantly restarts the player on the beginning of the current screen to allow a smooth gameplay even in the more challenging parts. The final (and only) boss wraps up the game nicely in this regard and should take a number of tries to overcome.
On the downside, the game is rather short (a few hours) and has little more to offer than some of the more sophisticated free flash games on the web. With only two enemy types (not counting the boss and some traps), the game is rather sparse with content. Therefore getting the game on sale is recommended.
All in all it's a fun little distraction between other things to do but not worth the full price.
Celestial Mechanica review
The game has simple but very nice looking graphics reminicent of the 16-bit days. The music is nice aswell but the gameplay isnt up to the same standard.
Its a platformer. but it lacks the fun factor of the big gams in the genre. This mainly is due to one thing... Tardy camera. Instead of being constantly centered on the player it lags behind abit making jumps between platforms harder than they need to be. This is especially annoying when a missed jump can kill you.
There is no limit to how many times you can die, you always respawn at the spot where you entered the area. But the respawn isnt instant like in super meatboy, the camera scrolls from the place of your death to your player. You can actually die again while this is happening believe it or not because youve already respawned even if you aint in the cameras field of view.
The story is also so bad its bad, dialog is the same. But who plays a platformer for its story.
